Under the radar, this is an important game for HC. We haven't beaten American since January 2013. 0-8 in games against them since then. Yes, thanks to that losing streak we find ourselves 18-19 in the all-time series record. We need to even things up with a decisive win tonight

In the five games prior to Army, LeSann played a total of 9 minutes. I will be watching to see how he follows up his big game. Not just how he plays, but also how the staff treats his minutes. His normal cameo or a chance to get into the rhythm of the game? How short will his leash be?
Obviously, I'm really hoping Army was a breakout game for LeSann and not just an aberration

CLS made 5 out of 6 shots, 3 of 4 3s and a couple of nice layups. I don't expect this every night, but they were confident shots. I guess we'll soon see how "streaky" he can be...

Carmody is sometimes too quick to hook players after mistakes, but I would rather see CLS make a few errors and stay in the game to try and bust the zone defense we will inevitably see. His long-range shooting was streaky, at best, in high school and AAU play (where he shot under 30% from beyond the arc over two summers), but we need him as a deep option.

Especially with RC seemingly ailing, giving CLS some more blow could be helpful in RC's healing and CLS' development.

This was a common complaint I heard during CRW years... remember the chair next to his was used routinely for mistake makers... missing an open shot is not a mistake unless it is missed too early in the shot clock & unless we're trying to come from behind

I thought that was the story after CLS was substituted the second time. We had taken the lead, but his missed 3 seemed early in the shot clock, then the bad pass, and it was time to get Champion back in. I agreed with the move at the time.

I haven't been checking our opponents message boards this season but looked at the AU one a few minutes ago. Here's what they are saying on "PL Power Rankings" (first two below and "HC Game", the last three posts
From "Hard Core Boots" on Jan 20
Anyone who thinks negatively about the future of Nelson on this team or about his play should definitely increase their medication dose. This kid is a superb freshman, better than Mercer at this stage, and like Mercer will likely be the PL Player of the Year as a Senior- if he gradually improves his game with experience and confidence- and AU has a good team.
We saw at Lafayette what can be if Charlie is more aggressive in shooting. This team is mainly struggling so far because of scoring, and turnovers. The foul shooting will average out. When your two key position players are freshman- then expect to struggle. DJ will hopefully get his game together, so that he is a bigger force like last season. Just note the MB interview after the game. Whoever busts their butt and improves in practice gets playing time. Not complicated to him.
From "Crusader Slayer" on Jan 21
As the voice of reason on this online forum, let me point out the obvious. Yes, Sa'eed is a freshman. No, he is not the the category of Lonzo Ball, Markelle Fultz, or Dennis Smith. He is going to be a great great player for this program assuming he is he for four years. Lets also remember as it has been pointed out many times, we are a terrible shooting team, hopefully Wednesday got us going a bit but regardless, teams are going to start packing the paint making it harder for him to drive and dish. Once our guys get better, I have no doubt he will be a star in this league.
Re: HC_AU Game
From "Steve" this afternoon:
The big question for AU will be, if we try to break the zone by flashing someone in the middle, who will that be? I think Gasperini is a poor choice judging by the Howard game. Better to leave him baseline. We need someone who can pivot and face the basket and hit a foul line jumper or drive if need be. Marko Vasic proved to be good at this when he was around.
From "clawedscrew" later this afternoon
I think we normally use Charlie in that role. He has a pretty good mid-range shot if he isn't too afraid to take it and I hope we see the same aggressiveness from him that we saw against Lafayette. Jalen played 13 minutes against Lafayette, I would be surprised if he is not out there more to help stretch out the zone as much as possible. We also need to avoid some of the foul trouble Delonte and Mark got into last game.
From our good friend "notjuanjones" a few minutes ago
I agree that Mark is not the choice to facilitate from the foul line, but I'm not sure he's the baseline guy against the zone, either. That guy has to also be able to spot up in the corners, and I'm trying to remember if Mark's made a corner three all season. You could leave him in the post but you run the risk of a quick double once he touches the ball, and he's been a little shaky passing out of aggressive doubles. I really think the best spot for Mark against the zone is either up top or on the wing, ready to shoot if the ball is passed out of the corner or post. He can make that shot; it's not ideal, but we don't have a lot of options at the moment with the injuries. He only has to make one or two to get those big men to take a step up to contest. And when they do so, those baseline cutters should open up even more.
Charlie's our best post player, I think. So we should put him in the post if they go zone. Hopefully, Jalen will be on the floor a lot tonight and in the corner. Mark's up top; Sa'eed should be opposite; DJ at the high post. If we go into Charlie and they double, he either hits Jalen in the corner, DJ up top or Mark on the wing. The defense dictates where the ball goes; hit the open man, whoever it is. If it's DJ, he has to be quick with his decision--shoot, or drive. He can't pat the ball out there. If HC commits fully on the strong side, skip pass opposite to Sa'eed, who should have a driving lane weakside or 1 on 1 coverage.
These positions aren't set in stone, of course; it's just one way to attack with our personnel. I don't think we go super-small; we haven't done it all year and we'd have a hell of time rebounding with Lonnie or DJ or Charlie at the five. So if Mark is going to be on the floor, he has to be somewhere where he can score. He's 4 of 12 on threes on the road this season. I'd be very happy with 2 of 6 from deep tonight from him. Would make a big difference.

Any tips out there on any way to stream this game? I am visiting my brother, who does not have CBS Sports on his TV.

Unbelievable that the games I can't watch are televised. How much sense does that make? CBS college sports or whatever it's called sucks.

Ant with two terrific defensive efforts and deflections on one play - won't show up in the box, but he can be very disruptive.
