Thought I would make this a separate thread as we discussed whether a 1 year player at Holy Cross should ever be in the HC HOF. I opined not. Absolutely coincidentally, and along the lines of our famous Ocean State saying, "I know a guy," I was talking with my landscaper who was taking bows for the job he did putting in my patio last year. He told me later that he hoped I didn't mind but he has brought around some other prospective customers to show off his work. I told him if he did it more than a couple of times I would have to charge admission. Anyway, to make a short story long, yesterday he said that one of the people who he put in a similar patio "but much larger" was some "NBA guy who lives in Narragansett." Peaked my curiosity, so I asked him who it was. He tells me Kevin Stacom (I had no ideas he lived in RI). I said you are kidding, right? He says no, he's a regular customer and would be down there today to trim his trees and bushes. He said that he knows Stacom played for Celtics with Ernie D and was doing something for an NBA team. He finally recalled that Kevin is a scout for the Dallas Mavericks. My landscaper had no idea Stacom played at HC and was actually not even real familiar with him having played at PC. So, small world, especially in Rhode Island, but I still don't think he should get any plaudits from Holy Cross. Couple of links though one said he lives in Newport: www.celticslife.com/2011/04/what-hell-happened-tokevin-stacom.htmlbasketball.realgm.com/staff/Kevin-Stacom/Summary/757

Stacom has lived in RI for decades and been an owner of several bars/restaurants in Newport over the years. I believe that he now is an owner in the Waites Wharf and At the Deck Bar establishments. He previously owned the Mudville Pub and the Dockside. www.waiteswharf.com/Many former area college hoops players and coaches still live in the area with South County by the beaches being popular. Ernie D has also lived in Narragansett. Former Fordham/URI/Texas/GW coach Tom Penders is a year round Narragansett resident. Former UConn coach Jim Calhoun has a summer house in South County and can be seen out and about at restaurants.

You can add Houston and Columbia to Penders extensive list

NO WAY that Kevin Stacom should make the HC HOF and I'll give very long odds that he ever will.

Obviously no way Stacom belongs in HOF but I spent a lot of time around field house at that time and Stacom was a true gym rat who was always there working on his game. Although it was tough to see him leave he made the right move from a basketball perspective as the program was at that point treading water or regressing under Donahue and Providence was in the process of building a true special team with a great coach. It pains me to say that because I truly hated PC and rooted for them to lose every game including exhibitions to the Russians.

agree... although HoF committee has its standards, observing from the outside there is a lot of judgement and politicking involved

I think Stacom is in Jamestown.

The "I know a guy" I know says that Stacom and Ernie D have been friends since their playing days and still remain best friends. While I didn't check it out, supposedly Kevin got Ernie D a similar scout job with the Mavericks and that both of them, when they were in the NBA together, "took care of" Marvin Barnes when he had his difficulties, not of the on-court variety. My guy mows his lawn and handles his landscaping and says Kevin is in Narragansett, not Jamestown, though who knows, he may have multiple residences. I'm told Kevin is on his 3rd or 4th wife (whose counting, unless you are president?). The current wife is "very young" but I would certainly expect an NBAer to trade in for a newer model. I was PM'd that Stacom lives in Saunderstown but that is consistent with my info as Saunderstown is a village within Narragansett. Whatever . . . . keep him out of the HC HOF!

I know, hence the wink. Really just having some fun here perhaps at Kevin's expense as I suspect if we met, we'd have a lot of laughs. I am sure he is a nice guy but I guess it is not 6 degrees of separation, just 2 for us. We not only have the common experience of HC but of being New Yawkers transplanted to the Ocean State. Which happens a lot in RI.

Stacom is a good guy...very approachable....talked hoops and other things with him for awhile a few years back at the Brick Alley Pub in Newport. Kinda forget if we broached his HC to PC decision.
As an aside, he obviously didn't do anywhere near enough to gain HC HoF status whilst at HC but is there any "rule" on what people who transfer out of HC have to accomplish etc to gain entry? The obvious example would be George Connor who transferred to ND but is in both the HC HoF and football Ring of Honor I believe.

Here's my rule when I get asked to be a voter: I don't care what you do after you leave our college, it will have no bearing on HC HOF voting. So, for example, if you play a year of basketball at HC, then transfer out and lead the nation in scoring in another D-1 school for the next three years: no vote from me. I met George Connor at a HC Club of Chicago gathering decades ago--pleasant fellow.

No way.... Absolutely not worthy of HC HOF. Nothing to do with transfer, simply not a good enough HC resume.
