Looking at my Waterford "Kinsale" decanter as I write this. Interesting factoid; St. Patrick's Cathedral is not a Catholic CHurch; it's Anglican. As is its neighbor, Christchurch

When I was recently in Ireland I encountered a number of people who spoke Irish in Donegal, and down to Dingle, but everyone easily slips into English when necessary.

Speaking Irish (and thus showing respect for the country's history and culture) can secure some good buys and great friends. If planning to travel to Ireland, some before you go.

If you have never been to the west of Ireland, anywhere from Donegal to Cork, on or near the coast, add it to you bucket list. My number one is the Dingle peninsula, particularly the west of Dingle.

There's no part of Ireland I don't like, but if asked to pick a place in Ireland where I might live I would pick Dingle. I'm thinking of learning to speak Irish. I had a few Irishmen tell me it's not too hard to learn but I don't know if I believe them.

I sometimes could barely understand my Irish grandfather (and he was speaking English)!!! Both of my grandfathers came over on the boat from Ireland as teenagers in the late 1800s. My paternal gf started an Irish Club with other recent immigrants. At their first meeting one of them stood up and suggested they get chandeliers for the club. Another one stood up and said "Yes, but who here can play them?"🙂

"Sip real Irish whiskey In the 1800s, Dublin led the world in producing the “water of life,” or uisce beatha in Irish. A recent revival has brought five new distilleries to the city, among them Roe and Co., where the flavors experience lets visitors sample different whiskeys, learn how it’s made, and try their hand at mixing cocktails. At the Irish Whiskey Museum, learn about the spirit’s history, then head over to the Whiskey Palace, located inside Palace Bar. Opened in 1823, the Fleet Street institution was a favorite of writers like Flann O’Brien. Today, it pours more than 400 whiskeys, including its own label." Famous scene in "The Wire". brutalhammer.com/protestant-whiskey/

To my surprise Ireland has also become a mecca for gin, home grown. I felt obligated to sample some when I was there in June. It's good stuff.

I heard a lot of the Irish language spoken when we visited the magical Aran Islands (Inishmore, Inishmaan and Inisheer). You can tell where the Irish accent comes from after you hear the real thing.

"The Quiet Girl" is a charming movie out on streaming services. The dialogue is in Irish with English subtitles.
