Dartmouth beat UNH for their first win in the series in over 40 years. They should be sky high for HC and they clearly play well on the road.
HANOVER - The Dartmouth College football team will hold onto the Granite Bowl title for the foreseeable future after defeating the University of New Hampshire, 22-21, Saturday night at Memorial Field. The Big Green (1-0) rallied back with three fourth-quarter scores to win their first game against UNH in 40 years. The Wildcats (1-2) had won the previous 13 meetings between the programs.
Quarterback Jack Heneghan gave Dartmouth its first lead of the game with 1:40 remaining. The junior led the Big Green 80 yards on seven plays and capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Charles Mack to make it 22-21 Dartmouth. Heneghan hit Thompson for a 37-yard pass down to the UNH 5 yard-line to set up the game-winningscore. The Big Green cut UNH's lead to 21-16 with five minutes remaining. Heneghan connected with Emory Thompson for a 4-yard touchdown to make it a five-point game.
Dartmouth junior kicker David Smith, a St. Paul's School of Concord graduate, made the first field goal of his career from 28 yards out with 13:45 remaining to cut UNH's lead to 21-10. Adam Riese relieved starter Trevor Knight at quarterback in the fourth quarter until the Wildcats' final drive, which ended with a turnover on downs on their own 42 with 27 seconds remaining. Knight found Justin Malone-Woods in the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown with 7:14 remaining in the third quarter to give UNH a 21-7 advantage. The Wildcats led 14-7 at halftime despite mustering just two trips into Dartmouth territory in the opening half.
Knight put UNH ahead 14-7 with 17 seconds remaining in the first half. The Nashua native hit Kieran Presley on a skinny post to the right for a 27-yard touchdown pass. The score capped a 10 play, 86-yard drive that lasted 1 minute, 43 seconds. The drive was set up by Casey DeAndrade, who punched the ball out of the hands of Dartmouth running back Ryder Stone after the latter ran 64 yards to the UNH 25 yard-line.
The Wildcats tied the game at 7-7 with 3:08 remaining in the first half. Jared Kuehl, a sophomore linebacker from Plymouth, intercepted Heneghan and ran 61 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown.
The Big Green opened the game's scoring with 3:47 left in the opening quarter when Heneghan connected with Houston Brown on a play-action pass to the left side of the end zone. The drive began at the UNH 25 after the Big Green recovered a fumble by DeAndrade on a punt return. - See more at: www.unionleader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20160918/SPORTS22/160919391#sthash.uvsaIZmJ.dpuf
