For those who were there, did we play matchup, 1-3-2, both ? I think using 6 defenders would confuse a lot of teams.

Look forward to reading ncaam's report. Seems like his pre-game preview was just about right on the money. Go Cross Go! My finest moment was reading that senior posters now believe CBC did not want to stream in order to hide from future oppo. Some mocked me for that comment earlier. Future is bright. 10 wins this year however.

Your original post is consistent with what we have come to know about CBC. Howe er, Sacred Heart is not that far and they could easily have had one or more scouts there. How smooth was our transition between 2-3 and 3-2? What would those who were at the exhibition see as its most obvious weakness at this point? The best thing I heard last night was that my wife will join me for the FDU And SHU games! I convinced her it would be good to know some of the "new guys" when we see them in Belfast.

The defense was a 3-2 matchup zone, similar to what they played at times last year. It morphs into a 2-3, depending on what’s thrown at hem. AssuC was able to get a lot of open 3 looks - something they will have to work on. PB and CG played very well, both are similar players, will drive and dish, or take it to the hoop. AB looked very good also, not afraid to mix it up inside. Has that football player like mentality with hoop talent. Grandson is an athletic player, but never passes up a shot, just wish he hit more. This team will run when they can, I think I saw more fast breaks last night than I saw all of last year. I think Faw started because he is a better offensive threat than JF. He can shoot out to the 3 pt line. He’s a player! CBC subbed frequently and and you didn’t see much drop off. The passing was crisp and the ball seemed to move around the offense pretty well. Maybe it was the competition, but it seemed the team was quicker and played with urgency last night. I am usually optimistic, and nothing last night made me feel otherwise. I just know the team is young, will face a lot of bumps in the road, especially with the Harvards and Rhodys. We’ll be ok!

Spot on, 81. Agree. Kept thinking to myself, "are we (the freshmen) that good or is it the competition?" Faw, Green and Butler looked great, Grandison very good as well. Frankly better than some of our sophs/juniors. Surprised to see how much Perkins played and just wish he was 100%. Stevens did not play as he is hurt. A lot of time with both PB and CG on the floor at the same time. Both can thread the needle on passes and I like that they both seem to be able to finish inside, something we haven't always gotten from our PGs but at 5'10" and 5' 11" they are "big" by HC standards. The team looks demonstrably faster. The only minor disappointment was shooting 29% from beyond the arc.
Cautiously optimistic.

By my count we only had 2 maybe 3 times where we had to throw something up as the shot clock was about to go off, big improvement from last year when it was so frustrating to watch those last second heaves.
Overall team speed appears quicker/faster.
The Frosh appear to have good basketball IQ and skills. Why? For the brief time they have been together, they knew what they were doing out there! The offense flowed and they created good looks for their shots. When AB came into the game (we were all expecting a barrage of 3 pointers from way being the arc - after all we heard and read) I was a little concerned because he appeared a little hesitant, thinking more than just playing! But that went away with more playing time.
I know it is only 1 game, 1 time seeing this team, but to me it looks like they are adapting very well, have good BB IQ/skills and are doing things that come naturally rather than just thinking and then reacting.
It will be a lot of fun watching them grow!!!

Believe Butler was 6 of 8 shooting (don't have the stats in front of me now) and was 0 of 1 from 3, making him 6 of 7 from 2 point range. Many lay-ups. He has as others noted, a football player body. I expected purple reign from 3 but that might be for another day.
On defense, I thought the frosh looked pretty good for a first game and better than at least some of the upperclassman. I suspect that why we got the "OK" evaluation from CWC.

Perhaps Butler's high school stats (~31% from 3) are more accurate than the Crossports Highlight Tape Breakdown, but those numbers, along with being a high school QB and the description of his game from last night all remind me of RJ Evans. Another RJ Evans would be a huge addition to the program after the recruiting from the last couple years.

Another Charles (who can shoot the FTs that gave RJ such trouble) might be even better.

Zignorski did what he was supposed to do and was fine for the 8th man. The best thing I saw out of him was that he didn't spend his time looking at the bench expecting to get yanked. As pointed out in the coaches' night thread, Coach Carmody said the pressure/confidence thing of last year has been taken care of. Last night Zignorski did not have the look he had last year of always worried about screwing up. Someone did an analysis about how often people shoot, and he is still a reluctant shooter. He took one shot last night that might have been off a set inbounds play. (He missed an open lay-up(his clear low point of the night) - Floyd tipped it in). Another time on a 2 one 1, he made the extra pass to Benzan for the lay-up, but would have had a great look himself. Could be a selfless play - could be an example of reluctance to shoot. Best O play was getting a rebound down low then immediately spotting and hitting a streaking Benzan for an easy lay-up. On D no notable great plays, no notable screw-ups. Was active and doing what he was supposed to. A few assists, a few rebounds, no fouls or turnovers or defensive lapses in 8th man minutes On an unrelated note, Charles and Grandison took more 3's between them than the rest of the team combined. Faw had a nice 3 from the top of the key. Nice form and looked natural in flow taking it. Having a big guy comfortable with the 3 is an asset for this offense.

The occasional 3 from Matt Husek was often at a key point and drove his defender nuts more than once! A good 3 pt shot could make Faw just as difficult a match-up.

Often hits the underside of the rim.

RJ's Frosh Stats: 13.4 PPG 5.2 RPG 1.7 SPG PL Rookie of the Year Team 18-14, 2nd in PL, Loss in PL Championship If Butler can exceed or match that resume this year, that would be tremendous news.

Butler may be as efficient as RJ, but may not get RJ's minutes and thus his averages may be less
