Per the Telegram article on the PawSox. . . Does anyone know why they were playing a game in the middle of the day on a Tuesday? Also posted this on the PAWSOX thread: Is having another minor league team in the city an advantage or disadvantage? Is there enough local business support to adequately sponsor two teams? Would families' limited budgets mean splitting their funds between two teams instead of exclusive loyalty? Would local sports interest be diluted? Can local taxpayers provide the financial support that would be required for two stadiums (maintain and continually upgrade both and build a baseball park)? I wonder about the long term viability of any minor league sports team in a city like Worcester. I think it would be tougher for each team to survive with the other in town.

The days of businesses throwing $ at local sponsorships simply because they feel they should are gone. And it's the same dozen or so well-heeled businesses that get their doors knocked on all the time by organizations with their hand out.

Guess the intern who submits the phony numbers to the league office forgot to overwrite his # from Saturday Fixed the error. Average was right.

They had Worcester public school kids there similar to what Gibbons does. Just for comparison sakes, BC Women's Hoops had a day game last week (Fordham hired me) and they drew 2563.

What's the best guess as to what number (real, not fake) they have to average to stay in business? That's all that matters.

Yawn. Easy article to write as he is bailing hacks like Petty and Murray out of their ineffectiveness. They should have called the article 'Shiny new Toy."
The braver story would have been to make HC and it's students 'People of the Year" for all they have done for Worcester for last 174 years.

R*ilers fan has to be a WoRag scribe seeking clicks as that's the only "media" he ever references. Fish elsewhere. You won't find too many suckers here to bite.

Who else do you think would be covering the Worcester Railers or its owners? NY Times? Washington Post? Boston Globe? Not sure why some get worked up about this minor league hockey team or its owner. If the issue is that you think that he is somehow keeping HC out of Hockey East, it is up to Holy Cross to work around the DCU. Expand the Hart rink or build another complex. We have no inalienable rights to the DCU ("Centrum" to Tom ). Did we not have chances for "upgrading" our hockey league before this guy showed up and didn't take it? He appears to be doing good things for the community. If we can't get into HE, let's first look at ourselves before we blame others.

I understand your frustration since membership in the Hockey East will most likely be determined by Cliff Rucker. The question I would ask myself is how this man dropped to the city and now has much more influence with city leaders than Holy Cross.

In all fairness, Rucker is a good choice. He has invested a lot in Worcester in 2017 and he has done it in a splashy way so everyone knows about it. Yes, he also blocked HC from Centrum use and thus messed up Hockey East, but objectively speaking from a non-HC Worcester standpoint, that is a minor negative compared to what he has done. Sure they could have gone with HC students, but 1) those good deeds are generally not known (HC is not very good at blowing its own horn) 2) that's an on-going thing where as Rucker was a big splash in 2017. You could call HC students people of year any year - keep that in your back pocket for a year when there aren't a lot of good options

I understand your frustration since membership in the Hockey East will most likely be determined by Cliff Rucker. The question I would ask myself is how this man dropped to the city and now has much more influence with city leaders than Holy Cross. That's easy. He's writing bigger checks. Long before Rucker, Worcester had a love/hate relationship with HC. The city likes the fact that HC is one of the top employers in the city (might actually be #2 after UMass). The city likes that HC writes a decent amount of checks to the City or Worcester - but the city wants more. They hate that HC is a non-profit not paying tax on that land. When the city complains about unruly students wandering Caro St or other areas in the neighborhood, they hate that the school's response is to buy up the land and take more property off the tax rolls. HC is old reliable and taken somewhat for granted. Rucker is the flashy new toy. It's kind of like Woody and Buzz Lightyear in the original Toy Story. The board isn't anti-Rucker as much as skeptical of shiny new toys. What happens next year if the city gets a puppy?

That's a "Crossports generated urban myth" that you can sustain as long as posters don't look behind the "Cliff Rucker" curtain and diligently assess H.C.'s likelihood of executing if given the chance.. But, it's a fun fantasy if you can keep enough people believing it.

Serious question - why would literally double the amount of people attend yesterday as opposed to last friday? Were there really 7k humans in the building last night? Isn’t the team not winning?

Serious question - why would literally double the amount of people attend yesterday as opposed to last friday? Were there really 7k humans in the building last night? Isn’t the team not winning? Likely because it was Friday of school vacation week when everyone is dying for a reason to get out of the house, compared to Friday of Christmas weekend. 8 years old Tommy from Worcester doesn’t care if the Railers are in first place or last place, but will enjoy going to the games if it’s an entertaining environment and he likes hockey. It’s the same reason unaffiliated minor and amateur baseball has worked pretty well in Worcester.
