Because there were offsetting penalties, SF punted again, and Kalif returned the ball for about eight yards. Made an initial move, made a defender miss, and got positive yardage. Play by play man questioned whether Holy Cross even had a football program. Not surprising given the last 25 years..... Very predictable.

And truthful....who has heard of Holy Cross football since the early '90s? We have been practically invisible as a program since we dropped scholarships. Will that change? Hopefully...we'll see.

Sorry, I'm throwing the B.S. flag on that call. While no one would accuse Holy Cross and its football program to be competing with OSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, we play and have been playing, division 1 football forever. This is gross dereliction of duty for anyone announcing a professional game to not know this. Heck, I've watched games when the players in the pre-game announce where they played high school ball when they never went to college. As low as our program fell, we were not a D-2 or D-3 program. I am sure this must have been said tongue-in-cheek.
Btw, 87, we get it, we know your position.

Who was the play by play guy? Do we have contact info for him? Think I might send him a hat and put him on our Friends of Crusader Football distribution.

87, I will go with the assumption that you are Class of '87.
Football records the years you were at Holy Cross:
'83: 9-2-1 with a 28-21 loss to Western Carolina in the I-AA playoffs '84: 8-3-0 '85: 4-5-1 (what happened?!) '86: 10-1-0
Year after you graduated: 11-0-0
Guess what? Those years were the exception to the Holy Cross football "rule." Stop trying to equate by implication Holy Cross football to Notre Dame or Ohio State. We had a great run especially under Duffner. Can we come back to that at the level we play at, I-AA? I certainly hope so.
The reality is that somewhere between a mythical giant in football or an "invisible program" has been the reality for the Crusaders. And there's a lot of space between those two extremes.

And there's a lot of space between those two extremes. The thing is, as a son of an alumnus of HC, I've been following HC football fairly closely since at least the early 1970s. I have seen or been to the highest of highs in that era (wins ovah BC, wins at Army, the entire 1987 season etc) to the lowest of lows (losses to schools like Bryant, Wagner, blow-out losses to Harvard etc). My point here is, if you are roughly undah 40 or so, Holy Cross football has been "invisible" to the vast majority of people outside of we diehards here....particularly contrasted with the 1980s when HC was regularly on network TV, had a Heisman candidate etc etc What's done is done, and like you, I hope we are back on track in gaining visibility once again.

In all fairness to the announcer, it has been 25 long years since HC has had a player drafted into the NFL so I'll excuse his unfamiliarity with the fact we still play football. From his perspective, we have been an invisible program...maybe he thinks that we are like BU and Northeastern.

In fairness to the announcer, if he is just filling in to avoid dead air, he should not make statements about topics on which he seems to know so little. Was his the "expert" commentary?

rickii, I am serious about this whole myth about how great we have been in football. We had a great run of whatever it was, 7-10 years. Other than that, we have been mediocre at any level we played at since the late 30's-early 50's. My definition of mediocre is .500 +/-.
We can and should be better and our expectations should be higher but not based on history. Those Carter/Duffner years were the exception to the rule. The attitude of some is that Tom Gilmore has followed a string or coaches equivalent to Rockne, Hayes, and Bear Bryant.

From The Denver Post tonight re: the WR battle:
Much of the competition at this spot could depend on what the Broncos do with rookie Carlos Henderson, who had surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament Aug. 13 and has no definitive timetable for a return.
Joseph indicated Saturday that the Broncos are likely to carry six wide receivers on the active roster. If Henderson, a third-round pick, were moved to injured reserve, that would seemingly open a spot for Kalif Raymond or Jordan Taylor to make the roster. Rookie Isaiah McKenzie, a wide receiver from Georgia, has already been named the Broncos’ starting punt returner, and Bennie Fowler and Cody Latimer are likely to fill in the spots behind Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders.
Raymond and Taylor have had strong performances of late. Taylor caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Siemian in Saturday’s game against the 49ers.

Kalif only recorded one third-quarter catch for 9 yards last night (24 if you count the defensive taunting penalty tacked onto the end of the play). He did not get credited with any returns. McKenzie has two punt returns for 3 yards. Some other guy had one kick return. The other kickoffs must have been touchbacks. Don't know if Kalif had any fair catches on punts or touchbacks on kicks. Starting to get a bad feeling they're going to release him and try to put him back on the practice squad. Hopefully he gets a 53-man spot elsewhere even if it's the Jets.
From the Predominantly Orange blog before last night's game:
KALIF RAYMOND, WR/KR
Things are still unsettled for the Broncos at the kick return position, though special teams coordinator Brock Olivo admitted it was Cody Latimer’s job to lose at this point in time.
That doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but there’s one player in particular who could prove his value not only offensively, but also as a returner on special teams.
Kalif Raymond was one of the Broncos’ kick/punt returners last season, and Denver had to promote him from their practice squad after he received interest from other teams looking to poach him.
The Broncos’ scouting staff likes Raymond a lot, and with Gary Kubiak keeping his watchful eye over preseason game number three, it wouldn’t come as a shock to anyone if the Broncos found a way to get this guy on the roster. He’s got a lot of big play ability.

From 9News a few hours ago predicting the 53-man roster:
Receivers (7)
Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Bennie Fowler III, Jordan Taylor, Isaiah McKenzie, Cody Latimer, Kalif Raymond.
Practice squad: Hunter Sharp.
Injured reserve: Carlos Henderson
Note: This is one more receiver than ideal but I couldn’t cut Latimer because he’s so good on special teams – and Broncos’ special teams units have showed during the preseason they need him. I couldn’t cut Raymond because he’s too dynamic as a returner and receiver. And Taylor made the team with his far-reaching reception performances in preseason games No. 2 at San Francisco and No. 3 against the Packers.

I hope Kalif picks a good person to handle his money. There are so many investment managers, CPAs, etc. who steal their athlete clients' money.

USA Today is dead to me. From their recent article on who will be cut from the Broncos:
Wide Receiver
Cuts: Kalif Raymond, Anthony Nash, Marlon Brown, Hunter Sharp
Probably the hardest decision I had in putting this list together was whether to include Kalif Raymond or Jordan Taylor. Both players deserve to be on the team, but there is solid depth in front of them.
Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Bennie Fowler, Cody Latimer and Isaiah McKenzie will all make the team. I just feel that the plays Taylor has made in recent games have made him almost impossible to cut. In fact, he’s a much better player than Fowler or Latimer in my opinion, but those two appear to be safe.
Third-round pick Carlos Henderson might find himself on an injury list to begin the year.

From a MileHighReport article on practice squad eligibility:
Kalif Raymond: WR and returner. He's small, but he's fast and he's quick. Signed with Denver as a CFA in 2016, and spent most the season on PS, but got promoted to the regular roster, largely due to Jordan Norwood's ineptness as a punt returner, and played in 4 games. I think his chances of making the 2017 roster were doomed from the moment the Broncos drafted McKenzie, but he's had a good TC, and I'd love to keep him on PS IF he clears waivers.

I hope KR goes elsewhere where he would be more appreciated. It would be icing on the cake if it would be a Bronco divisional rival where he might burn them in a game.

Kalif's post-game comments below. Sounds like he might be moving on from the Broncos. Thank God I didn't buy any gear yet.
DENVER—Kalif Raymond so badly wanted to make the Broncos’ 53-man roster, he caught a 58-yard punt at the 1-yard line.
Returned it 9 yards, too. Can’t make the team by the letting the ball bounce it into the end zone.
“Oh man, I wanted to make a big play so bad,’’ said Raymond, who also had a nice, turn back for the ball, 12-yard reception. “But I felt so good back there. I’m hoping that shows on tape. I’m comfortable as all outdoors. If I’m here or somewhere else, it doesn’t matter, I feel like I’m going to make a big impact this year for sure. I feel good.’’

Patriots need a return man after Cyrus went done. Kalif to Pats would be nice but not likely.
