I don't get it. We've recruited some good players. We have great facilities. What is our problem getting over the hump?

If I was to make a general statement which isn’t always right or fair
But here goes
Coaches have recruited what they believe are the best available athletes and players, but not the best players for the style they want to play.
That is then made worse by the coaches not adjusting and playing a game that fits the players skills.
Then to put a cherry on top there doesn’t appear to be a focus on addressing fundamentals-if players aren’t fundamentally sound ( by high school/AAU coaches or on their own) upon arrival, the basics remain unaddressed for the four year period.
Not the recipe for getting better or producing a winner

Remember when we hated watching the Carmody teams. I just looked at the 2016-17 team (best PL regular season team he coached) on Sports Reference. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/seasons/2017-advanced-school-stats.htmlHC was fourth in the nation in "Assist Percentage" and led the nation in "Steal Percentage." On the other hand, we were third from the slowest in Pace which is possessions per 40 minutes and in the bottom 20% in Offensive Rating (points per 100 possessions) and within a few of the bottom in Offensive Rebounding percentage. We were 11th in fewest points allowed. Carmody got his players ready to play in a particular way and, based upon the stats, they did it in games. Can we say the same about BN?

We have good men and students, and admittedly, I have seen zero games this season... but why are we insistent that we've recruited good players? Basketball-wise, it boils down to wins and losses. We've had few wins and many losses. Everything else could just be viewed as an excuse. If the players were that talented, then they'd be able to outplay poor coaching out of spite at least a few times.

The players are plenty good enough to have won or at least competed in a D1 game or two this year.

Not to steal a page from Ralph's comments on Jave (because HE stole the general concept from ME *), but the most important thing that seems to be missing from this team is . . . . wait for it . . . . synergy - the whole being better than the sum of the parts. Individually our players may be pretty decent basketball players (the jury is still out with me). But a team working well together can have inferior individual talent and can still beat a "better" team of individuals who play individually. There seems to be little cohesiveness and, frankly, this is where a coach in any sport, but especially basketball, can make a difference. Ralph had it, Brett not so much. * no, Ralph, I'm sure didn't steal this from me and I didn't invent it but can tell you from my management/leadership experience that I did my best to help make it happen and saw it in action multiple times in my career. It's beautiful. I learned it in the corporate environment, Ralph learned it on the court.

I don't know if Joe was being sarcastic. Against maybe... Duke? North Carolina? Purdue? Great. We were competitive (and lost). Mostly, we lose. Mostly, we AREN'T competitive. You're rooting for moral victories. At this point, I am too. But what I really want are actual victories. Not at an 18 or 25 or 33 or 40% clip. Not at even 50 or 60%. I want more.

Not the recipe for getting better or producing a winner Well, he's coached these guys the equivalent of one season; the freshmen and Louth considerably less than that , the seniors we have, sans Hart, didn't play for him until 2020-21. I'd say the league schedule this year would be critical in that regard. If they're not doing the right fundamental thing most of the time, it probably is never going to happen consistently. No one's saying "two more years after this one". ('cept maybe one guy or two) Right now, if you have an extremely thin margin of error, which this team has; what I call "losing plays" add up and they kill you. One such play was either right before or right at the beginning of Fairfield's run. Johnson (maybe Luc, but I think it was Johnson) drove to the hoop on the right side, threw up a shot that was so hideous and so "un reboundable" it was almost the same as an outlet pass. The guy from Fairfield grabbed it and in one motion threw the ball down the court for an easy two. Basically, a horrible decision became a four point play. Another one in the game before, a CC guy chased a tipped pass from his frontcourt halfway into the backcourt. Our guy chased him, had no shot of getting the ball; instead of setting himself and applying some pressure, he dove at the ball and fouled the guy.

The players are plenty good enough to have won or at least competed in a D1 game or two this year. What did Parcells say...you are who your record says you are or something to that effect. Is it any surprise our record is what it is: 1.Our coach had no head coach experience. Great players are rarely great coaches. 2.His style seems to be of an AAU coach. Keep waving your hand forward and play will be faster and better. 3.Fundamentals are awful: boxing out, help defense, pick and rolls, offense sets are terrible. Every team can's shoot 60% against you. 4.His in game adjustments seem to be non existent. We can't score. 5.Recruiting is questionable at best. Which players can compete with the other teams' best. How after 3 years can we not have a serviceable center? Guards are the easiest to recruit. How can we not have any that can shoot? 6.Player improvement is marginal at best. Gates and Johnson seem to have regressed although injured. Let's see what happens the next 20 games. In summary I am beyond disgusted. The last 10 years has been embarrassing. At the end of the next two years ( March 2024), we will have 6 to 8 roster spots to fill (maybe more), I think a big review is needed at the end of this season. 5 to 8 wins again is not going to cut it. If the Chesney hire could turn around football, a basketball hire could do the same thing. Find a coach that has won before. Not Kearney( 0 wins), not Brown (46% lifetime), not Carmody (worn out) and not Nelson (0 wins). The BOT should make a large commitment to turn this problem around. They should be embarrassed with their hires by now. A good basketball team is our athletic standard. Ok, so much for my rant. Having gone to HC basketball games since 1958, the present team situation is totally frustrating. Merry Christmas to all ! KOT 72

What did Parcells say...you are who your record says you are or something to that effect. A good basketball team is our athletic standard. Dick Regan said that, must have been post-Kearney (because he wasn't around for post-Milan). Hasn't been the case, that's for sure.

Yeah but he was talking about teams as a whole, not players. These players may not be final four caliber but a win or two shouldn’t be this hard.

Has the Luth helped our basketball recruiting? I shudder to think who we would have gotten without it. And definitely not with retention. Almost a whole squad left.

Let's leave the wins/losses out of it. I contend that accolades for individuals are nice, and again I root for them, but are not the goal. The goals are wins/losses, and many more wins than losses at that. If we throw those out the window, and see just how much talent do we recruit and develop (and keep, gulp), how many 1st team All-PL players do we have? God forbid, how many PL PoY awards do we have in the last ten years?
2020-2021 = 0 2019-2020 = 0 2018-2019 = 0 2017-2018 = 0 2016-2017 = 0 2015-2016 = 0 2014-2015 = 0 2013-2014 = 1 (Dave Dudz) 2012-2013 = 0 2011-2012 = 0 2010-2011 = 0 2009-2010 = 0 2008-2009 = 1 (Andrew Keister)
Our last PL PoY award was 2006-2007 with my favorite HC player, Keith Simmons, winning the award.

We beat two teams on our schedule each by 40+ points. The other six teams were our Daddies. One group is very unlike the other. Our only two wins are against those titans of the hardwood, Regis College and the College of Mt. St. Vincent. Say what!?! If that doesn't tell you how low we've sunk, I don't know what will. THE PRESIDENT OF THIS INSTITUTION AND ITS BOARD OF TRUSTEES NEED TO ADDRESS THE DEATH OF HC'S BASKETBALL PROGRAM AND THEY NEED TO ADRESS IT NOW!
