DP felt he was one of the two players who showed the most in spring practice. Good news The competition in June will be challenging. Academic summer session runs for 7 weeks beginning on June 3rd.

A poster on the Delaware board wrote today he had hoped the Hens would do what Richmond just did; join the PL.

We have no idea about the level of play in the NWAC and it appears the young man had no offers coming out of high school so I think I will lean heavily into taking a wait and see approach to this signing. He did make 2nd team All State in 2022 in Utah when he averaged 11 points and 7 rebounds. The level was 6A and there were 6 players selected for each of the 3 all state teams in the 6 divisions.

Are you applying for an assistant coach ? I will answer that 2 years from now. Great answer. Can anyone recall HC ever having a hoops player from Utah? I can’t.

As this evolves is see a PL for all non- revenue sports A new version of the PL for Football And if we get it right a Jesuit League- 12 teams for hoops( East and West Conference) East Holy Cross Fordham Fairfield St Peters St Joseph’s Canisius West Coast Dayton Loyola Chicago Loyola Maymount St Louis San Francisco Santa Clara I didn't realize Dayton was a Catholic School but since they are Marianist, you might have to substitute Detroit-Mercy.

Yes on Fairfield. They also had a very good big man in Mark Young. There was talk in those days of sending some of the New England teams to weaker areas like Upstate NY and DC. I don't remember it ever happening. UMass being left out one year probably contributed to them joining the startup Eastern 8. HC was the only team to make the field every year during the brief heyday, 75-79, of the ECAC New England playoffs.

This is more bball related and also related to a post from MaineJeff on another board, but how did the 7 New England schools who consistently fought for the 4 ECAC playoff spots in the mid to late 70’s, end up in 6 different conferences? (I am including UMass’ pending move to the MAC as 1 of the 6).

If Richmond does make a football move, my guess is several other CAA members go with them.

There is a very recent article in the Richmond Times Dispatch about the Spiders considering a football move out of the CAA. It is by John O’Connor, the reporter who covers the Spiders. Unfortunately, it is behind a paywall.

Beautiful. Another memo I missed, (just read about it on the Fairfield Board), is there is no longer a limit on official visits unless you count you can’t take an OV to the same school twice in an academic year and I am guessing that will go by the boards soon. Actually, even that doesn’t apply if there is a coaching change.

I guess I didn’t get the memo but for how long have college athletes been allowed to have agents? I saw the word agent yesterday in a quote from a portaler and in today’s T&G story about TJ Power transferring to Virginia, he thanked his agent among others.

TJ Power to Virginia. Hopefully, he can play D at a high level, at least for his sake.

Interesting that if this goes through, the NCAA seems to have preserved their collective phony-baloney jobs (copyright, Mel Brooks' Willam J LePetomane). Count da Money. DeMonet, DeMonet.

Portal is at 2023 after a few entries this afternoon. I don't know if they are the only school to have zero portalers but Herb Sendek's Santa Clara Broncos achieved that fete. I tried to cut and paste something that a Fairfield poster had cut and pasted to their board but it didn't work. According to Dr. Evan Miyakawa, PhD in Stats, the conference with the highest % of players enter the portal was the American at 48%, (101 players). Next was the MAAC at 47%, (78 players). The lowest by far at 16% was the PL with 28 entrants. Ivy was next to last at 26% with 35 entrants. A10 was at 32 % with 78 entrants and BE was nearby at 34%, (57 entries). For a complete ranking of the 32 conferences see the last current page of the transfer portal thread at www.scoutfairfield.com. Good possibility the PL has a good season against OOC opponents in 2024-25. Would love to see the PL above .500 to start league play. Whole lot of "The sky is falling!" comments but the above stat indicates Holy Cross and the Patriot League are doing things right. The league is #1 in the nation in retention and that is with members like HC where graduating seniors are forced into the portal when they have eligibility left for whatever reason as the school can not offer them a graduate degree. Perhaps the above stats do not include grad transfers, still impressive for the PL either way. I can’t in any way imagine the Ivy has 35 underclassman in the portal so I suspect grad transfers are included in the numbers. Based on the non conference record last year of the league and the fact PL student-athletes are quite astute, another way of looking at the high retention rate is the average PL underclassman hoops player knew there wasn’t much of a market out there for them so they opted to stay put at an excellent academic college or university at which most of them aren’t paying anything.

Honor system only #1- In the new 18 team ACC, now stretching to Berkeley and Palo Alto, which squad has lost the fewest players from this past season’s roster ? #2- How many ? I'll go with BC. As to the number, is this confined to players who have selected a new school or is it players in the portal? In any case, I'll guess 3.

According to Bart Torvik, 31 of the top 40 scorers at the mid-major level, have entered the portal as of 4-30.

Portal exceeds 2000 at 2007. I know that includes a good number of grad transfers thanks to Covid and walk-on as well, but that is more than 5 per D1 squad. Harvard’s second leading scorer, a 6’8” sophomore, is in the portal. Their leading scorer and IL ROY, has already transferred to Georgetown. A third underclassman Johnnie, is also in the portal. That is unheard of until now.

The Last Amateurs. Wow, it's like ancient history now. I actually knew that, but as we're talking about college kids who think 800K is too low an offer to stay at school, I just wanted to reinforce the idea that these kids are supposed to be amateurs. As much as I like see HC do well in hoops, I am glad HC isn't swimming in those waters. This stuff really has no business being part of the college scene.

It wouldn’t bother me if they went into next year with 12 scholarship players so they have two scholarships to work with this summer in their recruiting for the class of ‘29. BTW, next year begins in a month with the beginning of summer session.

Loos like Gabe Warren and another kid HC offered last year, McGlothin, were teammates for a year or two at John Paul ll in Plano. McGlothin is headed to Richmond in the fall. From what I have read, JP ll has been one heck of a team in recent years.
