Never? I believe one win could change that substantially. Patriot League has won NCAA Tournament games before.... And we've had teams strong enough to earn byes straight to the Round of 16 multiple times. Not to mention at least twice each of the last 2 decades we've had multiple bids -- granted its a little easier to do that now with the expanded field.

WORCESTER — The Holy Cross football team has risen to and overcome challenges all spring.
Now, it’s time for the next one. The Crusaders, who defeated Bucknell, 33-10, Saturday to capture their second straight Patriot League championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, will play at No. 1 seed South Dakota State in a first-round game at 3 p.m. Saturday. “We’re picked dead last, which gives you some motivation,” Holy Cross coach Bob Chesney said Sunday after the team met for the selection show at the Hart Center, “and you’re playing the No. 1 team. The odds clearly are what they are. “All we’ve had to deal with at this point is challenge after challenge,” said Chesney, whose team endured two postponements and three cancellations this season and, heading into the championship at Bucknell, went three weeks between games, “so why not put ourselves in a position where we are facing the ultimate challenge at the end of this week.”
Holy Cross (3-0) is one of 10 automatic qualifiers in this year’s 16-team field. The Crusaders, wearing masks and their Patriot League champion hats, spread out in the Hart Center bleachers and cheered when their matchup against South Dakota State came up first during the bracket reveal.
The Jackrabbits (5-1) received the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s automatic bid after defeating North Dakota State, 27-17, Saturday to earn a share of the league title. SDSU will be making its ninth consecutive FCS playoff appearance and 10th overall. The Jackrabbits advanced to the semifinals in 2017 and 2018. “We just have to show up and show people why we are here,” said Holy Cross junior cornerback John Smith, whose fourth-quarter interception was one of the top plays of Saturday’s game. “We’re here for a reason. We didn’t get here by chance. We’re excited to prove ourselves.”
Holy Cross will be playing in the postseason for the fifth time in school history and in the NCAA playoffs for the fourth time. This marks the first time HC is making back-to-back playoff appearances. The Crusaders fell to Monmouth, 44-27, in the first round of the 2019 playoffs. We intend to elevate this program to a high level,” Chesney said. “We’re going to get a chance to see the pinnacle of that level in the No. 1 team. We’re going to be able to find out a lot about ourselves, what our strengths are and what our weaknesses are and what does it look like against the No. 1 team. That’s the goal here. We all came here trying to be the best and I think this is something that will give us the opportunity to feel that and understand it, and hopefully continue to compete at the level we do each and every week. “There is no question about our guys’ toughness and resolve, and how hard they’ll fight.” The highly motivated Crusaders dominated the first quarter against Bucknell and jumped to a 17-0 lead. “Our energy at practice, our energy in everything we do is always at a high level,” freshman quarterback Matthew Sluka said, “and coming into the game, we knew we were going to bring the energy. We knew what we had to do, and I think we executed pretty well.” Sluka, who helped HC to a comeback win over Fordham on March 27, made his first career start against the Bison and completed 8 of 11 passes for 78 yards, a touchdown to freshman Byron Shipman, and an interception. Sluka carried 18 times for 61 yards and two TDs.
The Bison made it a one-score game (17-10) when Ethan Torres kicked a 28-yard field goal with nine minutes left in the third. Just 58 seconds later, the Crusaders responded with a decisive 37-yard touchdown run by junior Peter Oliver of Auburn. It was a great way for Oliver, the former St. John’s High star, to celebrate his 21st birthday. “It all worked out really well,” Oliver said. “It was awesome blocking. Shout-out O-line. They were going off (Saturday).” Smith, who also had an important interception in the 34-24 win over Fordham, had his hands on two other would-be picks against the Bison. With Bucknell driving early in the fourth, Smith ripped the ball out of the Bison receiver’s hands at the HC 22-yard line and returned it 58 yards to set up a Derek Ng field goal.
Smith, who also had four tackles, including one for loss, was named the championship game MVP. “I was 1 for 3 on interceptions,” Smith said, “but it felt really good to get that last one. I was glad to bring excitement to our team. It was a good feeling.” —Contact Jennifer Toland at jennifer.toland@telegram.com. Follow her on Twitter @jentandg. Reading some scouting reports about our opponent as well as watching some game highlights. They are a big, physical team. I expect them to pound the rock against us. Quite frankly, with such an undersized secondary I am surprised more teams didn’t employ a similar game plan with 2 TE sets or just a jumbo package and make us adjust. When you use a 5 DB package as our base defense and have a SS that is only 180lbs. I think this is what you should expect. IMO if we want to play with the big boys in the FCS, we need to get bigger in the back end of our defense.

The NCAA tournament selection officials have NO respect for the Patriot League. And this year with their champ playing only three games, at the league's own doing, I don't blame them. This will never change. Never? I believe one win could change that substantially.

And the one thing we all learned from Covid is nothing in life is guaranteed. On paper Vegas will have us as a 27-32 point dog. While we might be at a talent disadvantage, imho we are dececeptively quick with the front 6. I think this will be an interesting contest, help us understand where we are as a program, assist us with recruiting, and drive us forward in building a sustainable winner. So looking at what happened against Monmouth has little meaning for what will happen on Saturday. We could lose by 40, 10 or have a special result. This Saturday is a way to build our future and every player will give that special attention this week

"Vinatieri's great-great-grandfather, Felix Vinatieri, a musician and composer, served as George Armstrong Custer's bandmaster during the Civil War general's Indian campaign. And Vinatieri's great-great-grandmother, Anna, became a close friend of Custer's wife, Libbie. In the spring of 1876, when Custer led the Seventh Cavalry out of Fort Abraham Lincoln in North Dakota to its eventual doom along the banks of the Little Bighorn in the famous battle against Crazy Horse and his Sioux warriors, most of the band -- and its leader -- stayed behind. Had Felix Vinatieri not remained at Fort Lincoln, 'There probably wouldn't be anybody, no Vinatieris, no Adam,' said Adam's father, Paul."

46 rushes for 305 yards for the Rabbits against NDSU. 14 pass attempts. Well, at least we know what they like to do. Stopping it may be another matter but I trust in Scott James.

The SDSU defensive plan will be: if Matthew Sluka is going to beat us he's going to have to do it passing.

The SDSU defensive plan will be: if Matthew Sluka is going to beat us he's going to have to do it passing. Agree To me the key will be the offensive line and the quickness SdSU has on the other side of the ball. I think Sluka will make some plays with his feet, but.....will it be enough for him to do the same with his arm. A great opportunity for him to learn and continue to grow, -perhaps before our eyes I do have questions about our defense and the ability to contain or slow them down given the space we frequently give to receivers, and some mismatchs with our linebackers, but that is why we play the game But given all the uncertainties of Covid I am just glad we have a chance to play another game and with some luck ✝️🏈🏈✝️✝️

A video that both Coach James and Roper should show the team to prepare each unit for Saturday.
Warning, for the faint, do not view beyond the first 30 seconds, as the preparation could be disturbing if you live in Brookings.

The 66-21 JMU-Monmouth score actually makes the game seem closer than it was, if you can believe that. Monmouth scored the first two times it touched the ball -- 75 yd TD run first play from scrimmage by the Guierrero kid and then a KOR TD after JMU answered with a TD. I think JMU got points on every offensive possession of the game.

That board just got a new member HC87 HAHA I am considering it. Biggest deterrent is the COVID protocol. We could easily fly out there Friday only to find out game is cancelled over a positive test. And as 92 pointed out, apparently flights arent as cheap as you'd expect during these times. Will make my decision by time tix go on sale to the general public.

HC87 on the SDSU board: Let me educate you guys on the Duffnahh yeeaahhhhsss. In 87, we beat AAAHMMYY and the game was basically ovah by halftime. And we coulda been in the Big East. It is what it is. Patriot League is the appropriate place for HC in football but basketball is a disastah.
