87, you are a genius. However, who are these well heeled alums of whom you speak? How would you know? Are you among them?
I just see it as a program that had been embarrassing HC of late and tptb decided to weigh in.

Neither a genius nor a well-heeled alum (wish that it were)....just putting 2 and 2 together.
There are some well-heeled alums who still care, this I do know.....

If there are not "well heeled" alums who give a care, why bother having a football team.

My guess? NP (and Fr B) was getting heavy heat from some well-heeled alums and they pulled the plug....I think after the "apology letter" TG was on a very short leash. I highly doubt NP made this decision independent of alumni input. Maybe he took a good look at the ten threads you started regarding TG?

Someone needs to tell Jen Toland that UConn, BC, Navy and Syracuse are FBS (football bowl subdivision)
In the article, it says we went to the fcs playoffs in 2009 and it also says UConn was the first fcs team we played in 15 years and mentions BC, Syracuse and Navy as fcs. Sloppy errors.

hc87,
By "they" I assume you mean ADNP And Fr B (not the well-heeled alumni).

HC87, if these so-called well-heeled alums actually exist, and are also actually interested in football's fortunes, they will be like the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers who supposedly underwrites most of the compensation of a basketball coach who plays in a dinky pavilion not far from the Allston tolls. Accordingly, we should expect the next head coach at HC to be paid very good money.

hc87, By "they" I assume you mean ADNP And Fr B (not the well-heeled alumni). My hypothesis is that Gilmore was retained (maybe against NP's wishes) last year due to support from monied and/or football alumni but was given a very short leash (hence the apology letter)...when things started going south this year, NP was given the ok by the TPTB/alumni to pull the plug. It really doesn't mattah at this point...but I'd bet dollars to donuts that that is how it went down.

HC played the Fordham game with a non-scollie QB, did it not?

What's the point? "Ummm...td128, how/why was TG fired?" Seriously. It's done. Beat Colgate.

Living in the area I’ve been to a lot of games durable no and before Coach Gilmore. Class guy, ran a clean program. The last few games someth No happened. The team just shut down. Played badly. Etc. His fault, they quit on him. Whatever. He’s the coach so he’s the one who goes. I hope he finds another job. He deserves it.

I disconnected today to spend time with kids without computer/phone and just logged on to the news. While I am not surprised, I feel for Tom. He was a class act and I wish him the best in his future endeavors- except if/when he is coaching against us.
my hope is this lights some fire for the kids and we end up with decent season, maybe even a PL championship. Obviously, that is not likely. The only team that is really good in the league right now is Colgate; so there is slim chance.
My other hope is that the new hire can hit the ground running with recruiting, etc. Hull is the obvious front runner, but there are other possibilities. I don't know enough about Ivy Coordinators out there, but there some Coordinators with HC connections around. It is too bad we cannot wait until the NFL season ends to see if Rogers, Quinn, etc. are available. I think Fipp would not move back down as he'll be a NFL head coach some day. I assume Laf's DC will throw his hat in the ring. He coached at HC for a few years and has been around the Ivy and PL for a long time.

Seems a safe assumption the years of losing gradually earned the displeasure of the powers that be. There may have been particular losses over the last two years that exacerbated this displeasure. There may have been other issues as well. Obviously, our renewed (and well funded) commitment to football is not aimed at simply winning one of the weakest FCS conferences in the country.
The new coach will be expected to win the Patriot regularly; win most of the OOC games v CAA, Ivies, and NEC; and compete with our scheduled FBS opponents. All the while running a respectable program with quality kids. A very tough task. TG was simply not seen (by a critical mass of decision makers) as someone who, for a variety of reasons), could possibly meet those expectations.
Of course it is an open question as to how long a timeline a new coach might have to meet those expectations and a further open question as to whether or not it is even possible for HC to meet those sort of expectations.

He would have needed fr b approval. I think that's fair especially with one year left on his deal. Needs to make sure the economics will work.

Best possible news indeed for the program, as well as, today's and future scholar-athletes. To be kind, my view of Tom's leadership is the antithesis of most on this forum. I remain convinced this decision is at least 5 years too late and thus, translates into a lost decade for HC football (2009-2017 + the time the new head coach needs to establish a new era). I wish the new coach and NP all the luck in world. For Tom, good riddance.

He would have needed fr b approval. And Father B, as you know, would have already bounced the idea off of a few folks. And vice versa. Just the way things work with the highest profile individual (FB Coach) on a college campus. Wouldn't surprise me if all had decided this would be his last year...but then events unraveled and the powers that be decided better now than later.

Their "approval" has probably been implied for some time. On to the next chaptah.

2 things continue to really stand out to me: 1) the decision was made in season; you just don't see that at this level; and 3) the drastic free fall over the last 2-3 weeks. I was at the UNH game, and I just cannot believe that was the same team that took the field yesterday. I consider myself a real casual observer, but even for me it was easy to see the lack of energy and fire in the team on Saturday.
It's really too bad (at least for me) that a guy with such roots as TG had to suffer this fate. But as was pointed out to me many times regarding former coach Brown, its a bottom line business. And if you look at the bottom line now, it's very similar between the 2 coaches: 1 NCAA appearance in 12 years of head coaching, and a sub .500 overall record.
One other thought: regarding judgements being passed about the Luth - don't we need to see another 2-3 years recruiting across the board (and then another 2-3 years of performance) before we can truly judge the impact (and whether or not it was a worthy investment)?

Good points. The free fall you note has to be in the context of expectations that this talented and senior (and redshirt senior) team combined with two purportedly excellent recruiting years would finally turn around our lengthening string of bad seasons. That'll cost a coach his job. A coach already on thin ice might even lose it mid-season. (But I do agree it is unusual for it to happen mid season based solely on W-L).
