Today's game (at 1:05 at the Hart) with UMass Lowell is huge for HC. Last year UML won only 4 games - and Holy Cross was one of those four. The Cross lost to the River Hawks 75-67 in Lowell. This year UML is currently 1-8 but has a 1 game win streak after beating Fairleigh Dickinson 61-55.
Massey makes Holy Cross a 16 point favorite 69-53. This is clearly a MUST WIN for the Cross.

From the River Hawk website:
RIVER HAWKS SET TO TAKE ON HOLY CROSS ON SATURDAY
Hayner and River Hawks Knock Off Fairleigh Dickinson, 61-55
LOWELL, Mass. -- The UMass Lowell women's basketball team goes for back-to-back wins on the season and against Holy Cross, when the two teams take the court at the Hart Center tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
Last Time Out Behind 23 points in the fourth quarter, UMass Lowell picked up its first win of the season, 61-55, against Fairleigh Dickinson. Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) drained the game-winning three with 34.5 seconds left in regulation. Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) scored 14 points, and Megan Hendrick (Alexandria, Va.) added 10. Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored all 10 of her points in the fourth, shooting 4-of-5.
Leading the Flock In the midst of reaching double-digits in six consecutive games, Kayla Gibbs leads the team with 11.6 points, and is snagging a team-high 6.2 boards per game, while Tyshay Britten (Norristown, Pa.) has a team-high seven blocks. Nicole Hayner and Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) have 18 total assists to rank atop the team, and Katherine Smith has dished out 15 helpers. UMass Lowell is shooting at a 38.2 percent clip (172-450) from the field, and connecting on 41-of-145 (28.3%) from three-point range.
SCOUTING HOLY CROSS The Crusaders (1-7) are losers of their last four games, to add to their three-game skid to begin the season. Holy Cross hosted Penn State on December 7, and faced a 84-48 setback in its last time out. Infiniti Thomas-Waheed leads the squad with 14.1 points, while Lauren Manis is adding 10.8 points per game in support. Manis also controls the glass for the Crusaders, grabbing 8.3 boards, while Amy Hasenauer has recorded 13 blocks. As a unit, Holy Cross is shooting 35.3 percent (159-450) from the floor and is 40-of-144 (27.8%) from beyond the arc.
Feeding the Kat Coming off the bench in the fourth quarter, Katherine Smith went 4-of-5 shooting and scored 10 points in the final 10 minutes in the win against Fairleigh Dickinson. The River Hawks went 20-of-22 (90.9%) from the free throw line at Columbia. That was the most free throws UMass Lowell has hit in a single game since going 21-of-26 against UMBC in 2014.
H Squared for Three! The sharpshooting duo of Megan Hendrick and Nicole Hayner have combined for 30 of UMass Lowell's 41 three-pointers, shooting 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. Hendrick's five triples at Towson were the most in a single contest since Hayner hit five last season against Maine. In 2015-16 Hayner led the team with 46 three-pointers and a 39.7 percentage. She ranked third in the America East with in percentage and fourth in triples made per game with 2.0.
Do you Even Bench? Through eight games, the River Hawks' reserves have scored 181 points and have outscored the opponents' bench five times. Last season the River Hawks' bench scored 341 points, and outscored opponents 12 times.
Starting Fresh The River Hawks have used five different starting lineups through the first nine games of the season.
Spreading the Wealth The River Hawks have had three players with 10 or more point in three of their last four contests. Last season, the River Hawks had 13 games with three or more scorers in double figures. In three of the 13, UMass Lowell had four players with 10 or more points.
Sharing is Caring Through nine games, the River Hawks have recorded 104 assists to rank sixth in the conference with 11.6 per game. In the season-opener at Towson, the River Hawks dished out 20 assists, led by Katherine Smith's career-high six. Last season's team only had 20 or more helpers in one game, in the final game at UAlbany.

UML has averaged 28.4 turnovers per game this season. Opponents have averaged 16.8 turnovers. Opponents average over 15 steals per game (to 6 for the River Hawks). No River Hawk stats are impressive (in a good way). They are being outscored by an average of over 28 points a game. However, this is a team that beat HC last year, so nothing can be assumed. Perhaps this can be a start or our young team to start a turn around for his season.

At the end of one, in a little bit of ragged play HC 16-10. Byrne playing best I've seen her since before her injury last season, scored last 4 of the qtr. UML are a true turnover machine, 11 in the qtr.

Both teams off to a slow start in the second, HC 20-12, neither team shooting very well, HC making their foul for a change, so far 9-13

Lowell is awful. Doherty and Hasenauer have regressed since last season. Disturbing.

HC 51-30 at the end of 3 on a great, perhaps lucky put back by Hasenauer at the buzzer, she has 10 rebs today.

Final HC 62-47. Kids played pretty good today except for the inability to make the 3 ended up 1-15 although 4 or 5 attempts came in garbage time. Manis had a great day career high 22 points + 8 rebs Springfield also had a very solid game as she is beginning to earn more time. Still, team struggles to put the ball in the basket other than Manis

I saw Swords play for IHA in NJ. She is not yet comfortable with college play. She will be a contributor by next year (perhaps by the PL tournament). Right now she is playing stiff.

Couldn't agree more Rob, I think she will be a solid contributor by the end of league play, seems to hesitate just a little when she goes up for a shot, needs to work on those free throws!

UML takes pride in how their bench plays vs their opponents bench. Today HC bench players outscored UML 25-19. HC bench out rebounded the UML bench 21-14. Nice to see.

nice to get back in the win column for sure. UML was the right team at the right time. But at the risk of throwing some cold water on this victory (not having seen the game) the box score is troubling. against a poor team we shot 31% for the game including 1 for 15 from 3. our top three guards, doherty, smith and byrne shot a combined 1 for 16 from the field. the veteran guards are off to terrible starts on this season. manis is a terrific freshman but she can't to it alone and the outside game has to improve in a big way for this team to have a chance this season

I should add that Infiniti has had some nice games but she too has been slumping from the field. in her last 3 games she is shooting 9 of 38 (23%). she's our best athlete and arguably our best all-around player. gibbons has to get her back on track.
