Interestingly, I just read the Telegram article about Togo and it said that he carried a rosary. I regret I never got to meet Togo; seems like he was a great guy. I believe Coach Duffner is also a fan of the rosary.

The article lacks a bit of context - including the size and influence (if any) of groups it claims present the rosary hatefully (if that is the word I’m looking for).
So often in viewing or hearing the wokesphere the words ‘mountain’ and ‘molehill’ come to mind. Not to mention ‘baby’ and ‘bath water’. (If one is still permitted to allude to traditional sayings.)

Prayer beads have been used for centuries and in many faith traditions. In the Mexican War and American Civil War, Catholic soldiers carried small "rosaries" (1 decade that fit tightly around the knuckles of one hand and could be worked while operating a musket). They were there to provide comfort and to inspire those who used them as an expression of faith. Their smaller size also allowed them to be concealed more easily from those in the American army who persecuted Catholics.

Banks & Duncan are the prime signatories. Look them up. Their past record clearly indicates they are not credible. Obviously, if any of us use extremist sources "Fascist Right 0r "Socialist Left" the source will be uncovered, evaluated and treated accordingly. It is futile to use the fringe left's Green New Deal as it is pointless to parrot talking points of Tea Party types & election deniers. Hope this post is viewed as even handed. It is not an attempt to promote on political view over another. Moreover, it is a cry to keep slanted political sources out of the discussion. Peace.

Gregory Boyle who has been working with gang members in LA for over 30 years. His basic message is "love no matter what". He acknowledged that people do horrible things, but believes that no one is evil. This is someone who walks the walk. I found him to be very inspiring. His approach can be applied to any part of life, including politics. One takeaway from the podcast was how important it is not to demonize people. Fr. Boyle acknowledged this is hard work, but he said he tries to find a way to "cherish" everyone. There is a lack of cherishing in America today. I don't exempt myself from criticism.

Perhaps if the rosary becomes "objectionable" more people will find time to say it. Funny how life can work that way.

From the document:
"DRL’s goal is to ensure everyone enjoys religious freedom, including the freedom to dissent from religious belief and to not practice or adhere to a religion. By not adhering to a predominant religious tradition, many individuals face discrimination in employment, housing, in civil and criminal proceedings, and other areas especially in the context of intersectional identities. DRL’s objective is to combat discrimination, harassment and abuses against atheist, humanist, non-practicing and non-affiliated individuals of all religious communities by strengthening networks among these communities and providing organizational training and resources."
td, I am not sure what it is you think you have uncovered here. This statement is objectively true, and I applaud work to end this and any discrimination based on religious belief. Freedom of religion includes freedom from religion. It needs to work both ways.

There is nothing wrong with this article, and it is certainly not anti-Catholic in any sense. It is calling attention to How Extremist Gun Culture Is Trying to Co-opt the Rosary. THAT is what is anti-Catholic.

Years ago at my Uncle's 90th Party family was asked to give insights about him. One of his Granddaughters told a story about saying the Rosary. She said every time they rode in the car with him they had to say the Rosary. On some long rides for vacation it would be the whole ride. One other story was his time as a corpsman in the South Pacific during WW2. While tending to American GI's he would also tend to wounded Japanese soldiers. When questioned he answered that they also had a Mother waiting for her son to come home. He tried to make Mass everyday of his life. He was my Mothers older brother & Im proud to say my Godfather

There is nothing wrong with this article, and it is certainly not anti-Catholic in any sense. It is calling attention to How Extremist Gun Culture Is Trying to Co-opt the Rosary. THAT is what is anti-Catholic. Apparently folks with more time on their hands than I do have followed up on the author’s links and sources and found no actual evidence that ‘extremist gun culture’ (whatever that is) uses the image of the rosary, allusions to the rosary, or the rosary itself. Which, these critics note, means there is something very wrong (if you consider false and misleading to be wrong) in the article. (On a side note, The Atlantic tried to salvage the thinly-sourced article by changing the title and accompanying offensive illustration. Here’s an earlier (and widely read) version: web.archive.org/web/20220815094619/https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/08/radical-traditionalist-catholic-christian-rosary-weapon/671122/And yes, critics (Catholic and otherwise) are having a field day with the peculiar article. And rosaries are flying off the shelves.)

I don't carry my rosaries with me daily but have a couple. However, not to sound like a religious fanatic, I wear two crosses around my neck every day. Both were gifts from my beautiful wife of 48 years. I wear them for these reasons:
1. They are gifts from my wife 2. They are a manifestation of my Catholic religion 3. They represent my beloved Holy Cross alma mater
While I am sure my wife thought I would wear one or the other or alternate, I simply can't choose, so wear the both. They ain't heavy.

SOV, You may not agree with this article, but to many respected writers, The Atlantic is a credible publication, It has had many writers, and even a former editor, who consider themselves .conservative. I didn't start this topic. For what it's worth, the author of this piece, Dan Panneton, has in his (Dan's pronouns aren't listed, so I am just assuming his gender here) twitter bio: "Museums worker and online hate researcher" Smells like the Atlantic is just looking for an attention-grabbing and provocative headline to drum up conversations and debate online to generate more clicks. Bingo regarding clickbait. You’ll never guess the first title of the article when it hit the internet. (The Atlantic has set a world’s record for frantically scrubbing and re-titling this gem since): web.archive.org/web/20220814121120/https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/08/radical-traditionalist-catholic-christian-rosary-weapon/671122/Oh so clever, a takeoff on Guns and Roses. Can’t imagine why they ditched the animated bullet hole rosary imagery. That masterpiece survived several scrubbings. (And was the only evidence, albeit self-invented, of a gun-rosary linkage in the entire article).

The retititling controversy shows us what happens when respectable publications try to get clicks. As others have pointed out, there are not really inaccuracies in the article. I would point out that this appears to be a web only article. I have subscribed to the print magazine on and off over the years (off right now) and it has oustanding long form articles about a variety of topics. Those stories have a long history of being well fact checked although there was a recent blunder there. I think we talked about the incident a couple of years ago when the Atlantic gave a previously disgraced reporter a shot and she made up information about niche sports and college admissions and then interfered with the fact checking process. They were a little slow to admit to their own shortcomings in that debacle.
I don't think factchecking (or much editing at all) occurs for web only stuff. The magazine's political bent has certainly moved left over the last twenty years.

I assume this thread topic was to just generate discussion since we don't have enough things to talk about here.
And just for grins and giggles, I submit to you that it's not the rosary that people think is a hate symbol, it is the much maligned Crusader. Discuss . . . . .

What about a Crusader who is praying the rosary? I guess he is a double threat.
