And I say, so what?
There are only two sports that the national sports landscape truly pays attention to: P5 football and big time basketball. Everything besides that is a "niche college sport" as you like to say.
HC isn't going to be in either.
Why not strive to be the best in the preeminent D1 hockey conference?

Because NOBODY cares and we would best be served trying to get in a basketball conference that people in Peoria, El Paso and Montgomery, Alabama have heard of.....joining a "Name" hockey league is like buying an Edsel.
HC could join a "Name" basketball conference just as easily as it could join the HE......it's really not that difficult if we put our minds behind it.

lol.....why am I posting here at midnight?
The truth of the mattah is that it's just sad....HC has forfeited away so much of its athletic heritage to be another Bucknell, Lafayette etc...nothing wrong with those fine institutions, but they just aren't Holy Cross football and basketball historically....it is what it is.

There is a myth that Holy Cross was a national power in football. We went to exactly one bowl game and lost that. We became among the tallest midgets in the 80's when we were mythical national champs in D-IAA (didn't play in the playoffs but ranked highest in the polls) and never won a national championship via playoffs or bowl game.
We did win national championships in baseball and basketball and we could truly have been thought of as a national power, once a long time ago, in that latter sport.
Could we win a D-IAA national championship in the future? It is certainly possible. Villanova did it and we have a lot more going for us than them, despite some people thinking we are academic peers now.
In other sports, the occasional and thrilling upsets are the exceptions (think Minnesota in hockey).
We are never going to win a national basketball championship again unless we drop down to a lower level, which I would never suggest.
We are what we are. All we can do is strive to do our best at the level we play at. But disabuse yourself of the notion we were ever a football school challenging for a national championship "at the highest levels." (my words, not yours)

There are only two sports where we have any conceivable shot of winning a national championship at the highest level of collegiate sports. Ice hockey and lacrosse. Neither is likely but it's at least possible for a school like HC in the real world.

Hockey East is about as major as it gets for a hockey conference Women's hockey is all signed up to play in HE in a couple of seasons Why would anyone involved with the city actually believe HC would want to play in a major conference in any sport? Because they're all signed up to do so. It might be a sport that 99.9 percent of the world could care less about, but it does fit in the category of "any sport" On a minor tangent, are there many examples of schools having men and women playing the same sport in different D-I conferences?

Uconn womens hockey played in the HE for a few years before their men left the Atlantic and joined the HE (when they made an arrangement with the Hartford Wolf Pack on dates at the XL Center - sound familiar ?) If things work out for us, our 'on campus' for women and 'off campus' for men arrangement would be the same as Uconn

Just how many 'home' ( DCU ) HE games would we have to schedule ? 12 teams correct ?

HE has an odd sked that includes a handful of games vs league opponents that don't count toward towards the league record. They are considered non-con games.

Although they're just trying to fill out a schedule since basically every D-II school in New England is a Northeast 10 school

They are considered non-con games. 12 home and 12 away games...Not that crazy with an unbalanced schedule now which is the crazy part. The loss of Notre Dame in the conference has screwed everything up as they actually added two conference games this season to last year's schedule

I met a few friends from HC this week who live in Worcester and strongly encouraged them to boycott the Railers and put pressure on Worcester's local pols. You have to be pretty insecure not to let HC play at the DCU. Of course locals would rather see HC take on the likes of BU, BC, UNH, and national powers like North Dakota and Minny than go see the Railers play some crappy midwest ECHL team.
Maybe we can picket the games...or show up in force like the Quebec Nordiques fans do to the Islanders and other teams

They all want - or should want - as many full dates as possible at the Centrum. If HC provides 12 or so dates when the building would be otherwise empty it's a no-brainer that the pols would already be on board. Unfortunately when bringing the Railers to town they negotiated away any ability to help make this happen Unless the boycotters were planning on going to both Hockey East games and Railers games, their boycott doesn't affect the Railers. They wouldn't come if HC joins hockey east and they're not coming now. As long as Rucker has a veto, I don't see what can happen if he doesn't want the competition

FWIW, on my way up to Worcester/Shrewsbury last night, I was on Rt. 20 and saw a big billboard that I wasn't paying a lot of attention to but said something like "Hockey is Back!" and was for the Railers . . . . not Holy Cross hockey.
I just can't get too excited about this whole Railer/HC hockey/DCU thing. While I hope HC will have the men join the ladies in HE, my world will not diminish one iota if they don't.
I guess I am much more interested in being sure a large Cross is installed or painted on the new LAC to ensure that everyone fully understands the importance of our Jesuit/Catholic identity. In fact, I think that crosses should be in every classroom on campus.

Banner ad for HC ice hockey on T&G likely reflects that you recently visited an HC site. Google remembers.
