I wonder if Jen will get forced out at the T&G along with the other veteran reporters. Is the T&G cutting staff ? Almost every paper in the country is - not just Gannett-owned fish wraps like the T&G. 90% of the daily papers in the country are sadly hanging on by a thread. For HC's sake, Jen better stay, as she essentially comprises the athletics dept. entire media pool.

It took a lot of effort on the part of the Telegram to make me cancel my subscription, but they were able to pull it off

The Courier-Journal is grotesquely biased but I have maintained my subscription to it for 25 years as it has shrunk in size, eliminated national columnists, and moved to a reliance on USA Today for most national news. Local sports coverage remains pretty good. I've thought many times about cancelling. I've been told by friends that if you do call up to cancel you'll get offered a deal to keep getting it to maintain the circulation numbers. Although the next insane political cartoon could push me over the edge I've decided to stick with it as long as the CJ keeps the LA Times crossword puzzle and Frank Stewart's great daily bridge column

When Jack dropped 56 against UConn, it was amazing. So amazing that the long-time UConn coach, Hugh Greer, died of a heart attack a week later. I always thought he figured he had seen the best shooter ever and figured it was time to go. I hope he greets Jack warmly when they meet in heaven.
Requiescat in pace, Jack.

It's time to put up a Jack "The Shot" Foley statue in front of the Hart Center. I am serious that shot would be perfect.
I know Cousy is getting one at the DCU. But nobody is more Worcester basketball than Jack Foley. Born there, played at Assumption Prep and then at Holy Cross. At Assumption Prep he averaged 41 points as a senior in High School. 920 points in 22 games!

Wow The first great hoops Crusader I watched in person in his great NITs in 1961 and 62. Jack scored 69 in the two ‘62 NIT games. The HC student section was raucous both years. Feed the Weed Requiescat in pace. Remember singing this from the student section ? All were wearing kelly green derbys for St. Patrick's Day.... Oh we are the men from Holy Cross Our team is something grand We run, drive and shoot as well as any in the land There's Foley and Foley, Gallagher Pat and Kenny McClory too O'Conner, Canavan, Kelly and Slats to name but just a few We're Irish and gay in every way An Irish laddy's dream The Holy Cross Crusaders, a helleva fighting team

As a very impressionable high school sophomore, I remember that well. I sat in the HC student section and those lyrics were handed out. I was so impressionable that I made my college decision based on those experiences. Chose HC without a visit.

Thanks, PP Is this the whole article ? it reads “relevant excerpts”. There is nothing about Jack’s HC years.

Thanks, PP Is this the whole article ? it reads “relevant excerpts”. There is nothing about Jack’s HC years. I did not include anything that was already posted on the board, or linked to; e.g., family stuff, high school coaching career.

My favorite HC player ever in any sport. First saw Jack The Shot during the 1960 NIT against St.Bonaventure. I was at the game in the old Garden when he scored 39 against NYU although the Cross fell short 84-80 in a wild comeback.. Perhaps the 'Saders can also wear his number on a uniorm patch, as well as Tommy Heinsohn's. Great idea. We all know the almost legendary glory days of Crusader basketball ain't coming back, but I think it's important to try to maintain some connectivity with what Holy Cross once was in the college game. Especially today when the program has hit rock bottom. A history to keep in mind as we hopefully start the long climb out of a very deep hole.

No rebuttal, but maybe take this off the Jack The Shot thread in deference to his memory
