Will we see any moronic sacrifices tonight? 1. Roberts' decision to sac in that earlier situation was questionable, but he is certainly not bunt-happy. In fact, only the Phils had fewer sac bunts in the NL this year. 2. Ironically, it was almost de rigeur that Taylor bunt in the 6th with runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out - instead he doubled home both runners. Much more questionable managerial decision, but a fabulous outcome. 3. Most questionable of all . . .Top of the 5th, runners on 2nd and 3rd, nobody out - and with one out, Verlander doesn't even try to bunt. Astros fail to score, maybe the turning point of the game. Verlander' career BA is .093, and he actually has more career sac bunts (10) than hits (4). Safety squeeze isn't worth trying? Not if you're used to managing in the AL, I guess. I'll admit to being prejudiced when it comes to Dave Roberts, but even an objective observer would have to admit bringing in Morrow to squelch the 'stros in that fateful 5th was masterful.

So both starters are out before 3 full innings McCullers out after 2 1/3 having given up 0 runs. Hinch overmanaging.

Houston 5 pitchers in 5.0 innings, still lead 5-0.

At the time though, it was pretty clear what he wanted to do. He had no desire for McCullers to go more than three innings. Essentially, he broke the game down into three three inning games from a pitching perspective (McCullers, Peacock, Morton).

Essentially, he broke the game down into three three inning games from a pitching perspective (McCullers, Peacock, Morton). The bigger issue was that McCullers was getting lucky. His control was awful (4 HBPs made for 7 baserunners in 2.1 innings) and the Dodgers were making great contact on balls that were being hit right at fielders (e.g. Taylor's LDP to end the second inning). McCullers was certainly generating lots of swings and misses, but you can't keep putting guys on base and hoping the for the best against a potent lineup when you've got a 5-run lead to protect. I thought it was the right call at the time given the availability of guys in the bullpen.

Exactly A new manager who has to be an improvement, now a new pitching coach. I was there when we won it in ‘69. Gotta believe( RIP, Tug)

Ron Swoboda's diving, horizontal-to-the-ground catch of a line drive is still, to this day, the greatest baseball play I have ever witnessed.

A good one, indeed. But, I am old enough to remember seeing Willie Mays catch racing toward deep center in the Polo Grounds and pulling the ball in as it went over his shoulder. Not bad!

Vic Wertz at bat I think..,,, THAT is impressive memory. Interested folks can see a film of "the catch" by going to YouTube and "Willie Mays the catch" (the video from game 1 of the 1954 World Series is 30 seconds long).

Vic Wertz at bat I think..,,, The old Polo Grounds had a real deep centerfield. The ball was supposedly hit well over 400 feet. Legend has it the Giants pitcher who came into face Wertz and was immediately yanked walked into the dugout and said "I got my man"
