I attended Fr. K's wake, funeral and burial this afternoon. I have scanned the program but can't quite figure out how to download it or a link to it (yet).
As you might imagine, it was very well attended despite the general student body off for the holidays. Fortunately, Mrs. sader1970 and I got there early to pay our respects. It was an open casket but he did not look like the Fr. K that we have been used to seeing patrolling the sidelines and court. I did have to chuckle at one thing that I am sure he specifically requested having been a team chaplain for years . . . . he was wearing sneakers! The pall bearers were "Holy Cross Student-Athletes and students of the history department."
The wake was to run from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm but for many who decided to come just before 2:00 pm, they were out of luck (that included some administrators and at least one coach) because the line to view the casket was lined pretty much the length of St. Joseph's and at 1:50 pm, those on line were told to have a seat as the proceedings were about to begin.
There were probably at least 25-30 Jesuits concelebrating the Mass along with Bishop McManus of Worcester. Fr. James Stormes, rector of the Holy Cross Jesuits was principal celebrant, but Fr. Boroughs and Fr. Campbell (VP of Mission) were Fr. Stormes "seconds."
Fr. Boroughs made a nice opening "remembrance" speech talking about "Tony's" long career as a Jesuit, historian and chaplain and how long they had known each other.
Other remembrances were given by Annie Reifsnyder, Fr. K's niece and Theresa McBride, a fellow history professor of Fr. K's. Professor Ed O'Donnell, also from the history department did a reading as well as a personal friend of Fr. K's, John Johannes.
The impressive St. Joseph's organ got a lot of play while Adam Ouellet '16 (Brooks Music Scholar) was cantor and led the singing.
Fr. McFarland was in attendance and I had a chance to give him a brief hello after the burial as I was greeting my former IVC spiritual reflector, Joe Bruce, S.J. '73.
While it was not my intent to scan the audience, I did see Bill Gibbons, Bob Fouracre, Tom Gilmore, Ron Perry, Sr. there. Did not see Bill Carmody but he may have been there. Only basketball player I saw, and hard to miss, was Matt Husek.
The Mass ran over an hour and then immediate burial in the Holy Cross cemetery. It started to drizzle just as the burial service started.
Attendees were invited to stay for some refreshments immediately afterwards but we headed home.
Fr. K now "belongs to the ages" (Stanton's words about Lincoln's death seem most appropriate).
