We dodged a bullet by Chesney leaving when he did. Can you imagine the implosion here if Chesney were to leave HC for BC at the end of January?

Smart move by Hafley. I have no idea how he was able to swindle LaFleur.
Despite going to a bowl game this year, his seat was going to be ultra hot heading into the 2024 season at BC.

Boston College: Potential names to track as Boston College begins its search for a new head coach include James Madison coach Bob Chesney, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken and Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen, per 247Sports' industry sources. Chesney moved from FCS Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts to James Madison in December, and his buyout to take a Power Five job is reportedly $1.75 million. Let me preface this remark by saying BC being the opening in question has little to do with my thoughts on this. I'd be extremely disappointed in Bob Chesney if under this scenario he said anything to Boston College other than "No Thank You". Hasn't coached a game at his new place of employment. I think 247 Sports' "Industry Sources" are crazy.

Do people really think Chesney would consider leaving JMU for BC now?? To me that seems crazy. If he did do something like that I would lose all respect for Chesney.

Either way, it looks like he's not a candidate.
Still $3M is $3M. If he ever was offered the job, I'd have a hard time not respecting someone for quadrupling their salary.

I don't know, there's a lot to be said for committment. He's coaching young men and should be setting an example. If I hired someone and they left after a month for more money, I would think very little of them. Not the type of person I'd want at my organization. It would be a really bad look for Chesney.

Every AD worth their salt has a list they keep in his or her desk with names of coaches in case something like Hafley leaving BC occurs.
Sure Chesney was on BC's list. If it wasn't they're stupid.
Overwhelming majority would NEVER pass up an opportunity to triple their salary at the stage in their career that Chesney is in.
If BC wants Chesney bad enough they'll go after him.

If Chesney wants really big time then winning at JMU is a better pathway than losing at BC.

If Chesney wants really big time then winning at JMU is a better pathway than losing at BC. Agree 100%. Also, if Chesney jumped ship at JMU now that just shows all the players that best path for them is the next best offer. So, jump in the portal every single year to see where you can get a couple extra NIL bucks. It's a bad look for a coach.

Looks like Chesney let it leak last night he’s not a candidate. We can stop and focus on our program’s very important next 6 days.

I can't imagine Green Bay is going to pay Hafley $3 million.
And I don't know how many of BC's players entered the portal or how recruiting is going, but this sure smells like a guy who knows he is going to have problems winning next year.
The next guy can use being a new coach as an excuse for losing - but this position is starting to look like a dead end job.

I am sure Hafley is happy to rid himself of the NIL and fundraising. He can focus on coaching football. I love the quotes about how disciplined his teams are--makes me chuckle.

If he didn't have a contract past 2024, smart move; tough to be branded a "fired head coach". Didn't realize this- when a coach leaves, the transfer portal (outgoing) for that school opens up for the next 30 days. And, because there are few, if any, schools in the same boat right now (AZ, SJ State, Wash, Bama); there's little or no chance to replace the people that leave.

Interestingly, a few other schools use the Crusader 4 for the next 40 - Georgetown being one.

From CFB Focus:
Don't be surprised if Ohio State shows some interest in a Boston College offensive tackle, should he enter the transfer portal.
Ozzy Trapilo has two years of eligibility left, and was just followed yesterday by OSU offensive line coach Justin Frye.
Trapilo was one of the better OTs in the ACC last season . . . .

There was Trapilo who played at BC in the '80s.....relative?
I also wonder what Chesney was thinking yesterday. Like so much of life, things sometimes have a way of working out in the long run. Ray-Bans is much better situated at JMU moving forward than he would have been at BC imo. BC may be one of the toughest places at the FBS-level to coach for in the country right now.
