Major props to Geoff Wade for yesterday's performance. He made some throws that were truly outstanding but even more impressive was his poise and game management. No turnovers.
Yesterday was a gut check and our men responded. Next week is another gut check. The confidence that came out of yesterday's game is meaningful.
Let's Win!!

Your comment is probably accurate but was not intended as criticism of Walker who I have no doubt is doing his best and probably a fine young man. The criticism was intended as criticism of calling plays that are inherently designed to fail. When you have to make 2-3 yards, running up the middle with an undersized back over and over is wrong strategy, IMHO. Sometimes you need a runner who when the OL and DL neutralize one another, can move the pack. Agree.

Wade's performance--all things considered--was amazing. Came in under tremendous pressure. He did everything. Threw long, medium and short. Ran. Lateralled. No interception. Took sacks. He deserved the game ball.

Could we use Nikolaisen more in the backfield--not just in goal line situations--or would his presence there telegraph what we were planning to do? He can get the extra yard after first contact and I have to think he's a pretty good blocker --

That thread could have been on CROSSPORTS a week ago. The Leopards fell a bit short of the 3 TD margin of victory that some on that board predicted. Howe ver, they also showed god sportsmanship by not running top their margin of victory (as some on their board had wanted).

Here is the Lafayette story from their website:
EASTON, Pa. -- Holy Cross scored 22 straight points in the fourth quarter to recover for a five-point Leopard advantage and hand Lafayette a 38-28 setback on Homecoming Weekend at Fisher Stadium. It was the Patriot League opener for both teams. EASTON, Pa. -- Holy Cross scored 22 straight points in the fourth quarter to recover for a five-point Leopard advantage and hand Lafayette a 38-28 setback on Homecoming Weekend at Fisher Stadium. It was the Patriot League opener for both teams.
Senior quarterback Blake Searfoss played all but the first series after starting quarterback Drew Reed was knocked from the game by a vicious hit after a 10-yard run. Searfoss was ready to go, completing 32-of-45 for 280 yards and four touchdowns (all career-highs). He connected with junior Matt Mrazek for three of the touchdowns as Mrazek finished with 11 catches for 109 yards (both career highs). Mrazek's 10-catch performance was the first for a Leopard since Mark Ross did so on Sept. 7, 2013.
Holy Cross (2-3, 1-0) scored on its first three possessions of the game and led 13-0. The Crusaders who were playing without starting QB Peter Pujals, saw backup Geoff Wade take the 7-0 lead on a 39-yard pass to Jake Wieczorek. Zane Wasp added field goals of 32 and 23 yards as Holy Cross led 13-0. A 37-yard Diquan Walker run opened up the first drive of the second quarter. Holy Cross moved the ball to the two, before settling for Wasp 23-yarder.
The Lafayette (1-4, 0-1) offense earned its first first-down of the game on Searfoss' eight-yard pass to Joey Chenoweth to start the second quarter. The play was followed by a 27-yard completion to Mrazek that put the Leopards in Crusaders' territory on the 48-yard line. Lafayette settled for a 38-yard Jacob Bissell field goal attempt that missed wide left. Holy Cross returned the favor when Wasp missed a 43-yarder and gave the Leopards the ball back with 3:58 to play. Searfoss orchestrated a 77-yard drive, going 9-of-10 through the air and finishing it off with a touchdown throw to Mrazek from seven yards out to put Lafayette on the board at 13-7 heading into halftime.
Both teams opened the second half of play with unsuccessful offensive possessions before Lafayette took over on its own 25 with 11:26 to go in the third. A 24-yard rush from DeSean Brown put the Leopards within scoring range and Searfoss found Mrazek again, this time from 13 yards out to push Lafayette ahead 14-13. The Crusaders answered quickly. A 36-yard pass from Wade to Wieczorek set up a Wasp 41-yard field goal to switch the lead back to the visiting side, 16-14.
The scoring was not over in the third quarter. Searfoss used his arm, through a 17-yard completion to Tim Vangelas, and his feet on a 20-yard run, to set up Lafayette in the red zone, 1st-and-goal at the Holy Cross eight-yard line. After a pair of rushes netted five yards, Searfoss found his top option across the middle from three yards out as Mrazek reeled in his third TD of the game and gave the Leopards a 21-16 lead at the end of three.
The fourth quarter wasn't kind to the Maroon and White as Holy Cross tallied 22 unanswered points to break the game open at 38-21 with 7:34 to go. A pair of Wade touchdown passes made it 31-21 and a fumble recovery for a touchdown on strip sack of Searfoss was the final blow. Lafayette added a late score with 5:54 left in the game, on a 16-yard pass from Searfoss to Wadsworth before the clock ran out on the 38-28 final.
Defensively, Lafayette played most of the game without All-Patriot League linebacker Brandon Bryan who was injured in the first half. His replacement, Rob Hinchen, made a team-high 11 tackles while defensive tackle Robin Cepeda made eight tackles, including 2.5 for loss. When complaining about attendance at Fitton, remember that it could always be worse. Lafayette had fewer than 5,000 fans yesterday...and it was their Homecoming! On t.v. it looked to be even fewer than that! (Perhaps they need some security people to chase fans away from tailgating so they will go watch the game.)

One Lafayette poster on their board asked: "On another note why wasn't there a replay of the head on head tackle by Holy Cross? I watched the Ohio State game early in the day where a similar play occurred and they reviewed the play and ejected the defensive player."
The announcers said the tackle appeared to be accidental. In watching the game again, I would agree. However, it is baffling that here was no video replay available. This was, after all, the only game on the day between PL opponents.

I seem to remember this being posted previously, but where is the two-deep line-up posted for the current week? (With all the injuries, I need to update myself on some new names.)
Coach's postgame comments may have been the shortest I can remember...under one minute after a win and no comment from any player.

The Cameras at Lafayette were positioned on the Home side of the field, just like at Fitton. The visitor stands were empty and gave an empty feeling to the telecast. That's why I have asked Jamie Reynolds at HC to PLEASE place a camera on the Visitors side so it can shoot our sideline and our nice Home side stands. I'm SURE it will noticeably enhance our telecasts. With a camera on the Visitors side it can shoot our coaches, players, cheerleaders, band, closeups of fans, make it like the kind of camera angles we are used to seeing on big time fball telecasts. JUST DO IT. Penny wise, pound foolish. Frustrating. And please hold the excuses. You can do anything if YOU WANT TO. (If CTG is the one nixing it, just shove it down his throat. Doesn't the viewing audience count for anything?)

I find the two deep when I look at the notes for the upcoming game on GoHolyCross.com, e.g. "Football opens Patriot League play at Lafayette" would have been the story to check for yesterday's game. I agree and have pointed that our for years, however, when they showed the home stands it was not much better. I believe the number of almost 5,000 at Lafayette homecoming was (if you can believe it) inflated!

Brought the girlfriend out to Easton yesterday and had a great time. I went into yesterday thinking, "I'll take a win @ Lafayette, no matter the score, no matter the stats, no matter how sloppy." Definitely left Fisher extremely happy with Coach Rock, the overall play of the front seven on defense and the Geoff Wade coming out party. BF is the best offensive back in the league after Chase Edmonds.
Kickoff coverage was spot-on all day as well -- the unit looked very well prepared. And does anyone notice that Zane Wasp seems to be able to put his kickoffs in seemingly the same spot every time. He looks like Stephen Gostkowski out there! Huge win with Bucknell coming to Worcester next week we have a strong chance to start league play 2-0. If we win next Saturday, no excuse for there not to be a lot of butts in the seats for Harvard and Lehigh.
Any NYC area alum who don't make the annual football pilgrimage to the Lehigh Valley for either Lafayette or Lehigh each year should consider doing so. Easy drive to both campuses and I rank Lafayette and Lehigh number one and two for best PL football venues. For those that don't have cars, there are also frequent buses from Port Authority to Easton and Bethlehem.

The two deep on Saturday morning had Pujals as the starter, which means from now on I'm not paying much attention to it.
On the radio pregame, Gilmore admitted Peter was out at least 3 weeks. If he's in the next two deep I'll be even more cynical.
But, overall, kudos to the staff for coming up with some rushing plays that were very effective!

an admirable performance by the purple in a must-win situation, but we should curb our enthusiasm. plain and simple - lafayette stinks. and we don't ! they won 1 game last season and might have the same distinction this year. our schedule this year is very tough, so we have to improve in all phases to manage a winning record, imo. with the usual rash of injuries, that means we need the 'next man up' to get it done, just as Wade did yesterday at qb.
