247sports.com/LongFormArticle/10-best-transfers-in-college-football-history-Joe-Burrow-Baker-Mayfield-Justin-Fields-165854362/#165854362_1HONORABLE MENTION: BUDDY BURRIS, TULSA TO OKLAHOMA; GEORGE CONNOR, HOLY CROSS TO NOTRE DAME These ones are honorable mention because they represent a different kind of transfer. Both Burris and Connor started their careers at different schools, then served in World War II. And as was a fairly common trend back then, when they came back, Burris and Connor did so at different schools. Connor was a second-team All-American at Holy Cross and returned to college to win two national titles and make two more All-America teams at Notre Dame, including a win of the Outland Trophy in 1946. Burris was a huge part of the post-war building of Oklahoma, returning after achieving staff sergeant status in the Army. He made an All-America teams under Jim Tatum, then two more under Bud Wilkinson.

Roger Staubach wasn't a traditional transfer either. He was sent to New Mexico Military Institute for a year to get his grades up so that Navy could accept him. Navy used NMMI for lots of players in that era.

Bill Swiacki from HC to Columbia. He caught the winning TD pass in the famous upset of Army by the Columbia Lions at Baker Field. Maybe his transfer does not rank with the others cited but his catch was one for the ages.

A Columbia alum [now deceased] on that team told me that Swiacki, from central MA, was one of the best players on that team.

Don't know if it matters and it probably does not, but Russell Wilson (listed at #9) was a graduate transfer.
I had forgotten Troy Aikman was first (and starting!) at Oklahoma before UCLA.
I'd put Gill Fenerty somewhere on a list (along with Randy Moss and Joe Flacco) of I-A to 1-AA transfers .

Maybe his transfer does not rank with the others cited but his catch was one for the ages. Very well known play in Columbia history. He was one of those great players, like HC's George Connor, who left for the war and returned to excel at another school and then succeed in the pros. Funny enough, he didn't catch the winning TD v Army (but apparently a lot of folks think he did: gocolumbialions.com/honors/hall-of-fame/bill-swiacki/13 )

Couple big ones missing:
Cam Newton: Florida to Auburn
Colt Brennan: Colorado to Hawaii
We may soon be talking about Tua's little brother (Alabama to Maryland)

We had a QB about 10 years ago (forget his name, he was a frosh when I was a SR) transfer to Towson. He started at QB and won a CAA Championship (but lost to Lehigh in the playoffs). He was gone by the time Towson came to Worcester to manhandle us in 2013, when they also made it to Frisco.

How about Doug Cosbie, who started his college career at HC in the mid-70s before transferring to Santa Clara, was drafted in the third round by Dallas, and went on to have a fine (3x Pro Bowler) NFL career?
Probably not on anyone’s list of TOP transfers, but notable on this forum nonetheless.

Swiacki was a first team All-American in 1947.
Talk about glory days, suppose Swiacki and Connor had stayed at Holy Cross, matriculating in the same time period as Cousy et al.

Interestingly, the decisive play in a 40-38 Lehigh win was when Towson tried a late naked bootleg deep in their own end and Enders got tackled for a safety.

I remember when St. Mary's had a team (I-AA non-scholly) as well as Pacific (I-A Big West Conference)

His COLLEGE career wasn't really notable but Steven Haushkca was a grad transfer to NC STATE from Middlebury College. He introduces himself on SNF and MNF as being from Middlebury (and crashed the college website when intro'd for Super Bowl). He won a ring and appeared in two Super Bowls with Seattle. Current Bills kicker I believe.

Several references to the SNL "Bass O Matic" skits made during games by Ian Eagle.

Left because some promises were not kept.

So he was a Doherty recruit? Interesting. Doherty didn't bring in all that much talent and that's one that his staff clearly hit on; but got away.

One of the real classics has to be the aptly named Joe Don Looney who. unfortunately, did not make the most of his great talent:
From Wikipedia:
"In his first semester at the University of Texas, Looney received four Fs and one D. Looney responded by dropping out and enrolling at Texas Christian University. He was eventually kicked out of that school and transferred to Cameron Junior College, where he played for Leroy Montgomery. He set a punting record in the 1961 Junior Rose Bowl, as his team won the junior college national championship. He made All-American with the University of Oklahoma in 1962, leading them to the Big Eight Conference championship. He played in only three games in 1963. Head coach Bud Wilkinson kicked him off the team after Looney netted four yards in six carries in a game against Texas.[1] Looney did not get along with Wilkinson, and it was also alleged he had punched assistant coach Johnny Tatum, though Tatum debunked that claim.[1]

Another interesting transferee is Ben Watson who played one year for Duke before transferring to Georgia. He went on to have a long NFL career as a tight end. If you've ever heard him on TV he will impress you as an extremely intelligent guy--then you hear that he was one of the top handful of Wunderlich scorers in combine history.

Ben Watson indeed had a long career. He played on the 2004 Patriots championship team with Vince Wilfork and Tom Brady. When Vince left the Pats after the 2014 season there were no more Patriots who had played with Brady on the first three super bowl teams. I was sure there never would be again and then in 2019 Ben Watson rejoins the Pats.

For that list WAY TO MUCH recency bias! Are you telling me some of those current QBS are better than their "honorable mention" Open up a book please!
