Drone view (from architect's page, first week of April. The perspective is from the west (generally). The axis seems to be NW to SE. ^^^ From mid-May. The wing on the left is next to the blue lift equipment in the drone picture. The top of the stairs of the right building wing is at extreme right in the above frame. The main entrance is behind the half/wall of red paper om the left wing. Fr. K. has mentioned that they hope to hold departmental retreats (academic, not religious) at the contemplative center. Also, I believe the center will be used for non-HC retreats. Conceded, that the center is not rustic austerity (this is not camping out at Walden Pond), but neither is it this.

As a former member of the New England branch of the Ignatian Volunteer Corps which rotate monthly meetings in Boston, Worcester and Providence with annual retreats at Weston, my hope is that they will be able to utilize this site when finished. Meetings in Worcester used to be in Ciampi but then moved to Hogan when the group got too big. While many of the Jesuits involved as "spiritual reflectors" or chaplain to the group for the IVC are BC based, some are based at Holy Cross or have the Crusader connection as either former teachers or alums from HC including Jim Hayes, S.J. (HC alum and current Associate Chaplain at HC); Joe Bruce, S.J. (HC '73), Si Smith, S.J.(HC alum and IVC chaplain), Jerry Finnegan, S.J. (based currently, but leaving shortly, in Woonsocket, RI); Walter "Skipp" Conlan, S.J. (ex- HC'70, based in Jesuit Community in Boston), etc. I think these guys collectively have the "juice" to get meetings moved from Hogan to the new Contemplative Center.

From mid-April, HC Chaplain's twitter feed. ^^^Looking north, in the direction of the webcam. ^^^ Looking south. The room in the foreground is the left wing seen in the webcam capture in the post above. _____________________ A consideration / constraint in outside groups using the center is that I believe HC agreed to limit the number of parking spaces, IIRC, to around 25 spaces. ____________________ Another mid-April image from the HC Chaplains page. Residential wing, looking northeast.

This image is a model of the site plan. The perspective is from the south looking north. East is to image right. The existing house (to the north of the center, and where the webcam is installed) is being retained, but looks to be re-cladded with the cedar? planks that are going up on the center. Webcam shows wood planking being installed on the center. Small parking lot, upper center left. Light gray road ending at cul de sac at the bottom of the image is probably for emergency vehicles only.

Some additional renderings. ^^^ Looking from the southeast to the northwest. East is at the top, north is image left. The webcam is in the "existing cottage", no. 7 on the map, and looks to the south / southeast. There is also an existing barn and an existing garage, which apparently are being saved along with the "existing cottage*". *If a 10 room Colonial style house can be deemed a "cottage". Main level. North and the webcam location are frame left. Chapel has elliptical rows of facing seats. Banquet hall? has the round tables. To its left was what I took to be cafeteria style dining. To expand image size, click on the image and open it in a new tab.

A good thing is that, if we ever need to, we could sell it as a resort.

The original house had a pool and a cabana. The house is being saved. IIRC the discussion with the West Boylston town fathers, HC is to construct an underground cistern, several tens of thousands of gallons, to serve as a water supply in the event of a fire.
So a swimming pool had a practical purpose (if it was kept from freezing).

Looked at the retreats posted today. They start in September and offer a wide appeal (including one with an LGBT focus). Left out are retreats for married couples (not only those "about to be" married). I plan to attend one as soon as I look at them in more detail.

I removed everyone from my "ignore" list and will have to re-consider that action.

The above article mentions that Joyce was from New Rochelle, NY. When I was teaching at Iona College (in New Rochelle) I seem to recall that Joyce was a significant benefactor of Iona as well as HC.

If this retreat center is already fully booked I wonder if this will be a profit making enterprise for Holy Cross. If so, will they pay property taxes. I can see a fight with the town of West Boylston coming....

I can see a fight with the town of West Boylston coming.... Assuming we don't pay property taxes, I would hope that the College makes it available for some sort of local use to make up, to some degree, for taking it off the tax rolls. It is the right thing to do and the cost to the College of allowing use when the building would otherwise be empty is minimal.

Since I'm back in the IVC, it is my hope that the New England IVC can use this location for meetings and our retreats rather than go to Weston.

You can see the lot in the upper center of the image of the site plan. There may be opportunity for parking on the road leading up to the Joyce Center (darker gray) but I doubt that is more than two lanes, or one wide lane with shoulders.

My understanding for a campus based event, a bus will be used for transport for a single event at JCC.
