SOV please explain how we can expect to see improvement next year with a roster of Charles, Zignorski, Floyd, Benzan, Cohen , Lesann, Stevens and 5 frosh. Of that group Charles is a good but not top level talent, Benzan will be a serviceable player but limited by inability to score anything other than lay ups, Zignorski appears to be a miss by the present staff, and Floyd is athletic with little raw basketball skills. The most alarming part of the season to date has been the lack of any impact by the current freshmen class. In this day and age where freshmen are playing at all levels of college ball it is inconceivable that not one of the three frosh can get on the floor. Let's be honest it's not like these guys have to crack a stacked roster to get playing time. I'm very concerned that this group is a wash out and if that's the case Carmody has struck out on four of five recruits. In order for next years team to be even competitive the five freshmen will have to hit the floor running and be able to contribute significantly immediately. It's interesting that Andrew Kostecka is starting as a freshman for Loyola and is averaging 8 points a game. How exactly did we lose him did Carmody not want him or fail to re-recruit him? I do agree with your assessment that this team is not very talented and by mid season we will see that the five game run at the end of last season was a miracle. I was at today's game and it was very poorly played by both teams. UMASS didn't show up and despite trying to give the game away came out with a win. Needless to say I am very pessimistic about this years team and about the program in general going forward. As a follower of the program since the 60's I hope Carmody and company prove me wrong.

The only thing Carmody has right now in his offense is two guards that don't turn the ball over but are on the short side. He needs a big man that can hit 18 foot jump shots and threes before you see his offense in true Princeton style play. Those types of players don't show up overnight.

HC just played three of the toughest 5 opponents it will face this year. With the score tied 50-50, UMass went on an 11 point run, where HC responded with a few good looks that rimmed out. A couple of those fall, a few FTs made, and the troops here would be celebrating. Instead, the frosh suck, the team is the worst group since the Raynor years, and we'll be lucky to win 10 games! This team could very well start 1-6, even 0-7, and still compete for the PL crown. Save two, it's the same team that went on a magical run eight short months ago when Carmody was a genius. AT is playing well, his threes are falling; Benzan has been a pleasant surprise; KC still a bit rusty after his injury, but played ok yesterday; we know RC & MA are players; both Floyd and Husek are more than adequate as a PL 5s. We get blown out at Albany and Sacred Heart, and I'll start worrying. Should have stolen a W yesterday, but remember, the DCU is not HCs home court! The team will be fine.

No minutes for the frosh? Troubling. I think it was Coach Willard who use to say "If Freshman are playing, we are in trouble" Not to nitpik, but I think the quote was more if you HAVE to play freshman. . .

Agree this was not a "home court" like Yankee Stadium was ( yuk yuk) as I would estimate the 3,591 in attendance was probably about 55%-45% Purple-UMass crowd. Pre-season, I did expect, hope more like it, that this would be a Holy Cross win. Having the proverbial "front row seats," we probably could and should have won this game. KC is no where near where he was last year. The entire team looks rusty or fatigued. Both conditions concern me. As this is the start of the season, though a brutal schedule both in terms of opponents and travel, I would hope they are not fatigued. As for rusty, a little more understandable but many of those that got their act together at the end of last season and most are back, so you would think they would have a leg up on most teams they play early in the year. Here's a positive, though outrebounded by 10, 38-28, we actually had 6 offensive boards to only 2 for UMass. That has to be unusual for us. But to win, we need more scoring punch from both MA and RC. Both were totally off. MA was 3 for 8 from beyond the arc but my recollection was he made his last 2 in the closing minutes when the game was out of reach. Take those away and he was 1 for 6 and that won't win us many games. RC was 2 for 9 beyond the arc. Someone more knowledgeable about the game than I told NAD and I that to win games, RC and MA need to score at least 30 between them. Yesterday, that combo scored 22, 8 short and . . . . we lost by 8 points. Hmmm. Pat B is indeed a bright spot. He brings a lot of energy and hustle and was by far our big rebounder with 10 including half of the O boards. He filled the stat sheet. Shot 50% from the field (4 for 8); made all his FTs (4 for 4). 10 rebs; 3 offensive, 7 defensive. Only 1 assist but no turnovers and 4 steals and 12 total points. I will take that from him any night. Despite the 0-3 start, I am still optimistic for this season.

Coach said umass wore us down at end. I believe starters are playing too many minutes. We were led to believe TC was the second coming of EG. Can't he at least give us 3 minutes a half running the baseline in the 1 3 1 while hiding his offensive game?

I'm not so sure I read "writing off tc" in that post, at all. The message seems to contain valid points, even if one believes the messenger has an agenda.
The coach said it. Four starters had 36+ minutes, and five players had 34+. He was highly touted. Couldn't we have used some relief in that defensive spot?
I'm struggling to find the offensive parts here.

I firmly believe we'll see more of the frosh in a low-pressure game this Friday afternoon.
As to why none logged a minute yesterday - I also firmly believe it was because Carm felt he had a shot to win (which HC did), and wanted experience on the floor. If yesterday was a blowout, they would have got a little PT, as they did during the previous 2 games.

In the post game interview, Carmody said there significant defensive lapses in the 11 point run after 50-50, which they will work on today. Also if we're not making 3s got to make the opportunities around the hoop, they were contested but make-able next time. The UMass full court pressure was tough. At some point we realized that Malachi's defender was not going to play full court, so he brought the ball up. Great atmosphere, great game.

Can't he at least give us 3 minutes a half running the baseline in the 1 3 1 while hiding his offensive game? First of all, I think all recruit hype is just that - hype. Perhaps Cohen has some of the same attributes as Eric had, but they're not fully developed yet I am, however, also curious about the short rotation thus far, although I would have thought LeSann was the guy. He got decent minutes vs Assumption and also scrimmaged on the starters' team in the open practice. Maybe the coaching staff didn't want to shatter the kid's confidence by tossing him right in against the big boys, but based on his pre season role, I'm guessing LeSann will be the first freshman to help give the starters a little breather. Totally off topic, Dean Wermer used some black magic and determined that a certain poster used an existing IP address to sneak his way back on the board, and cut off the aliases. Unless the poster in question has gotten a lot more tech savvy, he is not posting under a new name. Just because someone shares an opinion or writing style of HC70, doesn't mean that the person is HC70

Really, does it matter if ncaam is or is not HC70?
1. HC70 is my age and, for the most part, people of that certain age are not particularly tech savvy 2. On the other hand, he is a retired FBI agent and either might be smarter than the rest of my class or as we say he "knows a guy."
He seemed pretty content to not post the last I heard from him.
Perhaps it is a tribute to him that so many are so concerned about his possible sneak return to Crossports. I suggest for those who don't want to read what ncaam says to activate the "ignore" feature. I have re-instituted it for one poster. Makes life much nicer.

Of the players you list, we know next to nothing for about eight of them (five incoming freshmen and the current freshmen), so don't you think it's a grave stretch to say there won't be any improvement? I find it funny that Charles went from being one of the best freshmen in the league last season (probably should have won PL ROY) to someone who doesn't have top level PL talent. He broke a bone in his hand recently, right? Perhaps that's contributed to his slow start. I am concerned about Ziggy, though. He got off to a real nice start for the first half of his freshman year, but has struggled since then. You are making some drastic claims, IMO, saying that he has already struck out on recruits. The two best players on the floor yesterday were Charles and Benzan -- I suspect we might begin to see PB steal minutes from AT at some point this season.

PB will not have to steal minutes from anyone. He is firmly in the now short rotation he is averaging 30 mpg vs our toughest competition. AT is averaging 34.3 it looks as if CBC likes the 2 small guards lineup, at least as of now.

An impact frosh is a real prize. Based on posting many of us thought we had one with TC. Alas, we don't even have a frosh giving us any minutes to rest the starters. And for those who criticise the Jr and Sr classes, give me next year's top 8 rotation. Maybe Coach is hiding one for the conference season. Here is the thing, 70, you are moaning three games in and starting with the lions and tigers and bears oh my crap again. Maybe you are not 70, but you post like him, and we don't need him or his like on the board again. Let's worry about next year when we are more than three games into the cirrent season and have seen how the bench is developing. If nothing else, the answer is in better shape than if CMB were at the helm. Who knows, let's hope we dance again this year....wasn't is great for the drought to end last year? Cheers.

For the class years between Jave Meade and Karl Charles, I would love to hear from posters how many true frosh at HC were impact players. Not too many come to mind. Cheers. Here are the freshmen who played the most (say 20+ minutes per game) or who otherwise had a big influence on the team in the period specified 01-02 Nate Lufkin 03-04 Keith Simmons 05-06 Alex Vanderbaan 08-09 RJ Evans 11-12 Justin Burrell 12-13 Cullen Hamilton 13-14 Malachi Alexander and Anthony Thompson 15-16 Karl Charles I would strike MA and AT, likey Cullen too. Either way, the brevity of the list is the point.
