How about the glory days of the 60s, esp in Football ? A strong schedule in the late 60s, with some BIG wins (Dartmouth and BC come to mind immediately)...but overall not great win/loss records. The big losses to Syracuse come to mind - unfortunately. In retrospect, the program in those days was at a higher level, but not nearly as high a level as some here like to think it was. It was probably closer to being discontinued than it is now, especially after the events of 1969.

Agreed....I know dropping football was either under an official or unofficial study then...remember it being brought up at the time amongst older alums then as a kid. I would argue (not that it matters) that HC as a "university/1-A/FBS" program basically ended when Dr A retired in 1964....as you mentioned, we remained 1-A really in name only during the rest of the 1960s, the 1970s and into the early 1980s before the 1-A/1-AA split in 1982.

It would be interesting to see a "retroactive Sagarin" ranking for those years to see where we ranked in the D-1 ladder

I was at a counseling EXPO with school counselors from Westchester, NY (and visitors from CT and NJ) heard presentations about school counseling. There were many colleges there to speak with the counselor and then to meet and recruit high students in the evenings. I spent some time taking with the Monmouth representative. He was a former player at Monmouth and had seen their game vs HC. He could not stop raving about PP, saying he thought he had a real shot at the NFL. They spent a lot of time preparing to defend him and felt that i almost did not matter what they did because he would get his receivers the ball. He felt they were fortunate that receivers did not always hold on to the throw. He was also surprised at he defense, but felt the injuries to HC DBs may have helped to give Monmouth some of those big plays.
He spoke of the new facilities at Monmouth and said that HC was clearly a step ahead in that area. He asked if I knew anything about HC's next coach. I confessed ignorance, but hoped Coach Rock would get things tightened up for the rest of the year. Nice to hear an opposing fan say some good things about HC.
PS: Sad that HC had no one there.

(it was 20 then, not 25). But that may have been more the way people voted than actual strength. Something more "scientific" would be interesting You'll also note that circa 1964 college football became the two platoon* game it is today. It's my opinion that had an effect on smaller schools. You didn't need as many good players to compete. * I got to see Ernie Davis play when I was in the 5th grade, BC vs Syracuse. Not only was he a great running back but the final 2 tds in a 28-13 win were Pick 6s by Davis.
