They said the same thing about Carvel at St Lawrence his alma mater and hometown. Money talks so we will see what UMass does with him. The NHL bug has been in him for a long time so we will see if he goes back. Good luck on your HC search. Our AD posted on twitter after the regional wins that a contract extension was in order and the following day Greg Carvel post Yes. That said sure there will be an updated contract with a good raise offered. The thing that was surprising is during the post game presser on twitter, Carvel could barely talked. Was happy and not ungrateful but said this season was a real grind day in and day out. He was totally spent and looked it. He was going to lay low for the next few weeks. Time will tell but also can see being happy here, with is wife from Amherst, could pass on the NHL, but will be his decision. Exactly my point...with the way Carvel and Leaman were laying into the Hockey East commish, this year you know there is some animosity between the PC and UMass coaching staffs with the conference office.

Going to post a few quotes from the fearthetriangle epilogue article on how we got Coach Carvel. Perhaps a few things in the article will help and realize the conference and facilities are different at Holy Cross. But he has a check list and a few can apply and will post the link. Epilogue

The M&W BB coaching searches at HC did not appear to require the same pitbull tenacity to land the coach. Maybe stoke up the intensity for this search and get a proven winner?

What evidence do you have of intensity, or lack thereof, in the two recent basketball searches? Ray, what I'm thinking of is the AD hiring a search firm to sort through resumes submitted to select finalists and then the finalists selling themselves to the AD not the AD selling himself and the school to the school's clear number one choice that the AD identified. With absolutely no inside knowledge, that is my best understanding of the HC M&W BB head coach selection process. There is every possibility it worked differently of course. And obviously the selling goes both ways to a certain extent in any hiring process.

Seriously, the UMass AD identified his number one choice to turn the hockey team into a national contender and pursued him relentlessly and now they are national champs. I think that approach, instead of a search firm might work for HC, too. That's my contribution to the discussion. HC has a strong leadership team and I have confidence they can do a great search without outside help in the smaller universe of college hockey.

I wonder if FADDR used a search firm when he hired Ralph Willard? I think that was an example of finding a proven winner (took Western Kentucky to the sweet sixteen) as well as Coach Chesney who built winning teams at two prior schools. Career assistant coaches haven't seemed to work out as well for HC recently.

HC Development Dept. is better than the FBI at keeping track of alumni.

I think that was an example of finding a proven winner (took Western Kentucky to the sweet sixteen) as well as Coach Chesney who built winning teams at two prior schools. Career assistant coaches haven't seemed to work out as well for HC recently. The story, I believe from The Last Amateurs, was that ADDR reached out to Willard when he was building a list of candidates, looking for some suggestions or references. This was before Willard was even fired at Pittsburgh (and probably before Raynor was fired at HC, for that matter). They renewed discussions after Willard became a free agent.
I don't see why a search firm is such a bad thing... although I don't think they need to be used universally, either. Keep in mind that the men's hoops opening came up even before Blossom's official start date. It was his first major hire, and getting a team behind him for the process isn't a bad thing.
The question is whether the search firm is running the search, or supporting the AD in running the search. And a lot has to do with the depth of the AD's own "rolodex". If the search firm is surfacing candidates to the AD that he perhaps wouldn't have identified on his own, or helping with the vetting process, those are useful functions.
I'm guessing ADMB's hockey rolodex isn't that deep, so he may very well use a search firm for this one.

One concept is building capabilities in the management team that supports ADMB. Many of them might aspire to be an AD one day and if they are part of the group that does the reaching out and vetting that's a stronger entry on their resume, and additional experience that HC has in house while they are here, than if they watch from the sidelines as a search firm, the finalists and the AD interact. I experienced this in the business world. Entities that had capabilities lost them because over time they continually redefined their role more narrowly - while charging the same or higher fee - then contracting out functions they used to do and passing on that fee to their customer. So that experience might influence my comments.

The rest of the Associate/Assistant AD's he inherited. goholycross.com/staff-directory/jihad-ali/323

If the HC Athletic management positions are simply too specialized for that I would be surprised.

I would have full faith in him as a member of a search committee.

Just making the point that Blossum is a "LOCAL" new AD so many of his past contacts at BC, NU, and Providence would still be in the area thus not needing a cross country move yet, he hasn't changed any roles yet in year 2.

If they really want to splurge, throw in a plane trip to Mpls; a couple drives around there too.

I would be very pleased if HC conducted a search like this. The salary is described as low, but combined with a state employee pension it doesn't sound too shabby for the cost of living in Northern Maine.

Perhaps the sentimental favorite is mulling things over or negotiating for upgrades to the program and TPTB are mulling it over.
