...that the most prolific shot in Holy Cross history went through the twine.
I want a video. I have still never seen it.

Not sure it was the most prolific, (either Jack the Shot's or R Perry Jr.'s jumper probably was that) but was the most exciting I have seen in 56 years of watching HC hoops. Even Togo says that Chris Potter's jersey belongs hanging from the rafters of the Hart

SoS. Certainly one of the most significant shots in HC history sending HC to the NCAA tournament for th first time in 21 years----longest drought since the tournament was started and probably the first appearance that many posters can even remember. The shot itself was like Chris Potter---understated, nothing fancy but extremely clutch---IIRC about a 12-15 ft. jumper in the lane---a product of the patience that HC under GB and Jim Dougher exhibited in running the "control offense", an offense that was designed to ( and did) yield a high % of layups (in some games as many as 25 of 30 made field goals).
Not only did that game feature Potter's game winning hoop but another great shot in HC lore---Mike Vicens reverse, over the head dunk off a fast break steal from Bob Misevicius that got HC back in the game after falling behind by 7 late in the second half. A picture of that dunk hung in GB's office for many years. And a shot which, among other things, is one of the reasons that Vicens is my favorite HC player in 50 yrs. of watching HC basketball.

I saw the shot on TV. As I recall it was from about the foul line. Great, great shot.
Also saw the NCAA game against Michigan on TV. Younger posters may not be aware that Michigan was the #1 overall seed in the NCAA; HC had to play without an injured Ron Perry Jr.. Yet a layup by Charlie Brown just before halftime put HC up by a point at the half. HC hung tough until about midway through the second half.

Misevicius of PC was a HS rival of Chris Potter's when Chris played for Cardinal Spellman and Misevicius at Power Memorial, home of Lew Alcindor(Kareem). Mike V. had another exciting dunk in our next game vs No. 1 Michigan on national TV in the first round(not first 4) against Michigan's All-American and future NBA player, Phil Hubbard.

No question Potter's jersey belongs in the rafters and probably Vicens as well. These two ushered the program into another golden era by turning an 8-20 team into a 20-8 team as freshmen and in so doing brought the city of Worcester back to following HC basketball. What great times those were as each game with our traditional New England rivals was a war. The Potter shot to send us into the tournament still ranks as one of the greatest sports moments of my life. I often wonder how far that team might have gone had RP not been injured and an often forgotten fact that John O'Connor was lost for the season after only ten games. To this day I have still never seen any one other than Potter intercept not deflect an in bounding pass lay the ball in catch it out of the net and hand it back to the opponent to restart the play. He had incredible hand eye coordination. It's interesting during this time period we beat BU by at least 20 points each time we played them and invited Loyola as a sacrificial lamb to open the Hart center now we are in a league with them who would have ever thought at that time this would ever happen.

The title of this thread just reminds me how old I am. I was at that game with a couple of friends from PC. They claimed Vicens fouled Bob M as he stole the ball, I didn't see it that way and luckily the refs didn't either. When Vicens wnet up for the reverse dunk, I was afraid he was going to be a little short and bang it off the front of the rim, but he managed to get it over. Another overlooked hero was Pete Beckenbach (sp?). His career at HC started strong but he became an afterthought as time went on. His play in that tournament helped make up for Perry being out. I agree with Possum that the loss of O'Connor really hurt the team.

I believe Peter Colombo was the quarterback who last beat BC. Pete Beckenbach only played basketball.
