I confess I knew little about Becker. I was surprised about five years ago when my accountant told me his son was going there. Apparently they had a video gaming design major that was highly thought of. Becker seems to have carved out a niche for itself. They were trying to develop a big game design program. Worcester Aud had plans to turn into an E Sports place.

Clark University, located just over a mile away in Worcester, also announced Monday that it would absorb Becker’s game design program and associated concentrations into a newly created Becker School of Design & Technology at Clark University.

Worcester State should add some more students. Interesting to see if any athletes join the Lancers. I spoke to a Becker student-athlete today and they are heading to Woo State but they are local

If you're going to be a mechanical engineer, Tech is better. If you're going to be a shrink, Clark is better.

Clark making a big push for the gaming major students at Becker makes sense on many levels. It does not currently offer this major and it is not presently very strong in tech offerings which are growing at most colleges. Furthermore, the students in this major tend to be heavily slanted toward males. This would help Clark's effort to reduce its gender gap as its total enrollment is 60/40 female to male (the direct inverse of WPI).

WPI might be expanding in the opposite direction, but they're still the only school close enough to really consider it. Maybe MCPHS I hope whatever happens, the monument commemorating baseballs first no hitter remains intact Perfect game right?

I think the area where this marker is was also the longtime former home of the Worcester Tennis Club. It purchased land that had been part of the Agricultural Fairgrounds on Sever Street for its tennis center which it operated there from 1907 to 2014 before selling to Becker. www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=70961

My first apartment after graduating from HC was about 2 blocks away at the corner of Fruit & Cedar Street on the 3rd floor in a converted Victorian home that was typical of that area of town. Lived there for 2 years. Was surprised to learn at one point that Dr. Frank Tangherlini of the Physics department lived in one of the ground floor apartments. Didn't see him much to speak with him.
Pledge week at WPI was always interesting in that neighborhood and the members and pledges were all about trying to impress the co-eds at Becker.

If Becker is defunct, I would think it would have to re-incorporate in order to receive payments. I think the non profit corporation can stay alive even if it isn't currently providing classes. The revenue will pay on loans and obligations of Becker. Interesting, in MA. all non profits are owned by the people of Massachusetts. Many years ago, multiple independent physicians formed an HMO, "Central Mass Healthcare" to compete with the group practice the "Fallon Clinic" which was owned by the member physicians but had a contract with Fallon Community Healthcare which was a non profit HMO. When CMHC was sold to Health South, the member Doctors received nothing. The net $53 million sale price was placed in a non profit foundation to help meet health needs of Central MA residents. It still operates today dispersing $2.5 million in grants each year and has given out $44 million so far with the principal intact. So ultimately if Becker has any net assets after being wound down it will probably go to an education foundation to help Central Mass residents, maybe including scholarships to Holy Cross and the other remaining local colleges.

The building adjacent to this marker was formerly the home of Bancroft School which is now on the shores of Indian Lake. How about this info, longsuffering!

Thanks for the Spags reference. That store was one of a kind. It is where I got hubcaps for my Mustang when mine were stolen in the HC parking lot. That store had some of almost everything.

Becker buildings update:
The voters of Leicester approved the $18M purchase of the Becker campus in their town. It totals 43 acres and 19 buildings. Its intended use will be for a campus style high school.
The city of Worcester is looking into buying three Becker buildings in the city for $4.5M for educational and administrative use. It plans to turn its tennis courts into park space. The Becker Worcester campus encompassed some 26 properties it owned and 5 others it rented for use.

Interesting since Leicester High School isn't that old. I know Leicester voters recently rejected a plan to replace Memorial School which I believes houses the lower grades in town. Perhaps the current middle school is to become an elementary school and the middle school will move to the high school. It probably would have cost more than $18M to build a new elementary school.
