Women must be equal to men in all things. So why should their names be spelled differently. It's just male chauvinism. Right?

Is Michael spelled with two 'l's?

Worked with two women in an HR department. One spelled "Michelle" and one spelled "Michele." No one made a big deal of it.
As for Holy Cross' new "Michele," best of luck. Jackie Peterson can't leave fast enough as far as I am concerned.

Just a matter of respect for the French language. That's all. If you don't care, so be it.

Picked up a copy of The Crusader a few weeks back and there were brief profiles of the 4 finalists for the position. Based on that limited information, Dr. Murray would have been my first choice.
Congratulations to her and welcome to Holy Cross.
As to the spelling of her first name, not sure it matters that much, but FWIW, isn't Michelle the anglicized version of the French Michèle?

I believe the conventional wisdom is that in English, "michelle" ought to refer to a female and "michele" to a male. But I could be wrong.

I've always thought of "Michel" with no "e" at the end as the male name, as in Michel Jazy the great French miler. A male named "Michele" does not come immediately to mind

I can't help it if she doesn't know how to spell her name!
