I think you are more likely to see shorter length contracts at lower salaries, at least in the lower mod-major conferences. Even before the onset of the virus the cost of the contract was going to be south of $150,00 a year, probably more in the 100-125 range.

Good point. I didn't look at her record. Ms. Aston is not on the way down. I disliked the concept of HC paying anywhere close to $800,000 per year to anyone. If HC has a transformational coach in a major revenue sport and he or she wants to grow with the program and it's revenues at Holy Cross, like the case with Gonzaga MBB, I can see stretching to keep that person. But if a new WBB coach is hired, I see the logic in going with an up and coming coach who has built a winning program at a lower level. If we want a veteran winning coach, why not stick with AM? I guess UT hire is "critical" Vic Schaefer Miss State coach to UT

A coach who is an employee at will and has a 95-60 w/l record has more job security and recruiting credibility than a coach with a 60-95 record and four years left on his contract, imo. Although there aren't many real world examples to judge by. But a coach who has a 60-60 record and four years left on his/her contract has FAR FAR more recruiting credibility than a coach with a 60-60 record and is in the final year of a contract. The latter would have very little recruiting credibility (unless the most recent year was a very good one).

The 60-60 coach in his/her final year could say to the recruit: "You will either have me or someone better."

Whatever it might do for next year they should clean house. If not, the questions of the past will continue to haunt the program
Some on the board like/dislike BG, but my bet is all who were after him included some from the current staff.
Replace them, without a thought, and let’s move forward.

The 60-60 coach in his/her final year could say to the recruit: "You will either have me or someone better. Sign here." 🙂
What was the status of Ralph Willard's contract when he left for Louisville, did they have to pay HC a hefty sum to buy out his contract? That would have made up for some of SK's contract.
Three little words that I like in Sports management are "incentive laden contract."

Will give up a year to right the ship in a heart beat
Believe in loyalty and frown on opportunist She could have supported BG or spoke out against him-matters not to me but it was her choice, To me her silence suggests she had something to gain-the HC role To say nothing means she took advantage of the situation In the words of Shark Tank, for that reason I am out

The 60-60 coach in his/her final year could say to the recruit: "You will either have me or someone better." That wouldn't be at all persuasive for most recruits. That was tongue in cheek, I agree no coach would actually say that. However it amounts to reality. If a college decides to try a new coach they have determined the new coach is better than the current one, so the recruit will either have the coach who recruited him or someone deemed better by the college the recruit has chosen. A new coach coming in should have the skill to play whatever style basketball maximizes the strengths of the roster he inherits, protecting the recruit if he has talent and works hard. A 60-60 coach in swimming, tennis or golf at HC deserves an extension and a statue. To me, a 60-60 BB coach at Holy Cross deserves the opportunity to complete his/her contract, but generally has not earned an extension unless the goal of HC in BB is mediocrity. (If BN gets to 60-60 he will have earned an extension due to the unusual 3-29 start). When Pridgen, Lowder and Wade were recruited there could not have been a huge amount of visibility about Carm's long term future at HC, but they all committed and all chose to stay when Carm retired and all became Freshman starters. Lowder did leave but that wasn't due to BN being in the last year of his contract without an extension in place. To me you offer a good coach an opportunity to take the reins of a D-1 program at a quality school, but you structure things so that if he doesn't succeed after a fair chance you don't leave money on the table. And you recruit intelligent student athletes who understand they will either play for the current coach or someone better, unless the current coach blows the doors off the Hart Center and gets hired away by a P-6 school. But who could complain about that after the post-Willard drought we've lived through?

After the fact of course
However I could also say while this was evaluated internally she had a voice If she used it, one might argue the results speak for themselves If she disagreed with the decision she should have departed at the conclusion of the season
Legal teams hold the answers, I know nothing other than the optics
To me, and perhaps to me alone, the optics are blurred and don’t reflect well on her
While I thought the team more than underperformed on both ends and wasn’t well coached it honestly has nothing to do with my call for the staff to be removed The program needs a fresh start and this is the perfect time

The whole situation is fascinating. If HC replaces AM with a bright young go getter, why couldn't AM play the same age discrimination card BG played? She had a better record than he did before being let go.
Both coaches would have technically completed their contracts, been paid in full, and HC is under no obligation to give either a new contract. But that doesn't seem to matter.

AM could not play the age discrimination card because of her ‘interim’ status - she did not have to accept that but she did

Roll the dice and let the lawyers settle one or both cases
This is the AD’s program and he needs to have a stamp on the quality of the coaches and teams. If he sticks with AM he will be graded on her performance. The in conference record this year was far from what many expected and not in W-L record but quality of play

OK, AM was never the head coach so she has no damages when/if HC hires a new head coach to replace BG. Makes sense.

Again I don’t know the facts, just the optics and like you have an opinion
In the end it won’t be our call but I am certain, whatever the outcome, it will lead to enjoyable conversations in the months ahead
Hope you and your loved ones stay healthy

Ah, on the way down? she averaged 23 wins a season @ UT. She appears to been not extended due to her lack of success against Baylor Texas hired one of the five best coaches in the women's game - Vic Schaefer of Mississippi State - to replace Aston. He reportedly had a long-term contract worth $1.5 Million a year and then turned down a new 5-year deal worth $2M a year to stay at MS State, so Texas presumably will be paying more than that. TX is also is paying a $1.25 Million buyout. Given it took less than two days for him to be announced as the Texas head coach, I assume they had a deal in principle before they decided to non-renew Aston.

Has there been any discussion about the other head coach position at Holy Cross that is open in baseball?

If a school has a plan in place (a hand picked candidate who has agreed to become the next coach) before launching a national search, would that make the search a fraud? HC announced a search. I'm counting on that being a sincere and honest initiative to find the best coach available and there was no hand picked candidate (plan) in place before the search.

I do think they could have waited a couple weeks to see how this all played out before opening up the job. If they rehire AM at this point, it doesn't make anybody look very good.

"national search' is often used to cover an AD's selection that in reality was a fait accompli. Not sure if that applies here. Is it possible that ADMB had his selection in mind and had discussions with the new coach before he fired BG and used AM's "interim" status because the selected new coach couldn't move to HC for this season for some reason?
