I was of the opinion that HC should have explored paying for 2500-3000 seats at one of the two rinks in exchange for free use of the rink for competition. The cost probably would have been less than expanding the Hart.

Who cares. Go post this on the R*ilers msg board - if they even have one. Who cares? Holy Cross should care, because it appears that our only "plan" is for the Railers to fail, given that we were unsuccessful in negotiating any type of deal with the team and/or city. If we can't get a deal done (seems so), the Railers' plan is successful (unknown), and we don't make anything remotely close to a significant facility upgrade for hockey with a $95M facility investment (done deal), we are in the Atlantic Hockey for the long haul.

Well, of course they are. Those sly devils even advertised/sponsored on the local TV station during the Holy Cross - UNH game. They must really hate Holy Cross!

Sellout. LOL.

The article reads like a feel good promo piece. I have to believe any hope of a sell out is pie in the sky optimism. I am sure that there's going to be excitement for a new team and the attendance for that first game will far exceed the season average. Anticipating 20 percent more people than the Sharks ever had sounds more like wishful thinking. On the other hand, if you convince enough people that the franchise's first game is such an event that it might sell out, average guy on street might show up thinking it's "the place to be". Pygmalion would be proud of the attempt.
Although our esteemed poster from the class of '70 was clearly being sarcastic, I don't think anyone ever thought Rucker hated Holy Cross. He's just a businessman minimizing competition. Kind of like a hit in a mob movie. . . nothing personal, it's just business

WORCESTER — After a two-year absence, professional hockey returned to Worcester Saturday night, when the Worcester Railers made their ECHL debut at the DCU Center against the Manchester Monarchs.
Plenty of fans were glad to have hockey back. An official total of 12,135 of them were on hand to account for the largest crowd to welcome a new Worcester professional hockey team.

Impressive opening night crowd. It however will not be the norm as others have posted. Expect the novelty to wear off over time. If the AHL, one level below the NHL struggled here, the ECHL will eventually fare even worse. Look no further than Manchester, NH for an example.

I hope so! I also think our staff wants to catch more flies with honey and take the high road with the Railers. I think Safer Nation would be very warm to the Railers if we knew the Railers were interested in sharing the DCU.

Railers Home Games Attendance Game #1 10/14/17 SAT 12,135 Game #2 10/31/17 TUE 2,130 Some talk about this on the new when are we going to hockey east thread. 2130 was probably paid attendance, but based on some photos, actual was much lower. This was Halloween so that probably kept a number of people away

The Railers will die a quick and painful death, much like every other Pro Sport in Worcester. The team can do as much reach out, hand shaking, baby kissing, third grade reading, restaurant and rink building, t-shirt giving away and general ass kissing around the city as they want, but they will fail in short order.

The Sharks and IceCats were not failed organizations. They were pulled out of town to be closer to the parent club. The Railers may or may not succeed, but I don't think you can point to the "failure" of the last two hockey teams as evidence the Railers have no chance
