From the Syracuse website:
Holy Cross-Syracuse Preview One of these days, the Syracuse Orange is going to need sophomore forward Tyler Lydon to have a big game. And it might be Tuesday, when the No. 19 Orange host the defending Patriot League champion Holy Cross Crusaders at 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome. Lydon, who averaged 10.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game as a freshman, was recently named to the 2017 Naismith Trophy Men's 50 College Player of the Year Preseason Watch List. The 6-foot-9 Lydon scored just two points on 1-for-6 shooting with six rebounds in 26 minutes in Syracuse's season-opening 83-55 romp over Patriot League-member Colgate Friday night at the Dome. And counting Syracuse's two exhibition games, Lydon is 0-for-11 on 3-pointers this season. "I wasn't really trying to force anything. My shot hasn't been falling for me so I'll keep working through it," Lydon said. "The first three games, even though the first two were exhibition games, I haven't made 3-pointers so clearly it's a slump but you just have to keep shooting the ball and it will come."

Another article on the Syracuse win over Colgate:
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim wasn't happy about much Friday night even though his Orange thoroughly dominated Colgate 83-55 in the season opener for both teams. "The press was so bad I wanted to keep trying it to see if it got any better," said Boeheim, now in his 41st year. "If that's the extent we can do with the press you won't see it much." And there was more disappointment. "We didn't do a very good job on the boards. With our size advantage we have to do a better job," he added, noting his team's slim 46-40 advantage.
Something did bring a smile to the face of the hard-to-please Boeheim - the play of guards Frank Howard and John Gillon. Tyler Roberson scored 18 points, fifth-year transfers Andrew White and Gillon had 17 and 13 points apiece as No. 19 Syracuse overpowered Colgate. Howard, a sophomore, added 11 points and a career-high nine assists for Syracuse, which shot 55 percent from the field. The Orange scored 44 points inside the paint, and had 23 fast break points, thoroughly dominating the Red Raiders at both ends of the court. "Our guards played really well, exceptionally well," Boeheim said. "Frank and Johnny played well." The two combined for 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting and 15 assists.
Howard shot 2-of-19 from beyond the arc in his freshman season and drew the ire of his coach whenever he hoisted a long-range shot. Friday, Howard was 3-of-3 on 3-pointers. Now, Boeheim is totally fine with Howard launching treys. "He's worked hard. His shot's a lot better. He's stronger, more physical," Boeheim said. "I'm good (with Howard shooting)." Howard was pleased with Boeheim's new-found confidence. "It feels real good. I made a few changes to my shot," Howard said. "I was shooting with my palm last year but now I'm getting a higher release and my form's a lot better." Howard, though, still gets the most satisfaction from making creative passes, which are appreciated by his teammates. "The guards did a great job of getting me the ball," Roberson said. "It gives me a lot of energy. Frank really gets the ball to me in great position and finding me in open spots." Malcolm Regisford led Colgate with 10 points. Sean O'Brien had nine.
BIG PICTURE Colgate: Coach Matt Langel's squad was overmatched by the bigger, more athletic Orange so he really couldn't get a good handle on how his team will fare against Patriot League rivals. Needless to say he was extremely impressed by the Orange. "They need to grow throughout the season but they have a lot of talent one through nine." Syracuse: Boeheim has tons of versatility and impressive talent inside and out. Boeheim, who's often criticized for not playing a deep rotation, has a luxury he's sure to employ throughout the season.
POLL IMPLICATIONS: Syracuse certainly didn't hurt itself with its dominating win. At this point of the season, the Orange will have to depend on the teams in front of them to lose in an upset or two.
STAT OF THE NIGHT: Roberson was 9-for-13 from the field - all layups or dunks.
TIP-INS: Colgate: The Red Raiders schedule features contests against 10 teams that made postseason tournaments a year ago. Syracuse: Colgate is Syracuse's most familiar opponent. Friday's game marked the 169th time the two upstate New York schools have squared off. The series dates back to 1901-1902. Syracuse has now won 51 straight going back to 1962.
ROLE PLAYER: Gillon gives the Orange a dimension the team lacked last year - blazing speed.
LETDOWN: Orange freshman Tyus Battle led the team with a 16.5 points-per-game average in the team's two tune-up games but against Colgate the standout from New Jersey could only manage six points on 1-of-7 shooting.
SOPHOMORE SLUMP: Tyler Lydon, arguably Syracuse's best player, was 0-8 from 3-point range in the team's two exhibition games. His slump continued Friday as he was just 1-6 from the field, including 0-3 from beyond the arc.

I assume the team flew straight to Syracuse from South Carolina either last night or this morning?

Batten the hatches! They will zone us with all that height. Ouch.

Batten the hatches! They will zone us with all that height. Ouch. When only 1 of your first 9 is 6'0" and the next "smallest" player is 6'5" then we better shoot well from outside the arc.

The atmosphere for this game will be a tough one for us. Syracuse crowds are large and raucous, kind of the opposite of what our guys are used to. I hope it's close, and I'm happy we are scheduling a few of these games. Go cross!

...and don't forget about this sweet Syracuse defeat at the Centrum in 1992 either.
'cuse was absolutely roughed up by UMass and one of my lasting impressions was Mike Hopkins walking past me at the end of the game on the way the locker room holding an icepack on his head. 'cuse took a mid-80's Big East-style physical pounding that they weren't prepared for. This was the start of UMass' great run.

that reminds me of the league tourney in march and the itinerary between the loyola and bucknell games. part of the amazing story. but this time, there has been time to plan. we don't fly charter, and doubt there are any 10pm flights from columbia to boston. here's my guess: overnight hotel after the game. fly monday to syracuse. fox bus dead-heads it over the syracuse yday and brings the team back to worcester imme after the game. back on campus by 2 am.

Batten the hatches! They will zone us with all that height. Ouch. This game really scares me. They are so long and athletic with a center with a 7'8" wingspan. Gonna be tough for our guards to get off shots and many of our backdoor drives might not reach the rim. Hoping for the best but not optimistic.

If HC stays close and can keep the final spread under 20, I would think that has to be a good result.

If HC stays close and can keep the final spread under 20, I would think that has to be a good result. We need to get back to the point -- like where we were under Willard -- where there was pretty much no opponent we couldn't hang with. Still have a long ways to go, and it's not happening this season. I remember during the 2006-07 season where we nearly beat Syracuse, and most of us weren't all that surprised it was a tight game.

Always value your opinion - where the team currently stands, what are the areas of improvement you think that needs to be improved over the next couple of years to get to that level?

Not worried about the offense at all. As offensively challenged players go, there are fewer and fewer on this year's team than we saw last season, so I think that bodes well. The PG position really worries me, and I don't see how this team can survive if AT and PB are on the court together for an extended period of time. More than anything though, the defense must improve. Is Joe Scott a defensive-minded guy? I hope so, because Carmody is not.

Yes, at least we gave a few teams a scare. I think we are still a few years away from that. We have got to play meaner on defense. Teach everyone to crash the boards. That is what made RW teams tough. Teams were scared to play us because we would kick the crap out of them. Can't say this team does that in the least!

Perhaps, as a tip of the hat to RW, we just need some guys who can "steal hubcaps." I thought Green was such a player, but it would be nice to have a few more.
