I heard early June, maybe next week, for practices to begin for returning players. Just a rumor.

Camps are at the end of June. Players are usually counselors there.

From the camp brochure
So, at least some of the players will be in town at the end of the month. Since this is a day camp, the guys will have a decent amount of free time. It is not unreasonable to assume that in addition to video games, movies, phone-staring, burgers, etc that a bunch of teenagers/20 yr olds might play a little pick-up ball or even make use of any work out facilities to kill all that free time

Is this a matter of "practices" or intrasquad pickup games being okay as long as the players are on their own, i.e. without coach contact?

In general, the answer to your question is "yes" There are some very specific rules about what coaches can do in the summer. I don't know all the rules, but I imagine Bison could enlighten us. Over and above the "on their own" stuff, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that coaches might take advantage of most of the kids being in town and spend evenings doing whatever is permissible under NCAA rules

Coaches can review with the counselors what they will be teaching the next day to the campers. If that happens to be the HC defense or offense, that is a nice coincidence.

Coaches can review with the counselors what they will be teaching the next day to the campers. If that happens to be the HC defense or offense, that is a nice coincidence. My nephew, as a rising high school junior, went to an elite camp at a Power Five school a few years ago. I don't want to identify the school, because I don't know whether the camp went up to the line, or crossed over. In any event, as I understand it, the campers were paired with varsity players, so a side was either two or three campers and two or three varsity. And the sides would proceed to run the team's offense (and defense). The coaches would give instructions to the campers, but not the varsity (who presumably already knew the plays and sets). IMO, these sort of drills do not constitute 'practice' from the standpoint of the varsity. I assume, if a camper had arrived with no offer in hand, this did not constitute an official or unofficial visit. IIRC, my nephew was occasionally paired with a camper who subsequently went on to play for the school, and the NBA.
