The dean can move this if he wants, as this is a total thread hijack, but I'm going to take a stab at the top 8 (Ray Borque was #10). A deeper Mt Rushmore than was the craze for various cities a few years ago
Brady Orr Russell Bird Havlicek Williams Ortiz Marciano
--------------------------- Eddie Shore is too old to get any love

They'll probably go with just athletes fro the big 4 sports, but agree Marciano should be in the mix Tom. Perhaps Hagler too.

Could there be some surprises like 2-sport star Harry Agganis? Probably not.
John Hannah should definitely be on the list but, as he was a lineman, he will not get the recognition he deserves. Isn't he one of the top 5 or 10 offensive linemen in NFL history?
I'll bet Orr will be #1 if not him, then Bill Russell.

Russell and Brady will be #'s 1 and 2 in some order. Orr #3, The Splendid Splinter and Bird #'s 4/5.

I recall seeing some video on the internet that showed his highlights. While I understand that highlights choose only a player's best, his highlight were positively frightening. As a pulling guard on some running plays he destroyed defenders

Others to consider: Babe Ruth would certainly be #1 if the judges felt he had enough years in Boston; Tris Speaker and Lefty Grove—same thinking; Gronk;

Sorry - zero shot Gronkowski is in top 10 Boston athletes all-time. If it was some other city perhaps, but not Bos.

Others to consider: Babe Ruth would certainly be #1 if the judges felt he had enough years in Boston; Tris Speaker and Lefty Grove—same thinking; Gronk; Ruth was an iconic Yankee. Bring an icon trumps short memories. Ruth is not an iconic Red Sox player other than reputation over flow from his Yankee years. Too old for a non-icon to make this kind of list. Ruth was a very good pitcher for the Red Sox, maybe even worth discussing, but I don't think makes the cut. Might be showing my own short memory bias. Speaker's ratio of years in Boston vs Cleveland is not that different than Carlton Fisk's years in Boston vs Chicago and everyone embraces Pudge. As awesome as Speaker was, he is not an icon and is too far removed from today to make this kind of list. If a Pittsburgh paper is doing the same thing, I bet Honus Wagner doesn't make the list. See my above comment about Eddie Shore. In my opinion Speaker ranks above Ruth for Boston athletes and should be discussed for this kind of list. Gronk was on the very short list of best tight ends ever. And he's recent, As awesome as he was, I don't bump anyone from my final 8 for Gronk

Huge Yaz fan. Not sure who I would bump off my list for Yaz. Maybe Ortiz based on the fact that Yaz was a multiple gold glover and Ortiz was a DH. Both hugely clutch. Possibly a solid #11, I might have put him at tied for #10 with Borque

I have a problem with "the greatest hitter that ever lived" being behind the guy who "stole the ball." Other than that, I think you did great.

Not a Boston guy, but Cooz should be higher Bourque ? I guess it is a hockey town If Cooz was in NYC and had the same career, he would be right behind Ruth and ahead of Lawrence Taylor, Mantle and DiMaggio

Actually for organizing my thoughts, those guys are organized by sport played with all the Celtics coming before all the Red Sox

Putting Cooz behind Hondo is wrong Back in 1992, Sports Illustrated put out a dream team as an answer to the Olympic Dream team. Cooz was not on it 1st 5: Russell Bird Baylor Jordan Johnson 2nd 5: Chamberlain Erving Pettit Robertson West Bench Warmers: Abdul-Jabbar Havlicek

Move Mantle up for sure. You forgot a guy named Gehrig--pretty good first baseman. Might Bossy or Messier be appropriate? . Jackie Robinson can make a good case for inclusion.--because of his ability to play any position he'd be the utility player on my all-time team. Whitey Ford--certainly helped by the great teammates but his W-L record and ERA are fantastic plus he's a local boy. I don't see Namath--great guy with one great game, with very ordinary stats and one game over .500 as a starting QB. He led the league in interceptions 4 times. How about Yogi! There's no reason the top 10 in NY shouldn't be overweighted by Yankees, most successful sports franchise in history
Not a New Yorker, but I hope it's okay to weigh in as a distant objective observer
