I think some of Rivals frustrations stems from the sense that last year's run was an aberration, which was somewhat confirmed with this year's performance. Combine that with the fact that are successes in the discussed time frame seem like a long time ago. Some poster (I forget who) while calling for Coach Brown's head came up with the metric of record against the PL top 2. Since Coach Willard's departure, during the regular season HC is 5-27 against the teams that finished 1-2 in the regular season. Looking at this cherry picked slice of recent history, it's not a stretch to say HC can't run with the PL big boys. Yes, in the last 20 years, HC has a pretty good tournament record, but that is skewed by the long ago Willard era when HC seemed like they went to the tournament final every year. My biggest beef with Coach Brown was that I had a sense that HC was going to be a middle of the pack team that never really challenged for a top spot. Meanwhile in the same time frame, Bucknell has finished in the top 2 seven out of eight years.
All that being said, I am still an optimist. When Coach Willard left, HC screwed up and hired a horrible coach. I am not as anti-Coach Brown as some other posters, but I would rate him as mediocre. That tandem dug a deep hole as evidenced by the 5-27 record. Rome wasn't built in a day and I am hopeful things are moving in the right direction. Last year the team was 5-13 in the league, this year 9-9. I'm not sure if that jump is the start of a trend or simply an expected progression from a team with one contributing senior to a team with 4 contributing seniors. I fully expect next year with zero seniors to be a step backwards. The following year, with a big senior class, I am going to be mighty disappointed if HC isn't competing for the top spot.
The day Coach Willard left, HC was a PL big boy. Since that time, I agree that HC hasn't been able to run with the big boys. The timing of the decline was such a clear drop-off, I think the answer to the question is coaching

Near as I can tell, (and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong) Bucknell is the only PL school to significantly upgrade their facilities in those 27 years. Lafayette did a major renovation of Kirby in 2013. All new seating, high pct of chairbacks, new lighting, new scoreboard/videoboard, additional end zone bleachers, etc.

Yes, Kirby got a nice $1.7 million face lift in 2013 following a $2.5 million facelift in 2000, but $4.2 million for facelifts/renovations are the equivalent of what HC did to the Hart Center gym that so many here are pooh poohing. Not exactly $32 million to build Sojka or the $95 million HC is spending on facilities now - and admittedly neither were competely basketball related investments. And will agree with Ray, coaching (and all that means in the context of college sports, especially recruiting) is paramount, but as to the question why can't HC run with the big boys, coaching for 2009 - 2015 was self evident and facilities will no longer be a major obstacle to success for a good coach.

I went to Kirby after 2000 but before 2013. The foyer/entry way was nice, but, in my opinion, the gym itself was not as nice as Hart prior to this year

Now, leaving the Kirby building at night, while the football/lacrosse field is illuminated and kids playing, is another story

Did anybody else pick up on the term to describe Alma Mater during last night's coverage of the Bucknell - Lehigh game? Not sure if it was Doug Gottlieb or the play by play guy.
Not exactly complimentary.
Set of steak knives to the first responder with the answer.

Fwiw, Sojka didn't cost even $15 million. The cost of the entire complex was $27 million, and that included Kinney Natatorium, Krebs Family Fitness Center, Berger Strength Training Center, Sports Medicine Center, plus upgrades to Davis Gym and the field house. www.bucknell.edu/x14276.xml

Spoke with Fr K after he toured the football and basketball complex in the CSK year. Fr K was in awe at how nice they were. He commented that Fitton has visitors' locker facilities that makes one wonder if Knute Rockne was about to emerge. How nice of an upgrade did our bball lockers get? Water pressure used to be so bad recruits would be brought back to the dorm to shower. We are way behind Bucknell and the USNA., way ahead of LU and Colgate, and even with Army and American. imho

That said, ever optimistic and hope springs eternal. Using a new slogan, now. "With it or on it." (I am sure the Classics scholars in the audience know where this comes from.)

I like it given the new HC logo shield.

Doug Gottlieb's a low life anyway...... I would generally agree but a friend of mine wound up living next to him when Gottlieb was at ESPN and they became good friends. My friend says he's a great guy. Was really good to my friend's son. So I'm willing to believe he has become a much better human than I would have otherwise thought.

As much fun as last seasons 5 game win streak was, a 20 loss season and getting beat by almost 50 by Oregon and seeing what our senior laden class did this year, shows how much weight we can put on that. Don't make it worse than it was........I recall the final score differential was 39 points in the Oregon game. More than enough.....!

Allegedly said by Spartan mothers to their sons. I recently had a student whose parents are from Sparta. She assured me it was AND STILL IS true

The scene with Alec Baldwin sends chills down the spine to anyone who has worked on commission and been the victim of a hot shot like Baldwin. That scene was very true to life. When I was selling on straight commission it was the most gut wrenching experience of my life.

TD, Where do I pick up my knives ? How did you type those Ancient Greek letters ?

The knives can be picked up at the Customer Service booth just beyond ADNP's Office. In all seriousness, let's do one better. Let's commit to a joint tailgate next fall and we can have a formal ceremony awarding you "set of steak knives." Perhaps we can do it at the Ring of Honor tailgate prior to the UNH game in mid-September if you plan on attending. I just used my Ancient Greek letters keyboard with my new high tech computer. No, seriously, I just copied/pasted and then edited.

Will Pete Kimener be inducted ? Before Pete can be inducted, he has to be nominated. I will say that I had one of the single most pleasurable conversations I have had with any Crusader with Pete on the morning of last year's RoH ceremony. What a guy and looks like he could still strap it on and go across the middle still today. He too wants to see the Purple reign. η ΤΑΝ Η ΕΠΙ ΤΑΣ
