Basically every HC hoops freshman I have talked to in recent years has commented on the physicality of the college game vs the high school or prep school game. Once upon a time the naturally strong kid had an advantage that he could utilize. Then kids started getting into strength training to get that advantage. Now almost everyone does it and you need to be on board just to keep up Most interesting. At least they no longer concentrate on bulk and fast twitch fuscke alone. When Coach Brown was new at HC he was asked about strength training. He responded saying that a couple of players (Beinert and Brown) looked like body builders and he wanted to focus on training that would also help with flexibility and quickness. All in line with the articles total approach vs just putting up a ton of weight

I recall a season many years ago when CRW said, at the season's end, that he wanted to work on conditioning as he felt the team needed to be in better shape. I think that was 2002-2003 (we went 13-15) because when you look at the stats for the season you see that we outscored opponents 846-716 in the first halves of games but were even (916 to 918) in the second halves of games. So, that would suggest that we often ran out of gas. The next season, presumably helped by that better conditioning, we went 26-5, outscoring opponents 977-868 in the first halves and 1129-925 in the second halves. Of course I know that other factors come into play between first half and second half: foul trouble, team depth, etc. Still, it impressed me about the effect of better conditioning, and I certainly enjoyed the 26-5 record.

Ayou may have your years mixed up 2002-03 we made it to the dance and lost to Marquette, still hurts Right you are: it was 2003-2004 when we had the stats I quoted and the following year 2004-2005 when we excelled in the second halves of games. Sloppy work on my part
