I feel better about our improvement.
I’d like to keep things close with Colgate, and stealing one would be an extremely good sign.

Listening to the Army post game show, Jimmy Allen said about the Black Knights against Holy Cross today “we got our butts kicked”.
I really like the sound of that quote. 🤔🤣

Great to see Matt and Austin play so well on Senior Day. They’ve been through a lot together and I was happy they got to have this one today. Very impressive how hard the entire team played in an effort to rally around them. Hopefully they can all keep up that level of intensity the rest of the way and sneak into the playoffs.

Really happy Faw and Butler had one of their better games today.
Makes you wonder what our record would be if we had a chance at some of the PL South.

Ken Pomeroy calculated a defensive efficiency of 69.6 (the lower the number the better) for today's game, one of only 5 times we have been below 70.0 since 2010
Note: we hit that number several times per year in the Willard years

I would love to see it. He did have a good week, including today's amazing game. But, the team did lose 2 of 3 games.

Could Austin be the PL POW ? I think he definitely has a shot. It helps that no one for Colgate had two big games in their easy sweep over Boston U. One threat is Santi Aldama, who is playing right now.

Can we make the playoffs? Aren't Loyola MD and BU below us. If we end up with more wins then Lehigh?

The 17 steals are four shy of the HC single game record, which was also against Army a quarter century ago. Butler's six steals is one shy of tying the HC single game record, held by several players.

Could Austin be the PL POW ? 43 points and 22 rebounds is a pretty nice weekend, especially for a guard.

One threat is Santi Aldama, who is playing right now. Aldama won the last 2 PL POW and had 27 pts, 7 rebs (23 mins) in their 30 point win over Lehigh Saturday and today had 24 points and 18 rebs in the 4 pt loss to Lehigh. I'd say Austin has a shot.

Austin Butler, Matt Faw help Holy Cross march past Army on Senior Day Jennifer Toland Telegram & Gazette
WORCESTER — Over the last couple weeks, Holy Cross guard Austin Butler has obviously known that his senior season, and his HC career, is winding down.
But he hadn’t really thought about that too much until Sunday morning, hours before HC’s game against Army at the Hart Center.
“It hit me when I woke up,” Butler said, “and realized this is probably the last game we’ll play at home.”
But he hadn’t really thought about that too much until Sunday morning, hours before HC’s game against Army at the Hart Center.
“It hit me when I woke up,” Butler said, “and realized this is probably the last game we’ll play at home.”
Butler, HC’s heart and soul, and classmate Matt Faw were honored in a pregame Senior Day ceremony.
The past four years have not been easy for the pair, which went through a coaching change and endured the departure of several classmates and four straight losing seasons — but through it all, Butler and Faw persevered.
“I’m very grateful for their contributions the last two years,” HC coach Brett Nelson said, “their buy-in, their belief.”
Butler scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds and 6 steals, and Faw scored 14 points to lead the Crusaders to a 67-51 victory over the Black Knights.
“What they’ve meant to this program,” Nelson said. “I’m so happy for them that they could go out of the Hart Center the right way on Senior Day.”
The Crusaders (4-11) surpassed last year’s win total.
Holy Cross next plays Wednesday at Boston University. The location for next weekend’s series against Colgate has yet to be determined.
Butler posted his seventh double-double of the season and his fourth in the last five games. His six steals were a career high.
“I just wanted to make sure I went out there and gave it my all,” Butler said. “I did that.”
Faw scored 12 of his points from behind the 3-point arc.
“It means a lot (to win),” Faw said. We played hard, we do every day, and it was good to see the hard work pay off.”
The Crusaders were without leading scorer Gerrale Gates, who suffered an undisclosed injury in HC’s four-point loss at Army on Saturday.
Nelson said the junior forward is being evaluated and is “day to day.”
HC split the season series with Army (10-7, 6-6 Patriot League).
Army’s 51 points were the fewest allowed by Holy Cross this season, and the Black Knights’ 23 turnovers were the most by a HC opponent in 2021.
The Crusaders had a season-high 17 steals.
“Our focus is defense,” Butler said. “Our plan going in was to get stops and will lead to offense and make offense easier.”
Nelson considers Army, along with Colgate, one of the best transition offense teams in the league, and he was pleased with the way his team got back, got set, and made the Black Knights play against HC’s half-court defense.
“We didn’t do that in the first half (of Saturday’s game), but we did it in the second half,” Nelson said. “Today we did it for 40 minutes. That was a key going into the game.”
Army shot 38% from the field.
The Crusaders set the tone at the defensive end in the first half, and held the Black Knights to 28% shooting while coming up with 14 turnovers. Butler and freshman Judson Martindale each had three steals.
HC overcame 10 turnovers of its own to take a 30-21 halftime lead.
Faw connected on 4 of 5 attempts from 3-point territory and Butler scored nine points, including six straight to key an early 10-2 HC run.
Sophomore Ryan Wade’s 3-pointer gave the Crusaders their largest lead of the first half — 24-12 — but the Black Knights responded with consecutive 3s from senior guard Lonnie Grayson to chop the HC lead in half with four minutes left.
Holy Cross players vie for a rebound vs. Army. After a timeout, Butler sank a 3-pointer and the Crusaders maintained the nine-point lead at the break.
Army senior forward Alex King scored the first five points of the second half, but freshman R.J. Johnson, Butler and Martindale combined for the next seven.
Freshman DaJion Humphrey’s layup-and-one started HC on a 12-2 run and freshman Bo Montgomery’s 3, following a Butler steal, gave the Crusaders a 17-point lead with less than 12 minutes to go.
Later in the half, Butler scored nine straight points, including an emphatic breakaway dunk with 3:17.
“We just go out there and give it our all,” Faw said, “and Austin embodies that phrase.”
After playing through shoulder injuries the last two seasons, Butler came into this year fully healthy following offseason surgery. He’s averaging 14.6 points and 8.8 rebounds, both career highs.
“It was a great team win,” Butler said. “It was even more special that it was Senior Night for me and Faw. It’s emotional, but I’m just happy we were able to go out there and get a dub.”
