They were at first the Brooklyn "Atlantics" - kind of blah as nicknames go. They took on a name associated with careless pedestrians (hint). OK, it was actually "trolley" Dodgers which fans had to do to get into Ebbets Field.

Nothing wrong with that.....Trivia question......where the name Dodgers come from, and what was the franchises' previous name ? Americans and I believe it is the subway cars Excellent guess, very close......the Robins, and named after Brooklyn fans dodging the Flatbush Ave trolley attempting to cross the street to get to Ebbets Field

Dodgers have signed highly touted free agent Yoshinobu Yamomoto spending another $325 million over 12 years for this 25 year old rightie. They will also have to pay his Japanese team a $50 million posting fee. Sox, Yankees, and Mets were all in on this guy to some degree or other. If the Dodgers fail to win a couple of world championships in the next few years, their fans will be awfully disappointed. The Red Sox were never " in " on this discussion.....we are essentially a mid-market franchise with this current ownership with outrageous ticket prices....embarrassing... “Some degree or other” was meant to show that the effort wasn’t there. It’s looking to be a hopeless off season.

I recall the name Brooklyn Superbas being associated with the club before they were the Trolley Dodgers. Not sure that was the original name.

In their inaugural National League season (1889), the Brooklyn club was known as the Bridegrooms. They were the Dodgers briefly in the early 20th century before a 15-year stint as the Robins (under manager Wilbert Robinson), then adopted the Dodger moniker for good in 1932. The Brooklyn Atlantics team was a different organization in the old National Association. They disappeared after going 2-42 in 1875.

Ruth was by far the greatest baseball player who ever lived Not disagreeing, but obscure baseball fact. Tthere was a poll many years ago about this question and the opinion back then was Cobb. Both had retired but voters would have seen them play. Fast forward 50 or so years and Ruth got the title in a similar poll even though neither Ruth nor Cobb played an inning between polls

The more you look at Cobb’s numbers the more you see his case for being #2.

I read about how highly regarded Cobb was for his skills (and that he was also a real SOB). Maybe if more folks learned about (or remembered) the latter of those two points it influenced their vote?

Greatest encompasses more than the best. Babe Ruth was possibly the best hitter (Ted Williams?) but more important Ruth was the greatest. He impacted the game like no other. Now the best player I ever saw was Willie Mays. Truly he was by far the best 5 tool player. But even my childhood idol Mays must take a back seat to the greatest of all time, the Babe. Ty Cobb vs. Pete Rose?

Having grown up seeing trolleys in Brooklyn, I understand the reference. When I visited Los Angeles, I saw no sign of any trolleys.

TBT, in my youth I was a serious Giants fan. Mays and co. captured my heart like no other.I loved to "hate" the Dodgers but had deep respect & in some cases love for the Dodgers players - Jackie, Pee Wee, Gil, Campy, the Duke, Junior, Erskine("Oisk", ) , Don, Johnny Padres & the '55 Series? Ebbetts field the Dodgers Symphony. During the season late in the game Campy at the plate and damn he would do it again. And my Giants once again would lose to those guys from Brooklyn. I realize my feelings would never be reciprocated but that's the way it was for me. Yankees, ugh! Who could not help but love those guys from Brooklyn, "The Boys of Summer"?. And, I loved the "Say Hey Kid" and my Giants infinitely more. Life was complete & good. And then suddenly they were gone! A painful emptiness beyond words to describe...The loss of the Giants & the Dodgers was a personal loss similar to a death in the family experience. It marked my childhood's end. God, do I miss those days to this very day. But, you learn. Life moves on but I have never been the same. Of course , I love the Mets but still... I can't hate the SF Giants. The uniforms still warm my heart. Still "hate" the Dodgers of LA. PS I grew close to the Yankees with those core 4 teams of the 90's. Life.

Or any lakes for that matter minneapolis lakers.....Land of 1000 lakes Right-several teams have had nicknames that made sense in the original city but not after the team moved—Dodgers and Lakers being most prominent examples but we can also add the Utah Jazz and others. In other cases there has to be a change- I believe the KC Chiefs started as the Dallas Texans for example
