Speculation already on Dusty May, Brian Dutcher, Nate Oats, T.J. Otzelberger, Shaka Smart and…John Beilein (Round 2). Dusty May is a terrific coach and a great guy

Ouch...that is quite a switch. Were they loyal to their former coach or was there some other issue?

Ouch...that is quite a switch. Were they loyal to their former coach or was there some other issue? It's in the players' best interests to put their name in the portal. Most likely, some will stay, some will not. Same as our guys* last year. * the notable rising seniors that didn't were transfers and the "sit out a year" rule was definitely in effect for them.

Still a gamble if a new coach thinks logically "I can win four games without these guys." Then the players have no leg to stand on if the music stops without them getting a bid in the portal. Then it's the Bubba and Louder route through Community College to climb back into the show.

Canisius has seven in the portal, too. Probably their seven best.

Kyle Smith (Wazzu and former Columbia coach) would do well at Michigan. I think Stanford will go after Kyle Smith. Smith had three good years at San Fran before taking the WSU job.

Brian Earl is the new head coach at William & Mary. I think a lot of people that know hoops will see this as W&M hitting a home run.

It was a very good pick and the program needed someone just like him

Conjecture is that Siena may look to hire Syracuse's Gerry McNamara - apparently they still owe Maciariello $800k

Earl may second guess himself if Henderson, supposedly a co-favorite, gets the Stanford gig.

we should have hired earl in 2012 Earl was an Assistant at Princeton in 2012. We had just tried an assistant at Notre Dame and would be paying him for the next three years to not coach. So we would have been paying head coach wages to two career assistants for three years. Earl didn't play on a scholarship team and has never coached or recruited in a scholarship system, or anywhere outside the Ivy League. Let's see how things work out at Bill and Mary. I wish him well. He might have worked out at HC in 2012 but he might not have been ready. No one will ever know.

To paraphrase Bob Ryan from the Boston Globe ... What's the fascination with Brian Earl?
Yes, Cornell had a tremendous season this year and maybe he was about to go on a Matt Langel-esque run at Cornell, but including this season his 7 year career Head Coaching record is 7 games below 0.500, (96-103) and 6 games below 0.500 in the Ivy League (46-52).
I don't get what makes this a home run hire for W&M and why we should have hired him 12 years ago (when we did not have an opening).

To paraphrase Bob Ryan from the Boston Globe ... What's the fascination with Brian Earl? I remember Bob saying that about Dwight Evans back in the mid 70s w/Evans and other Sox players jumping all over him for that (truth be told, Evans as a hitter didn't blossom until a few years after Ryan said that; the outrage was a bit over-the-top). Did he say that about other people, etc., too?

Did he say that about other people, etc., too? Yes. During the offseason between 2006 and 2007, the Red Sox were rumored to be interested in JD Drew, yet he was not signed. The rumors persisted and it seemed that he was a (the?) top target for the Red Sox but he did not sign until the end of January 2007. I think Bob asked Theo that question directly either just before or immediately after the signing. It became an often regurgitated and/or imitated Boston Sports Radio quip.
