The fact remains that BC is playing at a Power-5 level football conference....you can (and hcgrad94 does) dismiss this but their roster is made up of a lot of kids from New England/Northeast......yet they still won a bowl last year. What has Holy Cross football undah Gimore with his "national recruiting" at the the 1-AA level done lately?

C'mon guys, this sounds like the "more taste, less filling" beer commercials of old.
Football recruits, and all our athletic recruits, should be national in scope neither ignoring nor overly emphasizing a particular region. It is always annoying to see some smart, athletic, local kid not attend Holy Cross. But we are, or at least aspire to be, a national liberal arts college and one of the aims of the College is for a more geographically diverse student body which makes so much sense considering the changing demographics in the United States. I live in New England and my family roots are here but I have lived in the Midwest and other parts of the Northeast and traveled extensively around the country. New England is not a hotbed for football compared to the Midwest, Pennsylvania and down south. But there are some hidden gems nearby.

I can remember years ago when Texas and Pennsylvania high schools used to go against each other every year in a major all-star game. There were stereotypes of taller, lean (and sometimes quicker) players from Texas vs the chunkier, heavier players from PA. One reason was said to be the fact that so many Texas families held their sons out of school a year (starting later) or had them repeat a year so they would be older in high school and college. Now that is a common move across the country. I agree with sader70, that HC needs to keep national goals in recruiting because you never know where the most talented player may be found.

Kids playing New England high school football won't cut it against Clemson and FSU. A 2-14 ACC record over the last two years isn't cutting it.

Again, recruit nationally but don't dismiss New England/Northeast out of hand.

If there was a store in your neighborhood that had less selection and was always crowded, would you plan to buy most of your stuff there?

Addazio is going to lose his job sunk by too many kids from CM etc. Their kid from Palm Beach County is going to be bigger/faster/better than the kid from Norfolk County most every day.

The climate here in the sun belt is conducive for athletes working out year round. They're not used to working out in frigid temps. I would think our new indoor field will be attractive to recruits from warmer climes.

Here's a contrarian view that you probably don't agree with but using your analogy, if my local store had less selection but was always crowded, that would tell me that while fewer things to buy, the stuff they do sell must be extremely high quality or why would the place be packed? Then again, you probably like to shop at Walmart, right?

Are the three current receivers from Florida (DeNicola, Lacy, Montgomery) bigger/faster/better than Brendan Flaherty, Luke Chimilinski, and Brett McDermott -- three recent receivers from Mass? If you were going to rank all of the receivers from the last ~10 years, those guys would be right near the top of the list, along with some other northeast guys like Fess and Mistretta. It's not always the best strategy to go after the leftovers in the top top high school football areas, just like it hasn't been the best strategy for our baseball team to go after the leftovers in California and the South.

I'm not claiming sun belt athletes are better. Just that they will be less likely to turn down HC merely due to climate.

Trust me Holy Cross recruits all the best players who have grades and live in New England. The issue is that between the BCS programs in New England and especially Boston College with their Newfound obsession with local kids, plus the Ivies and CAA programs, that finite group of kids is extremely picked over. To call the kids we are getting from the southeast and other parts of the country leftovers is foolish. Many of those kids are saying no to BCS offers from lower-tier schools and our sell is a Holy Cross degree over a degree from Central Florida Etc.

Chandler Fenner and Khalif Raymond came from southern states, Pujals and Randolph came from B1G country. The argument can be made a million ways.
