They waited until the student tree huggers were away for the summer. I hope HC actually plants replacement trees instead of just buying carbon credits. Yes there are replacement trees, but not the green wall of trees that separated the houses on City View from the old field house. The green wall that remains delineates the backyard of the one house on the south side of City View that HC does not own (yet). Arborists have learned to mix up the tree species for a healthier 'forest.

Rougeau said the students were surveyed as to their housing preferences, and the response was that they want to live communally; i.e., suites. Figge, the newest dorm, has four-person suites, consisting of two bedrooms, each with two beds; a kitchen; a lounge area with a dining table; a WC; a shower (non communal sized); and wash basins in an open area between the WC and shower rooms. The two new residence halls under construction follow this communal model, though some suites will have eight beds. This hints that the reconstruction of the four Easy St. dorms and Brooks will turn these into the communal model as well. It appears that freshmen would still be housed in 'traditional' dorms.

Live action of the tree removal can be seen now on the Jo Webcam. No trees at all now. A large open lot that surprised me!

Yes. That's where the large tent was for the various outdoor meals (Pizza Truck as example) was for the Reunion. While I didn't notice if they took up the grass (thought there was grass beneath me), it's possible the grass died as a result of the foot traffic.

There was a large tent set up in the Hogan lawn (I presume -- but not sure -- for the reunion events), and it appeared that there was some type of flooring underneath. When the flooring was removed, the result was the rectangle that you observed. I'm assuming the grass will be replaced.

I just checked my reunion pictures and, indeed, there was some kind of flooring under the tent. My powers of observation apparently are receding as quickly as my memory.

The Hogan webcam shows a large rectangle of non grass. Does anyone know what is going on ? The College had a building permit for the tent. Permit was to expire at end of June, so the tent was removed. I think this tent was an exception as there were deferred reunions being concurrently celebrated, and the class of 2020's commencement re-enactment (held in the Hart). Next year, the Prior will have a large multi-function room available. (I came across the permit looking for other stuff.) An earlier version of the tent appeared in fall of 2020, because of COVID limits on dining spaces.)

The construction zone runs from the hedge in the foreground on the right side of the street all the way to College St., goo.gl/maps/FLj4BBgeDRQD5Ssh7The Hogan cam shows this forked tree near the HC logo. This tree (and the three decker) and all the properties that can be seen on the south side of the street are owned by HC. The one house not owned by HC is across from the Jesuit residence, and is too distant to be seen in this image. goo.gl/maps/WTfncRkgQ7WZ9qJu8]

Does anyone have a picture of the Jo and the trees on City View before the clearing for the new dorms? I realized I missed during a screen shot before the deforestation took place.

The building permit, which is for the building only, has a value of $15 million. This permit does not cover electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and natural gas utility work, for which there are separate permits, with separate value estimates.
These above permits do not cover architectural and related fees, landscaping, demolition, site preparation, furnishings, etc.
So my guess would be a total cost of $25-30 million, or upwards of $170,000 a bed. ============ They started pouring concrete today, either for the foundation base, or for trenches for utility lines, i.e., water and sewer.

They have zoomed The Jo cam, so the view is maybe 40-50 feet closer.
The white house with the tree near the center of the view is on College St., and not owned by Holy Cross. The three-decker to its left, and next to the fir tree, is on City View and owned by HC. The white house just beyond the left roof edge of The Jo, is owned by HC. The gray house, opposite the Wheeler gate on the right side of The Jo, is owned by an absentee landlord who lives in Alabama.

In three days during the current heat wave, enough Greenland glacier ice melted to cover the entire State of West Virginia in a foot of water. I assume HC will still go with fossil fuels to heat, cool and light these two new dorms.

How are they going to collect all that water and transport it to West Virginia?

I assume they'd have the requisite number of solar panels to keep the costs down. Some place on the top of the hill might be a hell of a place for a wind turbine, too. Save a few icebergs with those moves, I guess.

How are they going to collect all that water and transport it to West Virginia? They're going to get ahead of the problem and tow the iceberg to West Virginia and let it melt there. Of course, they'll have to avoid the Garden State Parkway (no commercial vehicles or icebergs).

How are they going to collect all that water and transport it to West Virginia? The melt will never get to West Virginia. It will flood the NYC subway system during the next hurricane first. I'm just surprised HC isn't working on some kind of Rube Goldberg type plan to harness the sun and wind on the hill, at least to please the students who don't seem to care.

Good point. Nearby Holy Name HS doesn't have too many close neighbors and plenty of open space for their big turbine.
