Good for Malcolm. He’s had quite a journey. Went the JUCO route which enabled him to move to a first class academic school for his bachelor’s degree and I’m guessing now that he may have a chance to get a year of grad school funded

Very saddened to see this--I think he has a lot of talent and it is too bad we could not find a way to capitalize on his talents and improve his skills where he had shortcomings

I feel especially bad for all the assistant coaches who spend weeks, months, even years to recruit these players, and then the players leave after one or two years.

It’s officially time to give Nelson his walking papers. Quickly.

The group that I'm most interested in and would be disappointed about losing is RJJ, Luc, Bo, Kenny, Gates, Louth Dorsey should continue to develop into a nice piece and defensive stopper (at minimum) Add Batchelder to the mix. Go put the new scholarship availability to good use this spring, as Nelson & staff have done the past few years (Gates, Louth, RJJ, Bo, Townsel). Do all of this and we should be cooking with gas next year. I thought Bubba had potential, but there was clearly something off between him and Nelson based on his minutes.

It’s officially time to give Nelson his walking papers. Quickly. Because two guys who likely would not (should not) be a factor going forward are transferring out at a time when everyone and their brother is transfering? Let's not overreact here. (But I am looking forward to the mental gymnastics from some who have been saying the roster isn't talented enough and will now complain about losing future all-Americans)

The transfers are just icing on the cake.

Neither rain, nor snow, nor transfers... 3-4 per year per team. I surprised some teams still stitch player names on the back of unis. It is the way of the college hoop world.

5 UNH guys in the portal, 5 Northeastern guys (no, Joe Pridgen's not one of them). A couple of the UNH kids are probably grads; grads seem to be listed as Juniors, e.g. Townsel. Don't know how many freshmen JMU brought in, but 4 are leaving. And that team had a winning record after a coaching change.
Part of me says the defectors (not Townsel, for obvious reasons) show the coaching is poor and please make a change. Part of me says "don't let the door hit you in the ass walking out".

I spoke too soon recently when I said there was no sign of any HC player in the portal. What we don't know is if this has been coordinated with the coaches (not necessarily approved by the coaches) so they will be at least able to discuss returning if they don't get good offers.
The whole thing is sad because if our two sophs leave we will get a couple of guys who weren't happy elsewhere or a couple of HS players who don't have good offers.
In answer to the question if the portal entrants are due to the coaches, almost by definition yes. A current college basketball program basically is the coaches. Scholarships are full everywhere and NCAA regs are uniform across D-1.
If Coach encouraged these two to look around I think he's short sighted. Players like these make an impact in the PL as juniors and seniors and give you veteran players at the end of close games, of which there are many.

This season, I was high on him initially--I was at the CCSU game when he played very well. There was a horrible stretch during the second half of the season but then he played well the last couple of games. I began to look at him like I look at my golf game. Something always brings you back. I will be interested in seeing what school is a better fit for him. Look around for a big in the portal or from a JUCO with Martindale's scholarship. If you can't find one that can contribute right away, hold onto it.

These guys both get the free Covid year, maybe they figure they'll be leaving anyway and don't want to wait until the focus will be more on actual results and less on moldable potential.

Does anyone recall the quality and quantity of offers JM had coming out of WA?
