Wish we wouldn’t be on these lists. Prefer to catch the Bulls napping or looking past us. I’m sure they see these and get pretty focused on our game.

With the big win last year against UCONN there is zero chance Buffalo takes this lightly. Coach Linguist is a defensive minded coach they will be ready to play. Two things we will need to be ready to do well this week is stop run and pass the ball extremely well we do that this game will be close. Hope they are throwing so new wrinkles in this week. Good news they did not show much last week so Buffalo doesn't have much to go on.

I hope watching film of HC playing in tiny Duane Stadium lulls UB players into complacency.

It's one thing for the coaches to take an opponent seriously (and I'm sure the UB coaches do)......but they have to make sure that the PLAYERS do as well. Probably easier said than done sometimes.

1964 at Buffalo (My first year writing for t he Crusader) In 1965 HC won 20-7 in Worcester. Great to see those names from '67 [Cunnion, Lentz, & Hinkle] and others in print I believe Hinkle [maybe Weaver] missed the FG's; would like to see the roster for that game many other '67s were sophs on that squad we didn't have a reliable PK on the roster; [Kaminski '68 was on the frosh squad] the '67 w/o who kicked for the freshman team had dropped football to focus on his pre-med studies. Sexton 1B & Gravel C ['66/''65?] were starters on a pretty good baseball team managed/coached by Hop

Agree about reading Mike’s name. He was such a wonderful person. I had no memory of Charlie Hinkle playing football. Did he play as a junior or senior ? I believe he has never come to a reunion.

collegefootballnews.com/2022/09/buffalo-vs-holy-cross-prediction-game-preview-lines-tvGood little synopsis here of the game as well as a prediction. Buffalo vs Holy Cross How To Watch
Date: Saturday, September 10 Game Time: 6:00 ET Venue: UB Stadium, Buffalo, NY How To Watch: ESPN+ Record: Buffalo (0-1), Holy Cross (1-0) Buffalo vs Holy Cross Game Preview Why Holy Cross Will Win
The Crusaders had to battle, but they came up with a nice 31-17 win over Merrimack to start the season. The offense was almost perfectly balanced, controlling the clock wasn’t a problem, and the No. 1 defense in the FCS last year held the Warriors to just 280 yards with two takeaways. Buffalo has to prove it can consistently move the ball. It struggled to get anything down the field in the 31-10 loss to Maryland, and running on Holy Cross isn’t going to be easy. Why Buffalo Will Win
The Bulls have enough good offensive parts to pound away a bit. Cole Snyder is a decent enough passer to keep the chains moving, the defensive front should get into the backfield better than it did against the Terps, and Holy Cross will be more efficient than explosive. Buffalo has to beat the Crusaders at their game by grinding out drives. The running game is about to be fair stronger after being held in check for 108 yards. What’s Going To Happen
Look out. Holy Cross has the exact right makeup and style to pull off the upset. Buffalo will grind its way to a win, but it’s going to need to catch a few breaks, the offense has to find something down the field, and getting behind will be a death blow. It will take a few fourth quarter field goals to pull away, and then a late touchdown will make things easier. Buffalo vs Holy Cross Prediction, Line
Buffalo 34, Holy Cross 24 Line: Buffalo -12, o/u: 51 ATS Confidence out of 5: 2.5 Buffalo vs Holy Cross Must See Rating (out of 5): 2

sader1970 slackin again.....
From Thursday's Telegram by Jen Toland....
Receivers Ayir Asante, Jalen Coker have raised Holy Cross offense to next level
Jennifer Toland
Telegram & Gazette
In Holy Cross’ opening win at Merrimack last Friday night, junior quarterback Matthew Sluka passed for 242 yards, the second-highest total of his career, and spread out his 13 completions among eight receivers.
HC coach Bob Chesney commended Sluka, a run-first QB his freshman and sophomore seasons, many times during camp and again after the 31-17 victory over Merrimack for his dedication to becoming a more complete quarterback in 2022. Having a deep, dependable and gifted group of receivers, led by senior Ayir Asante and junior Jalen Coker, has certainly aided Sluka’s evolution.
“Matt has taken his game to a new level,” Chesney said, “but so have they. You can see the confidence between both groups, where I don’t know if that was necessarily the case a year ago. They’re running complete routes and expecting the ball as opposed to sort of running routes and wondering if Matt is going to pull it down and run with it. We’ve become a very different team and we’re going to need that as we roll into this week, but the confidence of both position groups in each other now exists more than I’ve ever seen in five years here.”
The Crusaders play at the University of Buffalo at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Coker (51 catches, 691 yards, 4 touchdowns) and Asante (43-529-4) were HC’s leading receivers last season. They each had three receptions and a touchdown against Merrimack.
“We kind of didn’t pass the ball as much last season as we really wanted as a wide receiver group,” said Asante, who had a long grab of 28 yards in the opener. “Being a more experienced and older group, we can have those true and honest conversations with Coach Ches. We had to prove it to the coaches that we had confidence between the quarterbacks and the wide receivers to be able to establish that. We worked tirelessly all summer and we saw a little bit of it in the first game. We’ll strengthen it.”
The 6-foot, 174-pound Asante was HC’s leading receiver as a freshman. He is a three-time All-Patriot League selection.
After Wednesday afternoon’s practice at Kuzniewski Field, the quarterbacks and receivers stayed overtime with QB coach Dean Kennedy and WR coach Rich Gunnell.
“The confidence between us definitely comes with trust,” Coker said, “meeting after practice and working routes that we didn’t work during practice, just making that connection as strong as possible.”
In last year’s Football Championship Subdivision playoff game against Sacred Heart at Fitton Field, Coker made one of the biggest catches in Holy Cross history when he hauled in a 35-yard strike from Sluka for the winning TD with 14 seconds left.
Against Merrimack, Coker caught a long pass of 46 yards from Sluka. Junior Byron Shipman had a 34-yard reception.
Asante and Coker, as well as sophomore receiver Justin Shorter, will have added duties this season. All three will play special teams.
“I definitely love it,” said Asante, who is on kickoffs and the gunner on punts. “There was an emphasis for us this offseason as a receiver group and I think we’ve embraced it. We have a really talented group and we understand how important special teams is and we have a lot of playmakers. We all want to contribute to special teams knowing how important it is.”
Asante played a role on special teams his freshman season as a kick returner.
The Crusaders didn’t punt against Merrimack, but when they do, Coker will be out there, too.
“I love my role and I’m embracing everything,” Coker said. “I want to be well-rounded all over the field. (Being on the punt team) is a little different, but if you attack everything just like you are catching a touchdown or making a game-winning play, that just elevates your game that much more.”
Asante and Coker are good friends, and they have a psychology class, Life Span Development, together this semester.
“(Asante) has been a great mentor for me,” Coker said, “showing me the ropes of being a receiver, knowing the game inside and out, not just catching the ball.”
Following the Merrimack game, Asante won the team’s Hammer Award for most big hits.
“It’s a different feeling delivering a hit rather than taking one,” Asante said, “but it definitely felt really good just to get the season started.”
Chesney also praised Asante’s and Coker’s blocking against the Warriors.
“They’re attacking things,” Chesney said. “They want to be complete football players, not just the receiver who catches the ball when it’s thrown perfectly. There are many things in there that really standout.”
Buffalo up next for Holy Cross
Ayir Asante was a wide-eyed freshman in 2019 when Holy Cross faced and fell to Navy and Syracuse.
It was a different story last year as Asante caught a pair of passes, including one for a touchdown, and HC beat UConn for its first win over a Football Championship Subdivision opponent since 2002.
On Saturday, the Crusaders travel to the University of Buffalo, their fourth FBS foe in the last four seasons, hoping to replicate their 2021 success against the Huskies.
Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
“After beating UConn, we understand what it takes,” Asante said. “The amount of preparation and attention to detail we put in that week was immense. We know what it takes to get there. We understand the standard, we keep it really high, and we’re making sure we meet it this week.”
Buffalo, a member of the Mid-American Conference, is coming off a 31-10 opening loss to Maryland.
Buffalo has won 11 of its last 12 home openers.
This marks the 14th straight season the Bulls will host a Football Championship Subdivision program. UB is 12-1 over the stretch, with the only loss coming against Albany in 2016.
The Bulls finished 4-8 last season.
Among the 25 transfers on UB’s 2022 roster, 11 came from power five programs.
“They present a lot of challenges,” HC coach Bob Chesney said. “That offensive line is huge, the defensive line is huge. They’re an FBS team and they have a lot of transfers in there, grad school kids. It’s what you would expect. The quarterback is great, the receivers are great, the running backs are great. You’re not going to go down the list and see many positions where we say, ‘Man, we’re so much better than them.’ That doesn’t exist.
“The majority of the Buffalo team is new,” Chesney said, “and they’ve only had one week of competition together. If there is one advantage, it will be us and our style of play being gelled long ago, comparatively speaking, to theirs, but as far as matchups, there are a lot of tough ones that favor them.”
This will be the 11th meeting between the schools. Buffalo won the last game, 16-0, on Oct. 31, 1970. The school dropped the football program following the 1970 season, and reinstated it in 1977.

Important game. Don’t necessarily have to win but must play well and not get blown out. A win would really set the tone for a special season.
