128, not wishing to take anything away from the great work that you do for the football program, which you know I heartily support, I really don't care to see the word "color barrier" attached to Holy Cross as it implies a racist element.
Having lived on campus and experienced the events that are most accurately captured in the book "Fraternity" and conceding that there were too few black and other students of color on the Holy Cross campus, rather than a "barrier," I always felt that a large part of that deficit was its self-fulfilling nature.
Because there were so few blacks, undoubtedly others did not want to attend, which then dissuaded others from coming. The guys that Fr. Brooks brought in were not the first black students at Holy Cross by any stretch (see first Holy Cross valedictorian). Classmates Bob DeShay and Art Martin, a great track star, were real heroes who helped the "Fraternity" group acculturate to the campus. There were others before them. Some of those names you mention were in all probability going to come to Holy Cross regardless of Fr. Brooks as they were on campus for their athletic prowess and able to meet Holy Cross' high academic standards. They didn't come to Holy Cross despite being black or because they were black, they came because they could make a significant contribution to the campus both on and off the field or court. And they did.
The black student walk-out was a painful experience for the entire campus. The disproportionate of number of protesting blacks suspended was not racist, though understandable why they would feel that way. Because of the few number of blacks on campus, they were more high profile and more easily recognizable. If we had a group all over 7 feet tall protesting, they would have been disproportionately identified for suspension too.
In the end, Fr. Brooks and Fr. Swords especially, took courageous action to remove the suspensions despite heated pressure from the media and many alums.
What Stan and Eddie and Clarence and Crossports' own Crucis did was to stand together and establish a core of men who made the Holy Cross campus more welcoming for future generations and to help create the much more diverse student population we now have.

a real shame with this weather today in the northeast - cold and rainy - kudos to td128 and his committee for putting together today's event. I have a feeling they will find a way to play a little golf and still have a big success

A few Twitter pictures from the Golf Outing today.
I believe I am in this picture, although barely visible and with my back to the camera. Love the purple and white pants.
Gordy Lockbaum in the light gray (center, right).
As can be seen, not a great day weather-wise; golf was cut short by rain. But a great day for chatting with former players, current coaches, and many supporters of HC football.

That's Bill Cowley talking to the purple/white pants guy (Gilmore? Chuckie Doyle?) Nope. There were two guys in purple/white pants at the outing yesterday. I believe they were team members in the early 1980s.

This was sent yesterday to the faithful:
Fellow Crusaders,
The weather may have dampened the golf but it certainly did not dampen the spirits of the faithful at Hopkinton CC yesterday. THANK YOU again to all who were in attendance -- especially those who came from a distance to make the day so special -- and all who sponsored the event. I want to especially thank the members of the Golf Committee and the staff and student-athletes from campus who worked the event. THANK YOU.
We not only raised very meaningful funds (~85k) for the program but we also continue to raise expectations in terms of the impact that the Friends of Crusader Football can have in elevating Holy Cross Football to ever greater heights. That does not happen without the support of all of you. I hope you will care to spread the word to your fellow classmates/teammates not currently on board and encourage them to attend/support in the future.
Special thanks to Heather Palmer (and best wishes to her in her new role at UMass) and fellow FoCF co-chair Spenser Huston for his special delivery in honoring our fellow African American brethren with the 2017 Jackie Mo' Award. How special was that.
Personally I have not often been more proud to be a Crusader than to see our fellow Crusaders receive that recognition along with the remarks by Joe Wilson, Mark Cannon, and Rod Deleaver. That was awesome.
I hope you all enjoy the balance of the summer and that I will see many of you throughout the fall (UConn, Ring of Honor, Homecoming and more) when the Crusaders take the field.
Let's Win!!
LD
P.S. Please circle next June 18th when we will hopefully have some sunny skies for our event.
