breezy, you probably don't have the explanation, but twitter.com/HCrossEQ has not tweeted since February 11. That twitter was a great source of info on uniforms, new locker rooms, etc., but now nothing. Its almost as if the person doing the tweeting left HC.

I had noticed that as well. According to the Athletics Staff Directory, the same people are listed as Equipment Managers, but I don't have any explanation as to why the tweeting has stopped.

Jon Jon Roberts from PA has transferred in from Navy. Will play WR.

I saw that Roberts was added to the roster yesterday. I initially assumed he was a walk-on; did not realize he was a transfer. Do you have any other information about him? Doing some further checking, I see that he was rated at 2* (5.3) by Rivals as a WR and was rated 2* (77) by 247 Sports as a QB at the time he committed to Navy.
Also added to the roster is a freshman walk-on from my home town in New Jersey, RB Matt Varano. My understanding is that he had some serious recruiting interest as a HS senior but it dissipated when he suffered a serious injury. He took a year off to recover, was admitted to Holy Cross, and has now been added to the roster.

So if he us on the roster does that mean he is eligible to play? I thought transfers had to sit out a year. Does that not apply coming from the service academies or because he is dropping from D-IA to D-IIA? Or do I just have this whole thing mixed up about sitting out?

BCS to FCS eligible immeditaely. CAA type schools are loaded with kids like this. Looks like an athlete who can hopefully help us at WR.

Wow - WR just went from a position that I was a little worried about, to one with great potential.
Roberts (4.51 40, per his Hudl) and Cozier flying around the field could be very exciting to watch for the next 3 years!

Think most expected that to have already happened. HC can use that talent on the field more than as a bench-based back-up even as 3rd string to QB!

With these changes, HC looks to be putting together a potent group of receivers for Pete.

Since DEFENSE has been our primary problem, I hope we'll soon hear something positive on that front.

Will HC have a scrimmage with any other school before we take on UConn?

Will our OL be strong enough to give PP time? That's usually the Achilles's Heel of our kind of offense.

I think the OL over the years has generally given our QBs time (yes, always exceptions). The problem seems to be the blocking on runs. We seemed to frequently have had large, slow OL that take up a lot of room but can't get out and block going forward. Just MHO.

When you pass almost all of the time, and fail to gain good yardage when you do run, even an offense with a good pass blocking line will have a difficult time controlling games. Can't pass without your opponent respecting the run. Can't win games with your defense on the field most of the time, unless your defense is especially strong, which ours isn't.

Holy Cross Time of Possession by season 2007= 29:03 2008= 31:49 2009= 28:34 2010= 25:03 2011= 30:00 2012= 27:46 2013= 28:41 2014= 29:16 2015= 27:48 2016=29:00 Certainly I agree that in general it is good when a team's "time of possession" is high. Still, there can be some striking anomalies. In that 2010 season when HC had the very low 25:03 time of possession, I checked just two games, the last two of the season. In the penultimate game HC won at Lafayette 37-27 with 19:32 time of possession and then beat Bucknell 34-9 to end the season and had 23:20 t-o-p in that game. Strange...

Just another way overrated stat. Scoreboard please.

Post by WCHC Sports on Aug 7, 2017 8:37:31 GMT -5
Time of possession is a stat that is almost worthless when reviewing our offensive prowess, given the type of offense that we run. Anything shotgun, 4/5 wide or spread, is going to be so heavily weighted for the pass. You don't need me to tell you that an incomplete pass stops the clock: A bad pass play stops the clock, and a bad run play inbounds keeps it going.
With the pass-wacky offense, there's not a reliable stat on offense to lean on for trends other than the scoreboard.
Many other posters have said before that one of our big weaknesses throughout the past ten years has been run defense. THAT is where time of possession will shed light on our success. Teams that have the lead have been able to run down our throats and cement games away while burning off lots of time from the clock. Even when playing from behind, opponents could run at will against us. This has always been a big strength of Fordham's and Colgate's, and one reason why I think they have fared better than HC during that timeframe.
