I'm curious if Chris Pincince would be interested in the job.

I'm curious if Chris Pincince would be interested in the job. He would have to be. Some splashier names: Scott Shafer - MTSU DC (former Syracuse HC) Mike London - Howard HC *Not endorsing the above, but they seem like realistic targets. Less realistic - Zach Smith OSU WR coach. He is lowest paid assist on Urban's staff, but is regarded as one of the best recruiters in the country. He makes 300K base there.

I'm curious if Chris Pincince would be interested in the job. That's a name that had crossed my mind, as well. Another guy who had a brief stint at HC: Dave Patenaude (current OC at Temple). What about Trinity HC Jeff Devanney?

Highly unlikely that a NFL coordinator would leave the salary and level to take the job. If that was possible, the #1 candidate would have to be David Fipp.

Bring back Duffner. Hell, he's a whole year and a half younger than Carmody.

He was the ST coordinator in Carolina for a couple seasons (or parts thereof) and I did not know he was moved to DB's. Fipp will be a NFL head coach within 5 years.

If Richard Rogers was moved (demoted?) from STC back to position coach then we may actually have a decent shot of convincing him to take the Head job at HC.
I think we'd be very lucky and well off to have him - His links to the NFL (Richard Rogers JR. at Greenbay) wouldn't hurt either.

Forget Bill McG and Rodgers. Zero shot of HC getting a sitting NFL position coach unless the school is willing to throw HUGE bucks and a 6 yr or more deal at the guy, and beyond that I seriously doubt either of these guys would be on NP's short list. I would like to think Lee Hull would be, but who knows.

Get Duff on the phone and pay the man! NFL nothing - get him out of there. He never wanted to leave HC in the first damn place. Give a 3 year guarantee, then a 3 year bonus and extension based on merit. Pony up and have no regrets because if he can’t do it, it probably can’t be done, and at least we can all move on with our lives. I’m repeating what I said before the great Carmody hire - no career assistants, and no D2, certainly no D3 coaches. Forget the Carter parallels; the situation is different now at HC and the college football landscape totally in another galaxy. With all other challenges of being a coach at HC, the job is too hard for someone who is still cutting his teeth on the X’s and O’s. A seasoned front man instills confidence from day 1. We gotta get this right or these guys can get hurt in some of these games we have coming up.

NFL coaches aren't in a position to go interviewing until the season is over. As for college coaches, I believe the protocol is to first ask permission of the employing school, which I believe is rarely given while the season is still ongoing.

HE LEFT HC OVER 25 YEARS AGO. He's currently employed in the NFL..

For what it is worth, I am seeing rumblings on Facebook from some former players from the 80's heyday seeking to spread the word on trying to get McGovern back.

Wow capital letters!
Phreek, are you saying no assistant NFL coach would ever leave the NFL for a collegiate head coaching job? I’m assuming this has happened hundreds of times.
I don’t know what someone like Duffner would think about the option, but one can certainly see a certain poetry in the concept. Now is the time to reach for the stars.
In terms of interviewing, really? Mark Duffner? This is a couple of phone calls and we make him an offer, not an interview.

I love Duff as much as the next guy but he'd definitely need to be interviewed to see how motivated he is, how he'd plan to put a staff together to get some college guys with current recruiting contacts, how he'd attack trying to recruit his first class in very short order, how he thinks college players have changed since the late 80s, etc. Duff had a lot of rules back in the day (no hats in Kimball comes to mind). Not sure how that style would play today. There's no way Pine would or should give him the job without an interview.

92 I know - I was speaking extemporaneously. Point is, it gets done somehow. There’s always time for some phone calls and a plane flight on an off day. With a guy like that, you just figure it out and make it work somehow. Nate flies out to him if need be. Perhaps this is already in the works?

I would have some concerns about whether he'd be the best choice given how long he's been out of the college game and whether he'd want to hit the recruiting trail and deal with athletes who may be more entitled than they were back in the day. He would certainly re-energize the fans and players from that era. It will be interesting. McGovern may be a more likely choice.
