Excerpted from Telegram: “Earlier this week, receiver Ayir Asante, safety Walter Reynolds and defensive lineman Jake Reichwein entered the portal as graduate transfers. Chesney said Tuesday he hopes 12-15 players will return as fifth-year players in 2023. Linebacker Jacob Dobbs, who missed most of this season with an elbow injury, will be among them, Chesney said.” In case anyone missed the obvious points regarding our success and 5th-years this year, Jen Toland notes: “Bolstered by its 14-member fifth-year senior class, Holy Cross became the first 12-win team in program history, and made its mark on the national stage, rising as high as No. 5 in the FCS rankings.” www.telegram.com/story/sports/college/2022/12/13/this-holy-cross-football-team-made-its-mark-on-national-stage/69720191007/Looks like another large group of 5th years for HC next year so we’ll be on equal footing again (in that regard) with the competitive FCS programs.

Mr. Dobbs , a multiple year and respected-by-his-peers captain, may influence other seniors to return for a realistic shot at the national championship

Love the mention of Sluka talking to and hugging his linemen and members of the senior/5th year class. Great article capping a great season. Nice work by Jen.

Do portal entrants have until January to review their offers before deciding whether to accept one or take off second semester and return to play at HC in the fall?

Do portal entrants have until January to review their offers before deciding whether to acceptnone or take off second semester and return to play at HC in the fall? I know there is a second transfer window as well--a 15 day period in the first two weeks of May at the end of spring practice, May 1-15. To answer your question though, I do not know when the deadline is to make a decision.

I'm thinking more of an HC deadline of when the last date is to decide to withdraw for second semester.

I'm thinking portal entry for a senior almost certainly means they will graduate in May but with a small possibility they will stay for one extra semester if they get no good offers from the portal, until some date certain that is probably set by HC.

I'm thinking more of an HC deadline of when the last date is to decide to withdraw for second semester. I’ve been told by people who are tied into the program that Chesney has made it pretty clear to players that once they enter the portal, the coaching staff will offer their support but there should be no expectation that the player will be invited to return to the program. Thus, while I suppose an exception could be made, once you enter the portal, the door closes behind you. It probably has to be this way so the staff can properly manage the roster.

Ng entered the portal last year and returned to the team when he had no interesting offers so we shouldn’t be surprised if that happens again.

Kam Molton also went public on IG that he is returning in 23’. The number is at least 10 maybe 12/13 But will wait for players to go public first.

12 def realistic. 15 maybe a bit a stretch. You can cross off the following as it’s obvious (either injuries or never played) Kiessling Schnell Blessing Wiegel Jonathan Young also mentioned “end of the ride” on social media
I know of 10 coming back right now and a couple that have been asked and weighing options (current job offers etc.)

I take it this means Kiessling will not be able to play due to injury.
I know all teams have to cope with injuries to key players, but I think it is remarkable that HC had such a good year despite injuries to some key players. Dobbs, of course, but McMurtrie, Peterson, Doran, and Kiessling were also anticipated to play key roles this year.

I expect few other non grads entering the portal until after Christmas and at that point we will be at 12 or 15 coming back

Spencer Gilliam got an offer from UMass...per my UMass friend.. Spencer has been my avatar for several years now as I just liked the way he “had a nose for the football” on special teams as well as being a solid pass catcher
