I am not sure if you East Coast hoops fans have taken note, but we out here in the Northwest are stoked about 25-0, #1 Gonzaga, and the season they have been having. The team is unbelievably deep, with 3 guys over 7 feet who run and shoot very athletically. Very fun to watch. They continue to be my lodestar about what a small Jesuit school in an academic college basketball conference can achieve!

Unless Fr. B does a 180 from Fr. McF, Holy Cross will never go the way of Gonzaga. I don't think I exaggerate when I say Fr. Mcf was disgusted with Gonzaga athletics because they lower their academic standards to let their basketball players in.

I do like their team very much - been watching a lot of bits of WCC games on ESPN3 (the replays).USF is doing quite well under ex Columbia coach Kyle Smith.

We just had a miscreant. Is Gonzaga worse? Do they graduate their players? We don't have to mimic Gonzaga perfectly in all ways. Gonzaga is #1 and we are so far out of sight no one even knows us. Who is better known? Gonzaga or the College of the Holy Cross?

I guess the counter argument is which school is more likely to have a player go into the NBA and make a 7 or 8 figure salary and become a Goldman Sachs client?

Last night's Gonzaga win over #20 St Marys was impressive. It was the first visit by a No. 1 team to St Marys since Bill Russell and the San Francisco Dons came to Moraga in 1955. ESPN’s “GameDay” show was on hand and fans packed the aisles for the standing-room only crowd. Good stuff! We can only dream.

The only similarity with that game last night and the PL was the size of the capacity crowd--3500

True, hoops, but the WCC is closer to the PL than the Big East (or even A10) is, and those dreams still exist here. I will say, that crowd reminded me of some Hart crowds from past years.
I wonder if Gonzaga fans clamor for the Pac-12 or Mountain West -Chu Chu, any idea?

The WCC is actually the 10th strongest league according Massey (the A-10 is 8th)....BYU plays in the WCC for hoop now too. It's light years bettah than the PL for basketball.

True, '87, but let's face it: the Zags and St. Mary's are driving that ranking. Swap them for Bucknell and BU and the 2 leagues would be much closer together. Point for me is, I always bring up Gonzaga (and I know they dont hunt the same kind of kids we do) because they took it upon themselves to elevate their program, regardless of league. The WCC was not an elite league in 1999 when the Zags made their Elite 8 run with Santangelo and Frahm. They then rolled with the momentum, built their 6K facility, and the rest is history. Another example of momentum is Davidson. They go to the Eilte 8 with some kid who I hear is doing pretty good in the NBA, keep an outstanding coach, and are able to parlay that into a ramp up to the A-10. On the flip side, you have Fordham, which jumped without any such momentum. They now seem to be making progress some 21 years later. In 21 years I'll be pushing 79. Imagine had we BEATEN Marquette in 2003. Maybe donations soar; maybe the new facility upgrades commence in 2004-05. We beat Bucknell in 2005 and are the ones to beat Kansas. Maybe RW is energized and stays; maybe the indoor facility brings in an extra 4-5 quality football players to play with Dom Randolph. Who knows. IMHO, if we must have an Eddie Andelman blame pie, I say its 70% HC and 30% PL.

I wonder if Gonzaga fans clamor for the Pac-12 or Mountain West -Chu Chu, any idea? I don't think that is an issue, NAD. For one thing, Pac-12 or Mountain West do not have basketball only members, and since Gonzaga (unlike HC) does not have an extensive multi sport program, I do not think they would ever be considered. Another reason, however, is that the WCC has developed over time into a respected league. Gonzaga and St. Marys are certainly the class of the league, but other schools have good followings and occasionally make a run, such as Santa Clara, San Francisco and Loyola Marymount. The WCC has its own TV presence up and down the West Coast on Fox Sports, and they get good press coverage. The schools in the league are all quality institutions, and respected academically. I think that what they have done represents a model that the PL could follow. We need to get better! If the PL had two schools in the top 25 nationally, I for one, would be a pretty happy camper.

I would have thought Seattle (also Jesuit) when they were in their heyday was in the WCC, but just found out otherwise.
The 'originals' from 1952 and 55 included: Pacific, St. Marys, USF (Jes), Santa Clara (Jes), LMU (Jes), Pepperdine, San Jose State and Fresno State. So, basically, Bay Area and LA until later on.

Ok 2 of the starters came from UWashington and Missouri I will bet the 2 from the good schools were at or close to minimum qualifiers and would not have gotten into those schools via regular admissions, and likewise for most of the Gonzaga players who began there.

Bump. Gonzaga overwhelmed San Diego last night, 96-38. They are now 29-0 and have clinched the West Coast Conference title. I am really looking forward to their time in the NCAA tourney. If by some miracle we get in to the dance again this year, I only hope they are not our first game!
