We've seen great success in football over the last number of years. We've seen decent success in women's basketball. We saw a possible late season turnaround in men's hockey. We are hopeful for a large turnaround in men's basketball. Golf, we have some very good players. Same with track & field, especially the women. Maybe I'm leaving out a couple of others but for the most part, they really define "participation sports."
We've had lots of past discussions about whether or not Holy Cross has just too many varsity sports and the reasons why we have them.
So, let's get a barometer reading from the most dedicated Crusader sports fans.
Pick 5 sports that you watch with frequency and/or support financially.

Actually, I follow all of the Holy Cross Varsity sports. Have seen all live in competitions except for Men’s and Women’s Golf due to schedule. Attempted to see HC Women’s Golf in competition at a course located two miles from my home, but the weather was rainy that morning. I have even attended a HC Men’s Soccer Match at the University of San Francisco in 2003.
If a team is wearing Holy Cross, Crusaders or has the Shield on their uniforms, I am watching and cheering. Looking forward now to August and the beginning of competition for the 2023-24 HC season.

Yeah, Crucis, me too but that's why it's a forced priority poll. But watching golf? Ehh, not so much. Not even if they had a real Crusader logo on their shirts or caps. Might as well watch bowling if it was a varsity sport. Golf OK to play but excruciatingly boring to watch. Let that discussion begin!

After HC, I moved to a city that a PGA Tournament was a highlight attraction of the summer. I became involved in the organization that sponsored the tournament. Was a volunteer for 28 years on the various committees required to run the event. Saw the players, their caddies and some cases their families up close and in the club house and locker rooms. Definitely an eye opening and educational experience not taught in the classrooms. Human psychology up close. The pre tournament events with the course set up, meeting PGA officials, pairings party, celebrity nights and shows, and banquets were outstanding.
I agree just randomly watching golf can be meh…. Being involved in tournament operations on a professional level is exceptional.

I agree with Crucis as golf on the tour is incredible. As a part time tour caddie from 66-72 I found it to be a special time in my life. Two professionals served as mentors for many years after, and I was fortunate to help Ken Venturi start his broadcast career with CBS- as I said great moments in life being involved with a great sport.

I guess no surprise that football and men's basketball atop the leaderboard considering most here seem to be alums from before women were students at Holy Cross. But ladies basketball in 3rd place which is probably at least partially explained by the historic winning program.
I wanted to have a rate/rank poll but apparently not possible on this platform.

Pretty straightforward for me:
1) Football 2) Men's Basketball 3) Men's Hockey 4) Baseball 5) Men's Lacrosse => if a tie for 5th were allowed, consider WBB in a dead heat with Men's Lax. I follow the box scores for WBB more closely but make more of an effort to watch LAX when they're able to be televised or streamed. What also makes following WBB tough is the fact that they have to share my mental sports-following band-with with two other winter teams plus football when we make runs beyond Thanksgiving.
Men's Hockey would be #2 right now given the state of the hoops program and last year's resurgence on the ice under Riga. However, I haven't yet decided to splurge on FloHockey, meaning I watch more hoops on ESPN+ by default. I traveled to more hockey games last year though than I did MBB.
When I was in college two sports I followed somewhat closely were M/W Swimming and Women's Hockey due to have a bunch of friends on those teams, all of whom competed for four years. One event I enjoyed attending every year was the Worcester City Championship swim meet, which was always a close finish with WPI for 1st. IIRC, we won it in 2008 and 2009. And I always found the 2-3 Women's Ice Hockey games I attended each year (usually on my way to or from the gym) to be a very relaxing environment. I went to 3 or 4 soccer games my freshman year and then maybe 1-2 each the other years as the team was competitive during my time, and I had a lot of friends who played club who liked going to all the varsity games. A summer co-worker of mine back in NY played for Northeastern and I recall going to see him play against us up at Smith my junior year.

For me:
1) football (just enjoy watching football more than any other sport; over the years, have come to know the head coaches - Gilmore & Chesney - and a number of the players; winning doesn't hurt either) 2) men's basketball (admittedly the last 4 years, not so much, but the sun will come out tomorrow; knew some of the players in the short term past, not now; met and hope to know DP better) 3) women's basketball (just fun to watch our ladies compete with real team solidarity; think MM is taking a page from BC's book; Avery brought back my interest after having season tickets in the Maggie Fontana Weber days) 4) women's soccer (the team has struggled but knowing one of the graduating team captains who is a class act has given me an incentive to follow them more closely next season along with my old high school apparently being a feeder school for the Crusaders) 5) baseball (I've come to dislike MLB but being of an age when growing up baseball was the "national pastime," I'm hopeful the Crusaders can find success on the diamond again with "success" defined as winning the PL championship)

There is a disincentive for HC fans for following Men’s Hockey very, very closely. It is the Flo Sports package for viewing. Wish Atlantic Hockey was part of the ESPN+ package. So much easier having all the video content on one platform.
When at HC, I attended a game at MIT on a cold Friday January night. The MIT rink at the time, was an open air rink without a cover. Love Hockey, not so much Flo Sports.

the cross country and track teams (men's and women's) are first for me as a former runner, then men's hoops, women's hoops, and football.

Side note, but our rowing programs seems to be having some of its best years ever this year. Eastern Sprints should be a really fun time this year.

Football, baseball, basketball (x2) are the sports I understand best. The M.Hockey run in the playoffs earned them my fifth vote.

With me, there's football and the two basketballs....#4 and #5 are a dead heat between hockey (m), soccer (m&w) and baseball...whichever is in season.

I agree with the comment about men's hockey and Flo Sports. I follow the team closely but actually watched more women's games this year with Frozen Fenway and a few games on NESN and ESPN+. If the poll was "which sports do you watch in person or on tv/streaming most often?" I would have to switch men's hockey to men's basketball (I would say football, wbb, wih, mbb and have to delete mih and baseball).

Agree the Flo Sports is a big obstacle. If our hockey team played on ESPN+, I'd watch and follow the team more regularly. While I'll drive up 146 for football and basketball, not going to happen for hockey, men's or women's, unless it's something like a championship game.
ESPN+ you essentially get all HC sports and all PL sports for one, relatively speaking, low price. Guess it would be up to the AHA to jump on the ESPN+ bandwagon. Not sure why they haven't done so already.

I agree. Get men's hockey on ESPN+ and I will certainly watch it more frequently. What is the league waiting for?

I agree. Get menb's hockey on ESPN+ and I will certainly watch it more frequently. What is the league waiting for? Evidently FloSports isn't all bad. The CAA recently extended their deal with them. I prefer "the plus" myself. If FloHockey wasn't separate from FloSports I'd be tempted to subscribe from September thru March to watch CAA Football and the AHA. But I think the two are separate.

I believe HC currently has four sports that require a ticket to attend. Football, M&W basketball, and men's ice hockey. No shocker they currently fill the top four spots. Of the non-ticketed sports, well. . baseball is traditionally considered America's pass time

Still more than doubling up the next closest non ticketed sport and also more votes than the next 5 non ticketed sports combined

I agree just randomly watching golf can be meh…. Being involved in tournament operations on a professional level is exceptional. Watching golf live, on the PGA level is alot of fun, perhaps moreso than many other sports. HC level golf tourneys may be another story...but professional tournaments are fun to attend. You get to walk the course with the top golfers in the world. In some respects, you are actually standing on the field of play, unlike in other sports. The golfers (not all, but some) will interact with you as the day goes on. I've only been to a handful of golf tournaments, and admittedly probably would not want to go as regularly as one would attend other sports, etc, but when ive been in attendance I've had some of the most fun I've had at any sporting event.
