HC didn't play Army again until 74-75, the final game (yay!) at the Auditorium. It was the coach's final game (Doughterty, or something like that; he replaced Knight). Coach K took over the next year. Dan Dougherty is correct. Come on down. I remember being appalled when West Point came out and played strictly passive zone defense. That was of course, corrected the next year.

Can anyone remember the name of a MA (Worcester County?) kid with a Polish name who was a great guard for AWP and who was recruited by HC? Bobby Knight's first win as AWP coach: WPI. Was it Wally Waldakowski perhaps?

Was it Wally Waldakowski perhaps? Who ? I had a few minutes to kill so I got on Sports-Reference and looked at old Army seasons for names that appeared to be Polish. Apparently I struck out, but I can tell you that Walter Wojdakowski (I misread his name at first) was a guard for Army in the early 1970's who went on the earn multiple medals in his military service, becoming commanding general at Ft Benning and retiring in 2008 as a Major General.

Great research, KY, but that is not the guy; if, in fact, the guy I remember actually exists.

Was it Wally Waldakowski perhaps? I'll assume that the person you are referencing was Joseph Kosciusko who was born in Worcester, attended St. Mary's H.S. in Worcester. He was a standout basketball player who started out at West Point in July 1960 as a member of the class of 1964, had some doubts and left West Point in September of 1960. He enrolled at Holy Cross and played basketball during the 1960-61 season. He then left Holy Cross and went back to West Point in July 1961 as a member of the class of 1965. (all this according to the article below). He passed in April 2010. I remember him as being an outstanding athlete back in the late 50's and early 60's! www.west-point.org/users/usma1965/25705/Another article detailing his basketball talents: catholicfreepress.org/news/st-marys-schools-add-hall-of-famers

Thanks, 45 Koz started with Silliman for two seasons under outstanding coach Tates Locke, who was succeeded by Knight.

Interestingly, when we beat Army in 1986, they had just won a week earlier at Tennessee. I recall that one year in the 1970's (maybe ill get ambitious and hunt down the proof) we beat Army who beat somebody who upset somebody else and on and on until at the end of the chain some school beat the eventual national champion. Thus by the transitive principle Holy Cross was NCAA national champion. We also can claim a "transitive" National Championship in 1977...despite our 2-8 record: HC beat BC BC beat West Va West Va beat Maryland Terps beat Clemson Clemson beat GA GA beat Ole Miss Ole Miss beat ND Damn, we were good back then!

P.S. Tadeusz Kosciusko, Polish-Lithuanian military engineer and architect. Fought in the Revolutionary War (our side) and constructed state of the art military fortifications, including those at West Point. Promoted to Brigadier General. Related to Joe? I think we've now covered all possible angles of this thread topic.

As best as I can determine, Joseph Kosciusko's mother is still living. She is around 100 years old.
There are four bronze statues in Lafayette Park, across from the White House.: Lafayette, Rochambeau, von Steuben, and Taddeus Kosciusko. May have been a distant relation.
