Agreed on new thread and a warm welcome to Coach Chesney. I have a good friend who is in a position to have observed Chesney as a coach, leader and man. That friend has a very high opinion of Chesney and what he will be able to do at HC. That opinion combined with what we have heard here from coach and others makes me very bullish on Chesney’s ability to turn this thing around

I would expect, if for no other reason than a courtesy, that Nate would put out a quick email blast to CAF/PC members that an announcement is forthcoming similar to his pre-notice about TG's termination before it was confirmed publicly.
Considering that marketing and fund-raising are his forte, to do otherwise would be a major faux pas. I would also expect that there would be a press conference announcement with the new head coach there in person rather than just an electronic message.
So far, no "pre-announcement" made.

1:00 pm--Breaking News on the Telegram web site www.telegram.com/Holy Cross conducted a national search for its new football coach, but it turns out the college didn’t have to look outside Worcester to find him. According to multiple sources at both schools, Bob Chesney, who guided Assumption to unprecedented success in his five seasons with the Greyhounds, will be the 28th head football coach in Holy Cross history. Holy Cross is expected to announce the hiring Thursday afternoon. Chesney, a 2000 graduate of Dickinson College in his home state of Pennsylvania, replaces Tom Gilmore, who was fired Oct. 15. HC offensive coordinator Brian Rock served as interim head coach for the final four games of the 2017 season. The Crusaders went 2-2 in those games and finished 4-7. Chesney’s Assumption teams went 44-16, which was easily the most successful five-year stretch in program history. Under Chesney, the Greyhounds ascended to one of the top teams in the East Region and garnered national recognition as well. This fall, Assumption won its second Northeast-10 Conference title in the last three years and made its third straight NCAA Division 2 playoff appearance. The Greyhounds advanced to the national quarterfinals. AC was ranked as high as No. 8 in this year’s AFCA national poll and produced the NE-10 MVP (junior receiver/return specialist Deonte Harris), Defensive Player of the Year (senior safety Andrew Benson), Special Teams Player of Year (senior kicker Cole Tracy) and Defensive Lineman of the Year (senior Ray Sarkodieh of Worcester). Harris and Tracy were AFCA All-Americans. Holy Cross has posted just one winning season (6-5 in 2015) in the last six years. Chesney has proven he can turn a program around. Assumption went 3-7 the year before his arrival and finished above .500 just two times in the previous 16 seasons. Chesney has never coached at the Division 1 level, but he had a great run at his other head coaching job, going 23-9 in three seasons at Division 3 Salve Regina. In his eight seasons as a head coach, Chesney’s teams have never finished below .500. Chesney interviewed Monday on the Holy Cross campus. Last week, Lee Hull and Terry Malone, both HC alums, and Harvard offensive coordinator Joel Lamb, also interviewed for the position. |

Strange way to learn about a new coach. No announcement from HC? I’m confident Chesney’s the man if the T and G released it, but I also would not be shocked if . . .

Excited to see what Chesney can do at HC!
We were very fortunate to be able to back into him after this process, bailing us out from hiring the guys who were brought in last week who would not have moved the needle like a fresh, rising star (fingers crossed) has the potential to do.

Holy Cross Names Bob Chesney Head Football Coach
WORCESTER, Mass. – The College of the Holy Cross has named Bob Chesney its new head football coach, as announced by Director of Athletics Nathan Pine. Chesney, who becomes the 28th head coach in the history of the program, has posted a winning record in each of his eight seasons as a collegiate head coach. He will begin his responsibilities at Holy Cross immediately.
Chesney will be introduced publicly at a press conference on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at the Luth Athletic Complex on the Holy Cross campus. The press conference will be shown live online through the Patriot League Network and GoHolyCross.com.
“I am thrilled to introduce Bob Chesney as our next head football coach and to welcome him to the Holy Cross family,” said Pine. “Bob is a rising star in the coaching profession, and his track record of head coaching success at multiple programs speaks for itself. He is a familiar face within the Worcester community already, and we know he will be a great fit for our culture and vision at Holy Cross.”
A two-time Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year, Chesney’s career record stands at 67-25 (.728 winning percentage), including five seasons at Assumption College (44-16, 2013-2017) and three years at Salve Regina University (23-9, 2010-2012). He took over an Assumption program that had posted only two winning seasons in the 17 years prior to his arrival and led the Greyhounds to five-straight winning records and three-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Chesney previously rebuilt a Salve Regina program which had a streak of eight-consecutive losing seasons before his tenure, posting three winning campaigns in a row. During his eight seasons at the helm of the two programs, Chesney coached 94 all-conference selections and 12 All-Americans.
“I would like to thank everyone at Assumption College for their belief and support in our program over the past five years. The players, coaches, administrators, families and local community have helped to build an extremely successful program that will endure for years to come,” said Chesney. “When presented with this opportunity at Holy Cross, I quickly realized how passionate those connected to the College truly are. The commitment to athletics and the vision for future success is evident, and I am proud to be part of it.
“My family and I are excited to begin this new chapter, and I would like to thank Nathan Pine, Brendan Sullivan and the search committee at Holy Cross for their support,” he continued. “With the commitment from our passionate alumni and the great Worcester community, we look forward to bringing Holy Cross football back to a position of prominence on the national stage.”
During the 2017 campaign, Chesney earned Northeast-10 Coach of the Year honors after leading Assumption to an overall record of 11-2, the Northeast-10 Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals. The Greyhounds saw a school-record 17 players named to the All-Northeast-10 Conference teams, including four major conference award winners and three All-Americans. Assumption led the nation in turnover margin, punt returns, interceptions and turnovers forced, while standing fifth in sacks and sixth in scoring offense.
In 2016, Chesney’s Assumption team went 9-3 overall, played in the Northeast-10 Championship Game and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Greyhounds saw 13 all-conference selections and ranked second nationally in passing efficiency defense, fourth in passing defense and 11th in total defense while leading the league in scoring offense.
Chesney’s 2015 team went 11-2 overall, won the program’s first-ever Northeast-10 title and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round. The Greyhounds had 13 all-conference selections and two All-Americans, while leading the league in scoring offense and red zone offense. At the conclusion of the season, Chesney was named the Northeast-10 Coach of the Year, the New England Football Writers Coach of the Year, the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston New England Coach of the Year and the Hero Sports Division II National Coach of the Year.
In 2014, Chesney guided the Greyhounds to a 7-4 record, placing 10 players on the All-Northeast-10 teams, including one All-American. Chesney’s team led the Northeast-10 in rushing offense, sacks and red zone offense. In his first season as Assumption’s head coach in 2013, Chesney’s team went 6-5 and saw three players earn All-America honors and 11 receive all-conference recognition.
Chesney came to Assumption from Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I., where he posted a 23-9 record as the head coach from 2010-2012. He coached 30 all-conference selections, three All-Americans, 41 academic all-conference selections and one Academic All-American, while his defense consistently ranked among the league and national leaders in Division III. The Seahawks led the New England Football Conference in scoring defense in 2010 and 2011 and ranked second in 2012 while never allowing more than 14.6 points per game. Chesney’s team also led the nation in third-down conversion defense in 2012 and red zone defense in 2010.
Prior to his arrival at Salve Regina, Chesney was a member of the staff at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., from 2005-2009, serving as a defensive assistant and special teams coach for four seasons before being promoted to associate head coach in 2009. During his time at Johns Hopkins University, 21 players received all-conference recognition, including one All-America selection.
Chesney previously served as an assistant coach and special teams coordinator at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., from 2003-2004. He was also the defensive coordinator at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pa., in 2002, and served as an assistant coach at Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., from 2000-2001.
Chesney earned his bachelor’s degree from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., in 2000. He was a four-year varsity letterwinner as a defensive back at Dickinson, earning Second Team All-Centennial Conference honors in both 1998 and 1999. He was also the 1997 recipient of the team’s Vincent Correal MVP Award and served as a team captain during his senior year.
Chesney currently resides in Worcester with his wife, Andrea, their two daughters, Lyla and Hudson, and their son, Robert

Based on what I heard about Coach Chesney and his record as a head coach I am very happy to hear that he is our new leader. I'm going to send in another contribution to the Crusader Athletic Fund now to help with his budget.
