With all we have seen, I still have to say that as bad as it appears right now, it can ALWAYS be worse. Agree but I never envisioned being where we are right now. Not in a million years.

Good post, 2010.
We will get 3,000+ at the Hart again when we are good. Worcester community isn’t coming out to support a losing program.
Let’s also see how Fordham performs after HC hires Dave Paulsen.

Is the jump from D3 to D1 overstated? How old is Andy? Chesapeake is a community college, where he went after D3 Salisbury (where got his BA, 1990) fired him for a minor recruiting impropriety, the equivalent of using the wrong fork for his salad in the world of NCAA violations. Seems more to have been more a matter of a personality clash with a new AD. A non-factor in his otherwise exemplary record at every level. I hope our AD can get acquainted with his CV, talk to people who knew him on and off the court when he was here, and call to say hello.
I think he's 55-years-old.
There are D3-hire success stories (Flannery and Paulsen in the PL), and some disasters (Mike Maker at Marist, Bob Walsh at Maine). Since Sachs has never had a losing record in his eleven years as a head coach - nine at D3 - I'm guessing he can recruit (which can be challenge in the jump to D1) and knows the DMV like the back of his hand. I'm also guessing he has a very particular way he wants his teams to play.
Here's an interview with him in 2015 which is of some interest (scroll down).

Hire Paulsen. Very simple and easy hire to justify. 10 year deal. Set it and forget it.

How much of Fordham's sudden success is due to Paulsen? I agree, he would be a strong candidate.

Andy Sachs sounds like a terrific person and phenomenal coach. Thankful there are people like him dedicated to giving student athletes every chance to be successful. Looks like he recently completed an advanced degree in athletic administration while balancing his coaching obligations and family. All good. With his coaching experience and new degree he has prepared himself for an AD role or AD/coach role. Does not appear that his career ambition at this point is to return to Division I low/mid major ranks — at least according to this article. degree.astate.edu/articles/sport-administration/college-basketball-head-coach-andrew-sachs.aspx But who knows — maybe he does. Would be interesting to see if he has been on any short lists for openings recently. Even if AS wanted to put AD aspirations on hold any prospective employer would want to look into the circumstances under which his tenure at his alma mater (successful from a W-L perspective) came to an abrupt end. No doubt a few perspectives likely exist on that — the new AD who implemented the decision is himself a longtime successful coach (soccer) and educator at Salisbury who is still there. Would be irresponsible from a hiring perspective to not inquire further. Presume Chesapeake vetted that issue appropriately and got comfortable for their purposes — and the situation has not impacted AS’ ability to earn W’s in the ensuing years for Chesapeake CC. . Any individual entrusted to serve as HC will have issues to evaluate. Ability to win games is the key metric of course but no institution is going to look only at that to the exclusion of other factors. If it costs a school a search firm fee to be sure it has collected and vetted any relevant info on any potential candidates as efficiently as possible — that is chump change in the scheme of things. Hire Paulsen. Very simple and easy hire to justify. 10 year deal. Set it and forget it. One thing to remember about Paulsen is that most of his recruiting success at Bucknell was due to two very good assistants. When you talk to the top bison players of that era, they always mention Dane Fischer or Aaron Kelly as the main factor in their recruitment. if they signed him to a 10 year deal - which they wouldn’t he would be almost 70 years old at the end of that contract.

All coaching candidates should be thoroughly vetted. Goes without saying.
I hope the AD can tap into resources other than a search firm to help him find the right guy. Then again, working collaboratively or exercising an undue amount of independent thought may not be chief among his core competencies.

It's kind of a false suggestion that Kit Hughes is going to start the hiring process this week. He's been in the AD role for over a year now, and no doubt from his first day on the job was aware that he would need to make a decision on Nelson, and identify his replacement.
Between the reports that we "inquired" about Pitino's availability last year, and other reports that there has been "vetting" done on some other candidates already, I think we can consider it very likely that there is a "silent" search going on already. In fact, while there's undoubtedly a group here that will scream bloody murder when we announce that we have retained a search firm for this vacancy, one of the values of using a firm like that is that they can do that sort of "silent" work in the background, in advance of the opening, without Kit's fingerprints on it.
In this age of the transfer portal, where it's going to be pretty imperative to have the job vacant for as little time as possible, pre-work like that which shortens the entire search process is valuable... as long as Kit actually retains the decision-making power himself, rather than outsourcing that to Parker as part of the process.

Per the press release at the time of KH’s hiring: “As a former student-athlete, coach and administrator, [KH] brings broad and relevant experience to his new role. His principled leadership, commitment to academic excellence and integrity, and deep experience in creating the strategic vision and structures that enable success stood out to the search committee, and make him an outstanding fit for the College.” In evaluating the HCMBB program including its coaching situation these core capabilities are surely being invoked. The college administration and board are also involved as appropriate in supervising other aspects of key operations. I suspect KH is not looking here for guidance on how to best fulfill his job. His January 26 email to the HC community specifically stated people should “always feel free to reach out to me or a member of my team if there is ever anything we can do to help.” If that pathway is not in fact open would be good to know.

Just because he coached at Bucknell? This reads like a 12 year old Red Sox fan not wanting to sign a good player just because he used to play for the Yankees.

A silent search means someone bumps into Coach Y and says a friend of a friend is wondering if you'd be interested in the job at State U if it happened to become open? Is a college allowed any leeway at all in contacting a coach under contract at another college or is that a definite no-no. I am going to guess it is the latter and the NCAA has tampering laws in place.

Per the press release at the time of another former student-athlete's hiring at HC. "_____________ distinguished himself from an impressive pool of candidates with his strategic vision, demonstrated leadership, commitment to the development of a successful athletics program that values academic excellence and integrity . . . and demonstrated experience [that] made him a perfect fit."
And this one actually played college basketball.
That we have mastered the cut-and-paste art of winning the presser doesn't overly . . . impress. After four swings and misses, let's hope we get the coach we deserve.

The consistency in the College’s understanding and articulation of its mission and the core competencies of those professionals hired to pursue is comforting. Does HC always make perfect decisions? No. Is anybody at HC content with the MBB W-L record? Doubt it and hope not. Do I trust those in a position of authority to consider all relevant factors, seek out support as needed, and work in good faith to make the best determinations for HC? Yes. Others may disagree. Either way — share the appreciation for all the student athletes committing to the team this year and next and look forward to better rewards aheads.

The new coach must be free to select assistants of his own choosing. If he is going to be held accountable he must be allowed to pick the people he feels can best get the job done. There should be no pressure from the administration to hire particular assistant coaches. Time for a total house cleaning on Mt. St. James.

Basketball Alumni……Stand Up for Andy! He's earned it. He's not what you get from central casting when you order a D-1 Head Coach but he has the long track record of success in multiple environments. Which is more important?

You can do a lot of those preliminary inquiries through agents/intermediaries.

Paulsen = Carmody 2.0
Just a really poor fit for a program that has no roster stability. He was successful coaching 4-year guys at Williams and Bucknell, and that’s the opposite of what he would be stepping into at HC.

Never like to see anyone lose their job, but the world of division 1 basketball coaching (like most professions) is driven by results and BN simply has not delivered by nearly every measure. He has been given ample time to show what he can do. I've seen enough. The poor results at the end of the season should make KH's decision much easier. Guessing the decision has been made and Nelson is aware. Guessing the paperwork is already in process in HR and the press release has been drafted. If they lose on Tuesday, they should act quickly and make the announcement Wed morning. Let's set the next coach up for success by getting them on board asap so that they have as much time as possible to re-recruit current players and work the portal to put together a competitive squad for next year. A new coach should have several scholarships available for the 24/25 season. Hope springs eternal.
